The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches is a 1903 work of American literature by W. E. B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of sociology and a cornerstone of African-American literature.

The book contains several essays on race, some of which had been published earlier in The Atlantic Monthly. To develop this work, Du Bois drew from his own experiences as an African American in American society. Outside of its notable relevance in African-American history, The Souls of Black Folk also holds an important place in social science as one of the early works in the field of sociology.

In The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois used the term "double consciousness", perhaps taken from Ralph Waldo Emerson ("The Transcendentalist" and "Fate"), applying it to the idea that black people must have two fields of vision at all times. They must be conscious of how they view themselves, as well as being conscious of how the world views them.

The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind (French: Psychologie des Foules; literally: Psychology of Crowds) is a book authored by Gustave Le Bon that was first published in 1895.

In the book, Le Bon claims that there are several characteristics of crowd psychology: "impulsiveness, irritability, incapacity to reason, the absence of judgement of the critical spirit, the exaggeration of sentiments, and others. Le Bon claimed that "an individual immersed for some length of time in a crowd soon finds himself - either in consequence of magnetic influence given out by the crowd or from some other cause of which we are ignorant - in a special state, which much resembles the state of fascination in which the hypnotized individual finds himself in the hands of the hypnotizer.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. This book examines how ideological factionalism, cultural conflicts, and competing visions of justice have shaped America’s perception of multiculturalism. The author believes that the flash points disrupting America stem from feeling that one’s group is being disrespected, whether by threatening it with violence, or, more subtly, by a cold, exclusionary pattern. Building on the author's concept of religious humanism, the book offers a systematic explanation of the roots of factionalism and offers new pathways for embracing multiculturalism. In the process, the author critiques mainstream models of utility theory and identity politics, proposing a revised framework that headlines the search for meaning as the dominant soulful force shaping behavior. &nbsp;In later chapters, the focus shifts towards making multiculturalism work. Proposed reforms are grounded in civic purpose, offering economists, policymakers, and the public practical tools necessary to promote constructive dialogue and institutional inclusion. Successful multicultural policies should aim at promoting national unity by honoring hyphenated-American cultural identities.&nbsp;Victor Glass 
 is Professor of Professional Practice and Director of the Center for Research in Regulated Industries (CRRI) in the Department of Finance and Economics at Rutgers University Business School, Newark, New Jersey, USA. He holds a PhD in Economics and an MBA from Columbia University. He has published articles and books on net neutrality, business data services, customers as competitors, the next generation of wireless technology, smart grid technologies, and antitrust policies, among others.

Reframing Multiculturalism in the United States

The Book of Tea ¿A Japanese Harmony of Art, Culture, and the Simple Life (1906) by Okakura Kakuz¿ (1906) is a long essay linking the role of chad¿ (teaism) to the aesthetic and cultural aspects of Japanese life and protesting Western caricatures of "the East".

Addressed to a Western audience, it was originally written in English and is one of the great English tea classics. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind. In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things, the most important of which were simplicity and humility:

It (Teaism) insulates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.

This, Okakura believed, was an aesthetic that should inform everything from the arts and architecture to daily life and was already informing them in Japan.
