Rationality. What It Is, Why It Seems Scarce, Why It Matters

50 Shades of Grey

Everyone eats, but rarely do we investigate why we eat what we eat. Why do we love spices, sweets, coffee? How did rice become such a staple food throughout so much of eastern Asia? Everyone Eats examines the social and cultural reasons for our food choices and provides an explanation of the nutritional reasons for why humans eat what they do, resulting in a unique cultural and biological approach to the topic. E. N. Anderson explains the economics of food in the globalization era, food's relationship to religion, medicine, and ethnicity, and offers suggestions on how to end hunger, starvation, and malnutrition. Anderson also brings insight into the historical and scientific underpinnings of our food customs. This thoroughly updated third edition incorporates the latest food scholarship, including breakthrough findings that have been made in archaeology and nutrition, the new science of food production, and the effects of climate change and pandemics on food supply chains. A perennial classic in the anthropology of food, Everyone Eats feeds our need to understand human ecology by explaining the ways that cultures and political systems structure the edible environment.

“In
Principles of Imperfect Organized Crime Prevention
, John Braithwaite offers the first global analysis of organized crime and its entanglements with state corruption, war crimes, and corporate crime, drawing on evidence from more than 50 countries. Through a distinctive empirical and normative lens, Braithwaite combines fine-grained analyses and illuminating insights with thought-provoking recommendations grounded in restorative justice, responsive regulation and a theory of assemblages. Essential reading for scholars of organized crime, this book is equally valuable for social scientists, policymakers, and practitioners seeking innovative strategies to loosen organized crime’s grip on societies and mitigate resulting harms.”
–Leticia Paoli
, Professor, Institute of Criminology, KU Leuven, Belgium
This open access book is a novel contribution to criminology, a radical conjuncture in the evolution of restorative justice and responsive regulatory theory. When Brazil’s President Lula returned to power, he backed an assemblage of movements that included environmentalists, Indigenous leaders who were river keepers, forest keepers, and regulators to reduce deforestation of the Amazon at the hands of assemblages of illegal loggers, wildlife smugglers, agro-business, and corrupt officials. This steeply slowed accelerating destruction of the Amazon ecosystem. Simple reforms like resourcing forest fire brigades and environmental crime prosecutors also helped. Braithwaite’s theoretical point is that disassembling harm-producing assemblages, and replacing them with harm-preventing assemblages, helps us see how big changes to the character of organized crime do occur to impact things that matter, like the Amazon.Organized crime does most harm when it criminalizes states or is taken over by presidents of states. Braithwaite diagnoses data from 6000 interviews and documentary sources from over 50 countries to discern the states where this is happening. Which are the societies where the power of organized crime to do this level of harm has been disassembled?John Braithwaite
is Emeritus Professor and Founder of the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the Australian National University.

Principles of Imperfect Organized Crime Prevention

Palgrave Studies in Race, Ethnicity, Indigeneity and Criminal Justice

The edited collection gathers contributions from across the world and engages in constructive debate about fundamental issues regarding Indigenous peoples in connection with issues of crime and harm. It provides the most diverse and global coverage of this topic across five continents. Existing explorations of Indigenous peoples in relation to issues of crime and harm have proven valuable in challenging, decentring, and renewing criminology. Yet, this research area remains at the margins of criminology, and many fundamental questions—such as the meaning of ‘being Indigenous’—await deeper exploration. Key themes explored by the book include: the meaning of Indigeneity; Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous cosmologies, and their implications for the study of crime; the meaning of ‘crime’ for Indigenous peoples; causes, consequences, and types of crimes and harms against Indigenous Peoples; Indigenous peoples and gender; Indigenous systems of justice; and Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and state criminal justice systems. This collection does not seek consensus but reflects diversity and depth. It offers an introduction to Indigenous criminology and fundamental concepts, as well as a series of case studies and more intricate theorisation.David R. Goyes
is a researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, with a PhD in criminology. He has contributed extensively to the study of North-South global relations, environmental conflicts, and Indigenous issues. Goyes is editor-in-chief of the
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
and a member of several editorial boards.
Angie Cuchimba
is a researcher at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, Colombia. Cuchimba holds a law degree from the same university. She is an Indigenous leader in the Nasa Community and has represented her People worldwide in diverse meetings. Together with Goyes, Cuchimba has published articles about Indigenous rights and justice in some of the best journals in the world.

An energetic generation of spiritual leaders is reviving religion in the United States. They are creating enterprising grassroots organizations that have brought forth new expressions of belief and belonging for people who continue to long for deeper engagement in spiritual life and practice. For the first time in the United States, most Americans do not belong to a church. And yet, while churches are emptier, new spiritual leadership is hard at work building inventive centers of belonging rooted in the search for meaning, values, and guidance for this time of technological change and social fracture. Some of these spiritual entrepreneurs and builders are clergy. Many more are laypeople who have heard a call to higher purpose out of the pain of peers and distinct from denomination. America's spiritual revival now emerges, and through the portraits of those shaping this awakening we witness new and innovative ways they fulfill people through belief, feelings of belonging, and activation.Spiritual Belonging: 40 Faith Leaders Reimagine Community, Connection, and Belief spotlights these exciting new leaders and the communities they are creating, shining light on innovative paths forward for those yearning for more connection and meaning in their lives.Highlighted leaders include Alejandro Aguilera-Titus, Imam Abdullah Antelpli, Rabbi Elan Babchuck, Rev Jennifer Bailey, Helen A. India Studies in Business and Economics

This book provides a comprehensive perspective by taking an interdisciplinary approach to issues of attaining SDGs in India. It starts with policy priorities and opportunities for interlinking of different SDGs with sustainable industrial transformation. Subsequently, various chapters present a blend of analytical methods that are primarily rooted in economics and yet have an inter-disciplinary approach, highlighting pathways towards achieving SDGs, especially SDG1, SDG2, SDG3, SDG4, SDG10, SDG11, SDG13, and SDG15. Gender equality and empowerment of women is a common cross-cutting issue across all three themes towards achieving SDG targets. Chapters are divided into three themes climate change, health and nutrition, and poverty and inequality, with a special chapter devoted to each theme providing the overall picture. The book’s content is a great resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners studying these SDGs related to India as the country moves forward on its growth path.
