ISO 9001

2026 Quality Management Systems Jargon-Free Guidebook

ISO 9001 is a standard that defines the criteria for a quality management system. It is published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). ISO 9001 was first published in 1987 as a development of the popular BS 5750 series of Quality Assurance, and later Quality Management, standards. The standard has undergone several revisions, with the most recent being ISO 9001:2026. This standard applies to any organisation, regardless of size or industry, and helps organisations consistently provide products and services that meet customer expectations and regulatory requirements, where applicable. This guidebook isn't a substitute for the ISO 9001:2026 standard. The reader must be familiar with, or gain familiarity with, the ISO 9001 standard - that's the documented standard that specifies what the organisation is working towards. This document guides the reader through that standard and provides additional content to steer and support them. It offers advice and guidance in plain English, reducing jargon. It also strives to provide consistency in the terminology being used. Additionally, and most importantly, this guide provides access to 30 online document templates, spread over 320 A4 pages. Read those templates alongside the guidebook, then adapt them to suit the organisation's needs and circumstances.
