Jede Pflanze wird wissenschaftlich exakt und maßstabsgetreu mit ihren jeweils charakteristischen Details dargestellt. Pfeile markieren wichtige Unterscheidungsmerkmale zwischen ähnlichen Arten. Vegetative Merkmale, die im Textband nicht beschrieben sind, erleichtern die Bestimmung im blütenlosen Zustand. Die detaillierten Wuchsformdarstellungen illustrieren die Möglichkeiten der vegetativen Vermehrung und Ausbreitung. Angaben zu Größe, Lebensform, Blütezeit und Naturschutz ergänzen die Abbildungen.
 Für die 14. Auflage wurden 170 neue Pflanzenzeichnungen angefertigt, darunter 130 für gänzlich neu aufgenommene Arten. Bei über 30 weiteren Zeichnungen wurden wichtige Details ergänzt oder korrigiert. Der Erstautor nimmt seine Leser mit auf seine ganz persönliche Reise hin zur Antwort auf die vielleicht größte Frage der Biologie. Ulrich C. Schreiber (i.R.) war Professor für Geologie an der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Die thematischen Schwerpunkte der klassischen Geologie mit Vulkanologie, Tektonik und Regionaler Geologie verknüpfte er frühzeitig mit ökologischen Fragestellungen bis hin zur tiefen Biosphäre.
Christian Mayer ist zwar rechnerisch im Ruhestand, aber im Rahmen einer Vertragsverlängerung weiterhin als Universitätsprofessor für Physikalische Chemie an der Universität Duisburg-Essen tätig. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind unter anderem selbstorganisierende molekulare Prozesse und die präbiotische Chemie.
Die Forschungsergebnisse beider Autoren wurden vielfach international publiziert und in zahlreichen Wissenschaftssendungen aufgegriffen.
