Hayek's Bastards shows that many contemporary iterations of the Far Right, from Javier Milei to Donald Trump, emerged not in opposition to neoliberalism, but within it. Yet it consistently fails to place value on vital aspects of the nonhuman world, whether carbon emissions or entire ecosystems. In Free Gifts, Alyssa Battistoni explores capitalism’s persistent failure to value nature, arguing that the key question is not the moral issue of why some kinds of nature shouldn’t be commodified, but the economic puzzle of why they haven’t been. To understand contemporary ecological problems from biodiversity collapse to climate change, she contends, we have to understand how some things come to have value under capitalism—and how others do not. To help us do so, Battistoni recovers and reinterprets the idea of the free gift of nature used by classical economic thinkers to describe what we gratuitously obtain from the natural world, and builds on Karl Marx’s critique of political economy to show how capitalism fundamentally treats nature as free for the taking. This novel theory of capitalism’s relationship to nature not only helps us understand contemporary ecological breakdown, but also casts capitalism’s own core dynamics in a new light. Battistoni addresses four different instances of the free gift in political economic thought, each in a specific domain: natural agents in industry, pollution in the environment, reproductive labor in the household, and natural capital in the biosphere. In so doing, she offers new readings of major twentieth-century thinkers, including Friedrich Hayek, Simone de Beauvoir, Garrett Hardin, Silvia Federici, and Ronald Coase. Ultimately, she offers a novel account of freedom for our ecologically troubled present, developing a materialist existentialism to argue that capitalism limits our ability to be responsible for our relationships to the natural world, and imagining how we might live freely while valuing nature’s gifts.

Since 2015, China has actively promoted “third-party market cooperation” as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a “triple-win” arrangement that combines China’s manufacturing capacity, partner countries’ advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.
Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of “semi-internalisation.” The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China’s significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

This book attempts to answer the most fundamental questions of BRI by applying economic methods: What is, what to do, and how to do. Whether in China or the international community, whether in academia or in decision-making circles, there is no consensus on these issues, even though BRI has been around for eight years. As a result, there are many misunderstandings and suspicions about BRI, which have become a major obstacle to its smooth development. As an academic study, this book is not a simple interpretation of the official Chinese BRI representation, but an analysis of it is based on a unified theoretical framework. In addition to tracing the evolution of BRI and the cognition of the international community, the focus of this book is to analyze the attributes, positioning, and governance structure of BRI, as well as to discuss the internal and external risks it faces and its future development direction. The author starts from the development orientation of BRI (different from the current rule orientation of global governance) and makes a normative definition of it. Emphasizing development orientation does not mean that BRI does not need rules, but to jointly formulate rules according to the needs of development. Therefore, one of the directions to promote the high-quality development of BRI is institutionalization.

This open access book presents a new approach to growth amid international efforts toward sustainable development Quality growth considers inclusiveness, resilience to external shocks (natural disasters, infectious diseases, financial crises etc.) and sustainability in terms of climate and environmental change as integral parts of growth, thereby maximizing people’s wellbeing. This approach aims to complement and advance the SDGs before moving beyond them to address broader challenges. This book seeks to elucidate the concept of quality growth from the perspective of economic theory and is primarily intended as an academic resource for practitioners, researchers and students interested in development. The conceptual approach part of the book covered in Chapters 1 to 9 provides a comprehensive review of theoretical background that underpin this approach and a proposal on how quality growth could be measured. The country case study part of the book, Chapters 10 to 14, considers how growth, inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience have evolved in practice, with an in-depth analysis of case studies from five countries. This book is to discuss the interrelationships among growth, inclusiveness, sustainability, and resilience in an integrated manner, a feature rarely found in other works. The proposed measures for quality growth also add value to the international debates over indicators that extend “beyond GDP.”

When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe. Research foci of the Centre are at the moment aesthetics, discourses of history, cultures of learning and erudition, university history and not least the wide field of early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age. The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres' research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources).
