The Business of Outer Space assesses selected legal issues associated with commercial space activities. The book begins by explaining the historical background that has given rise to the diverse and expanding contemporary commercial space industry, including important milestones that have facilitated the growth of the industry. The book explains the various segments or categories that make up the commercial space industry including their associated goods and services. This provides the reader with the context needed to comprehend the growth and diversification of commercial space activities from space manufacturing to satellite data services.&nbsp;The book continues with&nbsp;a&nbsp;series of topical case studies of relevance to various space activities. For example, the book dedicates&nbsp;a&nbsp;chapter to examining the close connection that exists between commercial and military space activities and analysing how dual-use technologies offered by commercial entities have an important role to play in military space operations. The book continues with&nbsp;a&nbsp;deep dive into the emerging connections between the artificial intelligence industry and space industry, and the risks and opportunities therein.&nbsp;A&nbsp;significant and timely case study within the book is the regulation of satellite (mega) constellations. This case study examines commercial and regulatory issues associated with the deployment of satellite constellations, paying close attention to how current international space legal frameworks might regulate such activities. Of particular relevance to many space businesses is the topic of intellectual property. The book described in detail the application of patent law in the context of space activities and discusses how international space law and certain domestic laws may provide greater certainty for space actors with regards to intellectual property and space activities. Finally, considering the complex engineering considerations faced by many space companies, the book provides the reader with&nbsp;a&nbsp;detailed analysis of how&nbsp;a&nbsp;system-of-systems risk management approach can assist with some of the challenges associated with designing and operating commercial space missions.&nbsp;The work contained in this book is intended to provide the reader with series of select case studies examining topics related to commercial space activities. LITES - Legal Issues in Transdisciplinary Environmental Studies

This book investigates the urban crises of food insecurity and vacant land by examining how community gardens in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro serve as vital mechanisms for realizing the human right to food. Through a comparative study conducted between 2019 and 2023 involving 40 participants, the research explores urban commons’ practices and how they address dimensions of food availability, accessibility, acceptability, and sustainability. The findings reveal distinct motivations and effects shaped by local socioeconomic contexts: while Berlin’s gardens are primarily driven by socialization and environmental concerns, Rio de Janeiro’s gardens focus on food security and social empowerment. Despite the differences, both cities demonstrate a shared commitment to agroecological production as a tool for urban resilience. Ultimately, the study confirms that urban food-sharing practices in these spaces advance the right to food across various dimensions, highlighting the urgent need for urban governance that protects community gardens to foster a global social-ecological transformation.

Ius Gentium: Comparative Perspectives on Law and Justice

Whether in major world powers or smaller economies, constitutions around the globe are facing increasing challenges. In the United States—a country whose judiciary often dominates discussions on constitutionalism— President Donald Trump responded to unfavourable judicial rulings by calling for the impeachment of the judges involved, expressing his demands via tweets in March 2025. In January 2025, security detail was withdrawn from Kenya’s first female Chief Justice, highlighting the growing pressures faced by judiciaries worldwide. Issues such as the judicialization of politics and the protection of human rights have become enduring concerns across nearly every country. Emerging political and legal developments continually challenge courts and constitutions, often constraining the powers of judges, politicians, and other actors—while simultaneously creating new opportunities for these same actors to expand their influence. At the heart of these shifting dynamics lies a fundamental question: who holds whom accountable, to what extent, and under what conditions? This book explores various dimensions of constitutionalism in Africa and beyond, including, but not limited to, judicial independence, the judicialization of politics, and the politicization of the judiciary. What makes this volume a must-read is its interdisciplinary and comparative approach. Most chapters go beyond merely analysing legal provisions that empower or weaken different branches of government; they also examine the social, political, and economic factors that shape constitutionalism. Two chapters offer a comparative analysis of African and non-African jurisdictions.&nbsp;The final chapter synthesizes the key takeaways from the book.

There is always a dark side, and taxation in its international dimension is no less. Pecunia, being the cash, drives it more than philosophical principles like justice or solidarity. International taxpayers, whether individuals or corporations, do not feel the same obligations vis à vis the society where they temporarily live, work and produce their wealth as if they would feel if they were permanently integrated in a country. The reader of this textbook will be conducted within the technicalities of international taxation by way of an original perspective on philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) affording (i) who has the right to exercise the power to tax by examining the criteria to determine the jurisdiction to tax both in the worldwide and territorial system, (ii) how to exercise the power to tax, through tax return or withholding tax, (iii) what to tax among active and passive income within inbound and outbound taxation, (iv) how much to tax through the transfer pricing, (v) international taxation as part of international law, (vi) international tax treaties, and finally (vii) the BEPS projects that represent the very last evolution in the field. Scandals, leaks as a James Bond movie, aggressive tax planning techniques and related case law, involving high-net-worth individuals as well as multinational corporations, bring the reader to discover that each single State belonging to the international community acts as a chess player before the international tax chessboard observing as pieces its own economy, its own society, and balancing any tax policy decision with possible reactions of domestic taxpayers that could move away, those foreign taxpayers that could decide to move in, and possible retaliations from other States. The ambition is to get the reader convinced that, as the Sicilian Tancredi Falconeri warns his uncle Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina, in the masterpiece book “The Leopard” of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, “everything must change because everything remains as it is”, and only exploring what is behind the stage of international taxation clarifies how this important piece of social science really works.

In the European multi-level system, national law and EU law are linked in such a way that EU law establishes requirements for national private law in terms of its substance and, in some cases, its form, but never in terms of its doctrinal principles. Viktoria Kraetzig develops a paradigm for processing EU law in the national legal orders: the "blindness" of the higher level towards doctrinal concepts of the lower level. She points out that the legal actors in the Member States shall not use their own conceptual frameworks to interpret EU law and impose doctrinal thinking of their own system on it. Accordingly, the questions referred to the CJEU must be free of doctrinal assumptions inherent in the national systems as the court, as an actor of Union law, cannot be familiar with them. The CJEU delivers its judgments without knowledge of doctrinal concepts of the Member States legal orders' and without adjusting its answers to national doctrinal thinking.
