No One Gets Out Unscarred makes a simple but rarely acknowledged case: America's prison system is failing not only the people it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which almost everyone returns. At the heart of the book is an extraordinary exchange between two men who spent decades on opposite sides of the bars. Robert Barton has been incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons. Jack Donson is a retired Bureau of Prisons official who began as a correctional officer and rose to become a case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal how a system designed to punish and control ends up brutalizing prisoners while simultaneously eroding staff morale, health, and judgment, producing an adversarial environment that makes everyone less safe.
