Bhupinder S. Chimni, International Law and Global Justice: The Imperative of Climate Justice The lecture explores the relationship between "international law and global justice". It first turns to the question of legitimacy of international laws which has in recent decades been actively debated in the disciplinary literature. The lecture inter alia contends that since the concepts of "legitimacy" and "justice" raise analogous issues, the debate anticipated the turn to the subject of global justice. The lecture then addresses the significant epistemic objections advanced against establishing a thick relationship between international law and the goal of global justice. The analytical and practical advantages of positing a positive linkage between international law and global justice are briefly noted thereafter. The lecture goes on to exemplify these understandings arguing that the pursuit of "climate justice" is critical to addressing the problem of global warming. It identifies in this regard the central elements of the concept of "climate justice" and touches on some aspects of the existing climate debate, including the principal cause of the climate crisis, the need for a radical response, and the proposed use of carbon border adjustment mechanisms by Global North nations. The lecture goes on to note that a just climate and global order calls for among other things structural reforms in the workings of global capitalism. It eventually turns to the question of agency and speaks of the possible social and political forces and actors that can promote the realization of justice in the global legal order. This second volume builds upon the insights of the first volume, which includes national reports on the use of constitutional interpretation. In Volume 2, the analysis is extended beyond the national context, discussing its application in the supranational and international contexts, including in EU law and the domestic use of international law. This volume is the first in-depth collection to explore the impact of language on the field of comparative constitutional law. It addresses the epistemological and conceptual implications of English as the lingua franca. In this regard, it considers the global influence of Anglophone jurisdictions in orienting the discourse through the identification of concepts, designs and ideas that warrant engagement and exploration outside of those origin jurisdictions. In doing so, the book underscores that language is not a neutral device but can produce hegemonic pressures and expectations. It further makes the role of language in conducting comparative constitutional law explicit, so that its users can be more deliberate in their selection of foreign materials and are made conscious of the limitations of their findings due to language barriers. The book calls for a reckoning with the rich constitutional vocabulary that non-Anglophone jurisdictions have to offer to ensure a more holistic approach to the creation of knowledge. It also emphasises the need for the contextualised study of constitutional phenomena to appreciate how these are shaped by linguistic choices. In addition to raising awareness about language's significance as an epistemological, conceptual and methodological device, the volume also puts forward constructive tools and techniques to harness language's potential, making it an indispensable resource for scholars, students, lawmakers and judges.

The Language of Comparative Constitutional Law

This book is the first comprehensive academic treatment of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and employment rights, which has a global vocation demonstrated by having been ratified by 173 States since it was adopted in 1966. Workers' rights need protection and reinforcement. To achieve this aim, international human rights standards can play an important role. The ICESCR is the most important global UN instrument in this respect. It covers a wide range of employment rights, including the right to strike, and has global application. But it is not sufficiently developed and used, and national implementation often needs improvement. Part 1 of the book analyses general issues related to the Covenant, such as context, development, challenges, influences at the global and regional levels, interpretation and procedural elements. Part 2 deals with the specific provisions which are directly linked to the employment relation. The book is based on a thorough analysis, mainly, but not exclusively, of the case law of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), that is monitoring the national implementation of the Covenant. Together, the chapters in this book will empower academics and practitioners in labour law to find answers to relevant and practical problems in order to better enforce and improve workers' rights. The book is the result of a project by the 'Transnational Trade Union Rights' experts Network (TTUR), linked to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI).

Should we give up privacy to fight disease, for national security, or to help train AI systems? Recent crises, from the Covid-19 pandemic to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, from Gaza and Afghanistan to the seemingly unstoppable rise of AI, have put privacy under severe pressure. The different threats to our privacy revealed by these crises tell parallel stories and are inextricably linked. There are common themes and common technologies - the threats involve the same data, the same profiling systems and the same approaches. In many cases the systems are run or owned by the same small set of companies, controlled by the same few people. Addressing them is difficult but possible - this essential book outlines how.
