This book offers a pioneering and deeply insightful examination of one of the most challenging dilemmas in contemporary counterterrorism and international law: how to legally and morally assess the responsibility of female suicide bombers affiliated with terrorist groups such as Boko Haram. It exposes a critical legal blind spot where female bombers are caught in a 'grey zone' - neither fully prosecuted nor released - due to conflicting norms around gender, victimhood and terrorism. Drawing on extensive research including interviews, case studies of failed suicide bombers, and legal analysis of terrorism cases, it develops a novel culpability framework that moves beyond simplistic notions of guilt or innocence. By exploring the complex spectrum of moral and legal responsibility, this framework offers a much-needed tool for policymakers, judges, practitioners, academics and students dealing with terrorism, war crimes and transitional justice. Responsibility Accountability Maritime Law examines the phenomenon of criminalisation which confronts the Master in their professional conduct, both in terms of Flag State and Port State rights and obligations. The fault lines of criminalisation, which go to the heart of the question, demand an understanding of how the concept of criminal justice has evolved to impose accountability on the Master, in circumstances which had not been crimes before.Since this book was first published, the maritime world has changed dramatically, requiring a new understanding of responsibility and accountability before the Master can make rational decisions to respond to the risk of criminalisation. While the basic theory of accountability for criminalisation and the sources of law provide the foundation, this second edition presents a new introduction to summarise the necessity for changes in structure in order to define the pre-existing law with which the Master must comply, acknowledging the re-emergence of risk in the Gulf in 2026, and the foreseeable emergence of risk in the Arctic as geopolitical pressures create uncertainty as to who will assert jurisdictional control in the management of merchant shipping in this region. The Sources of Law chapter has been expanded to address risk management in the context of current geopolitical turmoil, balancing company commitments with the safety of the ship and crew. New content includes detention of Masters and crew, the International Convention on Arrest of Ships, universal jurisdiction, and relevant case studies such as the M/T Heroic Idun.The book's format meets the needs of lawyers, academics and maritime professionals, with the aim of analysing the character of criminalisation to determine the features which characterise the phenomenon in Port and Flag State contexts; it interrogates the aim to define the nature of criminalisation and identifies the constituent problems in such criminal accountability. This book demonstrates how legal knowledge is a vital, empowering tool in human rights education. Despite the centrality of international human rights law to the global rights framework, its role in human rights education (HRE) - particularly in schools and community settings - has been sidelined, dismissed as either too technical or too politically problematic. This book challenges that marginalisation head-on. It examines how legal knowledge is framed, valued, or rejected in the theory and practice of HRE, engaging critically with the prevailing trends in the field: one that gestures toward law but avoids depth, and another that disavows law entirely in favour of culturally embedded alternatives. Through a close reading of scholarship and policy, combined with insights from educational theory and socio-legal studies, the book argues for law's role as a form of "powerful knowledge" in HRE. It contends that access to and understanding of legal norms and mechanisms are not only essential for meaningful rights education but are themselves enabling rights in practice. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of human rights, legal pedagogy, and education policy, as well as practitioners developing HRE programs. It offers a timely, nuanced intervention into a field grappling with deep epistemological and political tensions, and reasserts the value of law in the struggle for rights.

This book examines the United Nations Security Council's authorisation of the use of force, considering the extensive body of UN Security Council resolutions across its now eighty years of existence. As one of the established exceptions to the Article 2(4) UN Charter prohibition on the use of force, UN Security Council authorisation of force remains a key focus for both States and scholars alike. Despite the apparent consequences of authorisation, authorising resolutions lack prescribed formats or mandatory content. The UN Security Council has over time, however, developed a consistent practice of prior explicit authorisation. The development of this practice is reflected in a number of essential characteristics within authorising resolutions of the UN Security Council. These include explicit determinations of a threat to international peace and security, the invocation of Chapter VII (or VIII) of the UN Charter, the use of specific authorising language, the inclusion of time or functional limits on authorisation, and the imposition of reporting obligations on those authorised to use force. The book ultimately argues that prior explicit authorisation constitutes a well-established practice, rejecting the legality and admissibility of implicit and retroactive authorisation.

This open access book brings together leading European labour law scholars to explore how workers' representatives' rights are evolving in the context of the digital transformation of work. Rooted in EU and national legal frameworks, the book examines how information and consultation (I&amp;C) rights must adapt to the challenges posed by platform work, algorithmic management, cross-border telework, and digitalisation more broadly. Structured around 4 key themes-Who is entitled to I&amp;C rights; Where these rights apply in transnational and virtual workplaces; How they are exercised in the context of AI, occupational safety, and industrial democracy; and What new rights are emerging in response to digital risks-the book offers a comprehensive and comparative analysis of labour law in the digital age. It pays particular attention to the role of workers' representatives in shaping and implementing emerging rights such as the right to disconnect. Drawing on the findings of the DIGILARE research project (EU grant 101126503), the volume provides actionable legal and policy insights for EU institutions, national lawmakers, social partners, and practitioners. This book offers a foundational rethinking of how international law engages with non-state effective territorial entities - territories that, while legally part of a recognised state, are de facto governed by non-state actors or other states. These entities - ranging from ISIL-controlled areas in Syria to the contested territory of Crimea, the autonomous Somaliland, and Taiwan - occupy an increasingly prominent place in global politics, yet remain inadequately addressed in legal doctrine. Rather than assessing these territories through the binary lens of statehood, the book begins by assuming their non-state status and asks: what legal capacity and responsibilities do such entities hold under international law? It considers their obligations toward both other states and the populations under their control, and explores the broader implications for concepts like sovereignty, territorial integrity, and recognition. Drawing on four case studies across a spectrum of state-likeness, the book moves beyond isolated analyses of conflict or self-determination to offer a more holistic account of what these entities reveal about the limits and possibilities of the current international legal framework. It argues for a more functional, capacity-based understanding of legal responsibility that acknowledges the realities of territorial control without forgoing the notion and role of statehood.
