In challenging Eurocentric histories and accounts of international law, this book introduces an alternative history of pre-independence India.Western scholars trace the genesis of international law to Europe. However, scholars from the Global South trace the history of international law to different civilisations of the world existing since ancient times. They argue that European narratives are not sufficient to explain the true history of international law and that the history of international law should shed itself of its Eurocentrism and adopt a multi-civilisational perspective, according to which local and national histories can contribute towards a truly global history and in so doing enhance the legitimacy of international law. Taking up this perspective, the author traces the history of key elements of international law - such as diplomacy, trade and war - in and to pre-independent India. As Grotius himself acknowledged, in taking his cue from the practices of Asian States whilst arguing for the freedom of the seas, the author thereby elicits the contribution made by India, among other Global South nations, to the evolution and development of international law.The History of International Law in India is an alternative account of the history of international law and will appeal to scholars and students in the areas of legal history, international law -especially Third World approaches to international law - and South Asian Studies.

This volume explores emerging patterns of migration from Central Asia to underrepresented destinations such as Australia, Japan, South Korea, Nordic countries, and Türkiye. It critically examines diverse dimensions of mobility—labor migration, student migration, return migration, gendered experiences, diaspora activism, digital media, and host country responses—through empirically grounded and theoretically rich chapters. Drawing on in-depth case studies and fieldwork, this volume contributes to global migration studies while offering unique insights into post-Soviet identity transformations and comparative integration experiences.
It also responds to pressing contemporary concerns, including Russian migration to Central Asia post-Ukraine invasion, migration governance during COVID-19, and gender advocacy through digital platforms in authoritarian contexts. The chapters bring together voices from early-career and senior scholars, combining interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, international relations, political science, anthropology, and media studies.
Timur Dadabaev is a Professor of International Relations and the Director of the Special Program for Japanese and Eurasian Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Tsukuba, Japan. Shigeto Sonoda is a Professor of Sociology and Asian Studies at the University of Tokyo. His recent book publications include Japan-China Relations 2001-2022 (co-ed., 2023), Uzbek Migrants and Japanese Society (co-ed., 2023), and Japan-China Exchange (ed., 2025, all published by the University of Tokyo Press in Japanese).
Kirill Nourzhanov is Associate Professor and Deputy Director and Convenor of Higher Degree by Research studies at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia). His recent publications include The Spectre of Afghanistan: Security in Central Asia (2021) co-authored with Amin Saikal, and Soft Power in Central Asia. Consequently, market participants flow between economic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. This generates motives for continued search for better market opportunities, and for bargaining between potential trading partners. This volume takes the empirical analysis of markets with frictions to a new level by using unique merged registers from Denmark on firm accounting data, individual employee data, and international trade data to estimate empirically the relevant flow rates, dispersions, and relations among key variables of interest, including productivity, firm size, wages, exports, growth, and unemployment. The results serve to inform researchers and policy makers about the functioning of markets, justify the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and provide an understanding of cycles, adjustment, and potentials for public policy.
