Entretiens

From California Governor Gavin Newsom comes an intimate and poignant account of identity, belonging, and the defining moments that inspired a life in politics “Go slow,” his political elders advised him, but Gavin Newsom has never known such a speed. For Newsom, the California Dream is what lured his father’s family from County Cork, Ireland, six generations ago. His great-great-grandfather, a cop, walked a beat in San Francisco, where almost 150 years later, Newsom would be elected as mayor, running on the values instilled in him by his family history: that California’s open arms must continue to extend to each new generation. Newsom has never lived anywhere but California. Born in San Francisco, his parents divorced at a young age, and his childhood was spent being tugged between two worlds: his mother worked three jobs in order to care for her children while his father, a close friend of the Getty family, brought Newsom into San Francisco society, a world of wealth and connections. The dissonance was frustrating, and made all the more difficult because of undiagnosed dyslexia, but the vantage point was valuable: he inherited his mother’s perseverance and his father’s reverence of California, not only its wildness, but its opportunity. In Young Man in a Hurry, Newsom traces the forces that have defined his ambitions as a politician and have pushed him to outpace the nation on myriad cutting-edge social issues that have since entered the mainstream. As mayor of San Francisco, he made waves when he violated state law in order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, more than ten years before the Supreme Court made such unions legal. He launched bold efforts to counter climate change, improve mental health care, and enhance gun safety, and worked to preserve the California Dream for his constituents. Elected as governor on the eve of unprecedented wildfires and entering office into immediate hyper-partisan headwinds from Washington, DC, Newsom has constantly and consistently stuck his neck out. Here for the first time, he reflects on the long personal journey that ultimately shaped him into one of the most recognizable and accomplished elected officials in America. Filled with intimate family history and written with candor and remarkable personal insight, here is a deeply resilient California story of identity, belonging, and the defining moments that inspired a life in politics.

A Memoir of Discovery

Young Man in a Hurry

'A beguiling portrait... reminds us that, ideologically and culturally, Morès anticipates the tragedies of the 20th century, and also those of today' The Times One of the most anticipated books of the year according to Financial Times and New Statesman The extraordinary story of the nineteenth-century French-Italian aristocrat Marquis de Morès, the father of fascism, and his ominous legacy In nineteenth-century France, the first fascist was born. Decades before Mussolini, the Marquis de Morès became the first populist and openly antisemitic leader in the Western world. A key figure behind the Dreyfus affair, he tore France apart with his inflammatory media rhetoric and violent stunts. Who was this man, who both anticipated and propelled the fascist politics that erupted in the twentieth century?Drawing on a wealth of original sources, award-winning historian Sergio Luzzatto explores the forgotten story of a father of fascism. He shows how, after losing aristocratic status in modern, democratic France, Morès led an adventurous life cattle ranching on the American frontier and building a railway in the jungles of Indochina - yet found all his schemes dogged by failure. He follows in Morès's footsteps, as, blaming supposed Jewish machinations for his defeats, he returned to France and soon controlled a large, violent militia of disgruntled workers. Even when his rapid political rise was torpedoed by a highly publicized financial scandal, his shadow continued to loom. In Vichy France, as Jewish people were being deported to Auschwitz, officials would gather to celebrate Morès's memory. Vivid and unsettling, The First Fascist is an engrossing exploration of the roots of our present discontent.

What lies underneath digital platforms—their invisible architecture and governance that determine everything visible. Every time you unlock your phone, stream a show, or start your car, you’re entering a world shaped by thousands of engineering decisions you’ll never see. Most platform conversations fixate on their visible canopy—business models, user experience, competitive strategy—the “leaves,” in a sense. Platforms by Amrit Tiwana excavates their roots. The book begins with a simple DNA test that separates authentic from faux platforms, then traces the forces turning tractors, pacemakers, and elevators into platforms. Using the platform trinity, the author explores principles behind why platforms behave so differently, why superior technology doesn’t always win, and why—unlike products that reach a final form—platforms never stop evolving. From there the book explains platforms’ two hidden root systems: The first system, architecture, shows how Lego-like “modular” design, frozen interfaces, and prefab building blocks let thousands of outsiders contribute pieces that snap into colossal systems. The second system, governance, describes where architecture confronts human behavior. Elegant architecture flails with poor governance, so both demand discipline.

