A unified framework for understanding monetary policy, including recent unprecedented interventions by central banks Over the past two decades, monetary policy has been deployed in unprecedented ways, as central banks attempted to mitigate the adverse consequences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 global lockdown, and recent inflationary surges. In Monetary Economics and Policy, Pierpaolo Benigno offers a new way to understand the potency and effectiveness of monetary policy, presenting a unified modeling framework to analyze policy challenges posed by both paper and digital currency systems. He investigates current theoretical and policy controversies, drawing connections with historical themes in monetary economics. Benigno examines how central banks control the value of their currency amid competition from cryptocurrencies and private money-like securities; discusses the desirability of inflation targeting for macroeconomic stabilization; and explores theoretical grounds for the unconventional monetary policies seen in the recent period of zero nominal interest rates, including forward guidance, quantitative and credit easing, and helicopter money. He accompanies his analysis with an innovative visual representation of the New Keynesian model and inflation-targeting policies. Benigno's novel framework also allows the study of monetary policy normalization through quantitative tightening toward what has become the "new normal." He discusses the optimal provision of liquidity and the different roles of the government and financial intermediaries. Finally, he recounts historical controversies regarding the inflation-unemployment trade-off to understand the 2020s inflationary surge and delves into the causes and dynamics of hyperinflations, tracing them to the subtle, ambiguous linkages between monetary and fiscal policy and weak balance-sheet conditions for the central bank.

'Michael Auerbach has one of the most original minds I've ever encountered . . . This is a dazzling and entertaining book . . . But it is also an urgent warning' PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE, author of Empire of Pain A brilliant exploration of the phenomenon of prediction markets that asks: what happens when democracy becomes another commodity? Prediction markets are sweeping the world, fundamentally changing the nature of gambling - and the very ways in which we attempt to divine the future. Posed as binary 'Yes/No' questions about future events, prediction markets allow any difference of opinion - whether on pop culture or politics, wars or assassinations - to be financialised. A regulatory minefield with moral implications that divide nations, governments and bettors, they have proved as effective at accurately predicting the timing of missile strikes as they have at calling the outcomes of elections. But are these markets really a new phenomenon? And what does it mean when those tasked with safeguarding democracy hold financial stakes in its volatility? From Renaissance Rome, where merchants wagered on papal conclaves, through nineteenth-century London's wartime coffee house gossip, to the Pentagon's ill-fated terrorism futures exchange and blockchain-based betting on Polymarket today, The Big Bet tells the gripping five-hundred-year story of a permissive regime that no one designed and no one voted for.Drawing on deep expertise, Michael Auerbach examines how these markets are changing our world, and what they mean for the future where democracy becomes just another commodity to be priced and traded. Because prediction markets are not an anomaly - they are the logical endpoint of a society that has applied market capitalism to every aspect of life. And in a world where everything is a wager and nothing is off limits, knowing where the chips will fall matters more than ever.

Prediction Markets and the Future of Democracy

The Big Bet

Helvetica 2049

In less than two decades, a nine-page paper posted to a cryptography mailing list
spawned a trillion-dollar ecosystem, mass retail speculation, billion-dollar collapses,
criminal empires, revolutionary financial primitives, and a global regulatory reckoning.

Along the way, anonymous founders disappeared. Billion-dollar protocols died in hours.
CEOs tweeted "funds are safe" while the money was already gone. And millions of ordinary
people - developers, traders, believers, gamblers - watched their screens as fortunes
were made and destroyed in real time.

This is not a book about whether crypto is good or bad.

This is a history - told through the people who built it, the systems that broke,
and the patterns that keep repeating.

Every chapter follows a real story: a founder, a protocol, a collapse, a breakthrough.
The facts are public. The quotes are real. The timelines are documented.
What this book adds is the thread that connects them - the arc from a whitepaper
on a mailing list to a multi-trillion-dollar question that governments, banks,
and builders are still trying to answer.

This is the story of what they built, what broke, and what survived.

Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR)

From the author of A People's Guide to Capitalism, a clear-eyed look at the world of cryptocurrencies, cutting through the glitz and the scams to reveal how crypto mirrors and exacerbates the crises of capitalism

Cryptocurrencies have gone from being fringe investments relevant only to hardcore adherents to a multi-trillion industry with a direct line to Donald Trump's White House. The promises of crypto are wide-ranging, preying on a basic reality: people are alienated by an economic system that has excluded them and wonder if cryptocurrencies can offer a more transparent and inclusive alternative.

Enter Crypto-Capitalism, Hadas Thier's deft, accessible examination of the rise and fall and rise again of crypto. Drawing on years of reporting on the industry, its insiders, and the ordinary people impacted by its wild peaks and busts, Thier explains how cryptocurrencies work, elucidates the context and implications of their rise, and debunks the utopian mythology that animates their boosters.

By showing that systemic exploitation and domination are inherent in a crisis-ridden capitalist economy and are matters of class power, not technology, Thier convincingly cuts through the froth and the lies of financial dystopia. Along the way, she exposes the dangerous consequences of crypto's rise and offers alternative avenues for imagining what economic democracy could actually be.
