country survey

This book is an essential foundation text for oil and gas law as an area that has developed over the last decades, and considers its relevance to the UK oil and gas industry, with the UK government's commitments to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Split into four parts, the book considers the general framework of the International oil and gas industry; offers practical information on the overall UKCS framework; provides useful guidance on how to negotiate and review oil and gas contracts; and examines the future of the UKCS Oil and Gas industry. The Third Edition has been fully updated to include: - New rules for oil and gas drilling - The landmark case of R (Finch on behalf of the Weald Action Group & Others) v. Surrey County Council (& Others) - Technological advances - The UK's plans to reach net zero by 2050 Oil and Gas Law in the UK is written in a clear and reader-friendly style and includes detailed appendices on cross-boundary agreements and guidance on disputes. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Environmental Law online service.

The first book to investigate, analyze and theorize the creative processes of literary writers, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing uses author interviews, manuscript genetics and textual evidence to explore creativity from the authorial perspective. Studying an author's practice, literary form and contextual contingencies as elements that affect literary creativity, Karin Kukkoken develops theoretical models for examining the age-old problem of artistic creation and how it has been put to works by authors from the nineteenth century to the age of digital fiction, across a range of languages. With insights from the cognitive sciences, anthropology and philosophy of mind as well as literary studies, the book calls upon interviews with Siri Hustvedt, Marina Warner, Anne Weber, Camille Laurens, Gwenaëlle Aubry, Kate Pullinger, Gunnhild Øyehaug, Maria Stepanova and György Dragomán and studies the manuscripts of Charlotte Brontë, Cora Sandel, Elsa Morante and Italo Calvino. Overcoming the traditional distinction between creative agent, process and creative product, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing is as accessible and illuminating as it is important to understandings of human creativity.

This book celebrates the life and legacy of one of Ireland's greatest ever jurists - Gerard Hogan. Across his career as an academic, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union, and judge of the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court of Ireland, Gerard Hogan has had a profound influence on public law. He is widely regarded as Ireland's leading legal scholar, particularly in constitutional law, administrative law, and EU law. The volume in his honour focuses on the central role of courts in public law. It examines how courts shape constitutional systems, interpret legislation, hold public authorities accountable, and protect rights, while maintaining the balance between the executive, legislature, and citizens. Drawing on themes developed in his scholarship, opinions, and judgments, the book addresses issues such as judicial review, constitutional oversight, the rule of law, and the relationship between judicial independence, public confidence, democracy, and accountability. It also considers comparative and global perspectives on how courts perform these functions across different jurisdictions. Reflecting on Gerard Hogan's enduring contributions to debates on judicial review, separation of powers, fundamental rights, and judicial decision-making, the book serves as both a tribute and a lasting scholarly resource. At a time of ongoing constitutional challenges in Ireland and across Europe, it offers a timely reflection on the principles of public law that Gerard Hogan has shaped over several decades, both on and off the bench.

After Dark

Good Girl, Bad Blood

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

The gritty memoir of a former US Marine and Presidential Guard, who, after being unjustly held and abused in a Russian gulag for three years and freed in a high-profile prisoner exchange, seeks revenge against his former Russian captors by volunteering to fight in Ukraine. In August 2019, Trevor Reed, a former US Marine and Presidential Guard, was arrested in Russia on false, trumped-up charges. For three years, he was imprisoned in the infamous Russian gulag, where the inhumane treatment threatened his health so severely his parents and the U.S. government feared for his life. After losing roughly fifty pounds from his already trim body, he was released in a 2022 prisoner swap that dominated headlines. Most people would go home, try to move on with their lives, and forget the horrors they endured. But not Trevor Reed.Reed trained relentlessly to regain his health and strength, aiming to volunteer in Ukraine to fight the Russians and seek revenge. Having faced Russian cruelty up close, he knew what the Ukrainians were experiencing, and he knew he could help them. Just six months after being released from prison, Reed smuggled himself into Ukraine. He fought in one of the hottest fronts of the war . . . until one dark night a comrade stepped on a land mine. Reed almost lost his leg and his life, barely making it home to Texas alive.A harrowing, on-the-ground account of the war in Ukraine, Retribution is the story of one man’s dogged persistence and commitment to justice, regardless of the personal cost.

"Inside the reliable pull of a well-written love story, Frida Slattery As Herself is a skillful, unusual novel – clever, lucid and unexpected in the way of good theatre." — Guardian, "Book of the Day"A sweeping, witty, and wise novel following an actress and a writer-director—told through the plays they make together and the time they spend apart You could probably run cities on the energy generated between directors like him and actresses like her. When Frida Slattery and John Reddan meet in a Dublin pub in 2006, neither can imagine how they will come to shape and define each other’s lives. Frida is struggling to launch her acting career, while John is already gaining a name for himself as a director. From the first, they see in each other potential and the chance to create work that matters, though the lines between collaboration and exploitation, friendship and desire will prove dangerously slippery.John decides to cast Frida as the lead in his next play, putting the pair on a path to success, fame, and critical acclaim. With the financial crisis looming, the next fifteen years take them from Dublin to London, New York, and Los Angeles, and through success and disappointment, joy and heartbreak. Careers are built, marriages made and destroyed, but across great distance and time, Frida and John can never quite shake the other. Though their connection is tested and stretched to the point of rupture, something remains that outlasts their work and the social transformations of the period. Tracing the complex, winding path of a relationship, Frida Slattery As Herself is an exhilarating, richly imagined examination of art, authorship, love, betrayal, and finding one’s voice.

A Novel

Frida Slattery As Herself

A poignant story of love and regret, from a master of contemporary Irish fiction An Irish Times, RTÉ Culture and Big Issue Book of the Year for 2025 * 'David Park is one of Ireland's great novelists.' Roddy Doyle, author of The Commitments * For fans of Sebastian Faulks, Donal Ryan and Anne Tyler comes this beautiful novel following two troubled men, separated by nearly a century, bound by the ghosts of their past When George Allenby is put in charge of building a lake in the grounds of an imposing Irish manor house, he intends to do the job as swiftly as possible and return to Belfast. Allenby is still wrestling with his time as an officer during the First World War, burdened by the many things he could have done differently. Almost a century later, Alex and Ellie are preparing for their wedding, sparing no expense to hire a venue overlooking the very lake Allenby built all those years ago. Like Allenby before him, Alex is haunted by decisions he made in the past. Now, with the wedding drawing ever closer, he is at a crossroads. Telling the truth might free him from his guilt; it might also take away everything he cares about, including Ellie. In this masterful portrait of love and betrayal, David Park reveals the many ways the past seeps into the present: destructive, formidable, but also hopeful, in the moments of fragile beauty that remain.