From James B. Stewart, the New York Times bestselling co-author of Unscripted and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, a deeply reported investigation into Harvard University, what happened when the Trump administration declared war on it, and the epic battle between the old guard and new money for control over a fabled institution Harvard University, a symbol of excellence and prestige for nearly 400 years, has been under attack. The assault, by no means limited to the right-wing attacks on DEI, or the lawsuits brought by the Trump administration over billions of dollars in Federal funding, has exposed deep fault lines within academia and American society at large. The Harvard presidency is arguably the most powerful and influential position in academia, not least because it comes with huge sway over the university’s vast $68 billion endowment. Beginning with the controversial tenure of Lawrence Summers as president of Harvard, James Stewart goes behind the scenes with power brokers and students alike to reveal how Summers’s abrupt departure set the stage for a progressive backlash when Drew Faust was hired as his replacement, and for the choice of Claudine Gay as the university’s first Black president. After Hamas attacked Israel, Republican Congresswoman and Harvard graduate Elise Stefanik led a Congressional inquiry into antisemitism on campus. As the controversy intensified, Gay was accused of plagiarism and forced to resign. But these events were only the preamble to the multiple lawsuits the second Trump administration would file against Harvard in the years to come, forcing Harvard into the impossible position of trying to defend academic freedom at the risk of losing crucial funding. A propulsive, character-driven narrative, replete with bold-faced names, combining deep investigative reporting and breaking news, this will be the definitive account of an institution on the brink. Using Harvard as the prism, Stewart confronts some of the most entrenched and sensitive fault lines of our polarized age, as the countervailing forces of meritocracy, elitism, identity politics, and tradition bear down on higher education from all sides. At stake is not only the future of Harvard, America’s preeminent university, but the very idea of education itself, and the unending struggle for the soul of the nation.

The Che Guevara Library

A biography of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels by Che Guevara, revealing Che’s fervent interest in studying their lives and writing. Che Guevara wrote this biographical introduction to Marx and Engels after his 1965 mission to Africa. He studied the writing of the German revolutionaries intensively, and in his travels he immersed himself in the classic works of Marxism. He sought to draw lessons and inspiration from Marx and Engels, and noted: “The Cuban Revolution takes up Marx at the point where he put aside science to pick up his revolutionary rifle.” Many of Che’s comments about Marx might also refer to Che himself, such as his observation: “Such a humane man whose capacity for affection extended to all those suffering throughout the world, offering a message of committed struggle and indomitable optimism, has been distorted by history and turned into a stone idol.” With his tremendous grasp of theory and his own practical experience, Che observes Marx’s evolution through his own view of radical change in Cuba, considering how it might apply to other countries after they achieve their definitive liberation from colonialism.

A rollicking, eye-opening history of the Star Wars franchise: an unrivaled force in popular culture that changed the way Hollywood makes movies—and that is now imperiled by many of the industry forces it set in motion From the premiere of the first film in 1977, the Star Wars franchise not only captured the imaginations of billions of people—and billions of dollars of revenue—but also rewrote the rules of the entertainment industry. Game-changing special effects, must-have collectibles, and the richness of George Lucas’s ever-expanding narrative gave rise to a new Hollywood model in which the boundary between screen and life collapsed. Star Wars wasn’t just a movie, after all: it was an alternate universe, a moral code, a way of life. Over the last half-century, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, the Star Wars franchise has relied on an anti-establishment ethos, the savvy of executives, and the devotion of moviegoers to become a new American myth. But since its fateful acquisition by Disney in 2012, Star Wars has become a cautionary tale of Hollywood excess, and its present status as a corporate holding bears little resemblance to its origins. Drawing on scores of insider interviews and surveying fifty years of American culture and commerce, Schwartzel delivers fresh perspective on the Star Wars story, bringing to life the scrappy creative spirit of Lucasfilm’s early days; the box-office frenzy that rang in Hollywood’s blockbuster era and gave rise to a new industry playbook; and the scores of fans whose lives have been shaped by this singular force. A panoramic narrative of dreams, obsession, and power, Rebels and Empires is the untold history of Hollywood’s most storied epic.

The Epic Story and Enduring Power of Star Wars

Rebels and Empires

Ludwig Wittgenstein and Ben Richards met in the autumn of 1945, when Richards - a medical student - was attending one of Wittgenstein's courses. The 'loving friendship' (in Wittgenstein's words) which subsequently developed between them decisively coloured every aspect of Wittgenstein's last years. Their correspondence - consisting of more than 370 letters, cards, and telegrams, along with numerous drawings and attachments - starts in the summer of 1946, and ends in April 1951, just a week before Wittgenstein's death. It gives an incomparably vivid and touching picture of the last five years of Wittgenstein's life. His encounter with Richards was perhaps the deepest love and the greatest happiness of Wittgenstein's life. And yet these letters also reveal Wittgenstein as a lonely, vulnerable, and often overbearing man, painfully aware of his dependence on the affection of his much younger beloved friend, and painfully aware of the fragility of their connection. This collection of letters between Wittgenstein and Richards is not only the single largest correspondence of Wittgenstein's that has survived, but - more importantly - it is by far the most significant and revealing cache of letters between Wittgenstein and someone whom he loved romantically. They offer an entirely new window onto Wittgenstein's inner life, and a profound and moving testament to his emotional and intellectual concerns in his last years. Like all of Wittgenstein's writings, the letters are shot through with opinions, humour, and insights, delivered in Wittgenstein's typically sharp and powerful manner. In short, this is a most remarkable collection of documents - both for those interested in Wittgenstein's philosophy, and for those interested in the life of one of the 20th century's greatest thinkers.
