Die Entzauberung des Tech-Oligarchen Elon Musk

For decades, the US assumed ideas would naturally flow from research into commercialization. That assumption no longer holds. As Anne Marie Knott shows, the US innovation system is no longer fit for purpose in an age of great-power rivalry. Since 1980, American R&D productivity has fallen dramatically, while China has become far better at turning R&D into growth. Why? Because the two countries operate from fundamentally different models of innovation. The United States follows a 'river' logic: produce frontier science and trust the market to carry discoveries downstream. China follows a 'lake' logic: absorb, develop, diffuse, and capture value. Drawing on new empirical research and a widely applicable measure of R&D productivity, Knott challenges seven myths shaping US innovation policy and offers a reform agenda built less on new spending than on using existing tools far more effectively. The result is a provocative account of innovation, growth, and national power.

Agentic AI and AI Agents

The first book to investigate, analyze and theorize the creative processes of literary writers, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing uses author interviews, manuscript genetics and textual evidence to explore creativity from the authorial perspective. Studying an author's practice, literary form and contextual contingencies as elements that affect literary creativity, Karin Kukkoken develops theoretical models for examining the age-old problem of artistic creation and how it has been put to works by authors from the nineteenth century to the age of digital fiction, across a range of languages. With insights from the cognitive sciences, anthropology and philosophy of mind as well as literary studies, the book calls upon interviews with Siri Hustvedt, Marina Warner, Anne Weber, Camille Laurens, Gwenaëlle Aubry, Kate Pullinger, Gunnhild Øyehaug, Maria Stepanova and György Dragomán and studies the manuscripts of Charlotte Brontë, Cora Sandel, Elsa Morante and Italo Calvino. Overcoming the traditional distinction between creative agent, process and creative product, Creativity and Contingency in Literary Writing is as accessible and illuminating as it is important to understandings of human creativity.

Should we give up privacy to fight disease, for national security, or to help train AI systems? Recent crises, from the Covid-19 pandemic to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, from Gaza and Afghanistan to the seemingly unstoppable rise of AI, have put privacy under severe pressure. Privacy in Crisis argues the opposite: these crises show that privacy needs to be protected even more. Privacy in Crisis looks at vital current issues: at political manipulation and misinformation, government surveillance, racial tension, hybrid and cyberwarfare (and real wars, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza), the overwhelming power of the internet giants, and surveillance society, and how interference with privacy is key in all of them. It shows how specific crises bring many of these issues together in perfect storms of privacy invasion. The different threats to our privacy revealed by these crises tell parallel stories and are inextricably linked. There are common themes and common technologies - the threats involve the same data, the same profiling systems and the same approaches. In many cases the systems are run or owned by the same small set of companies, controlled by the same few people. Addressing them is difficult but possible - this essential book outlines how.

The Art Law Library

This open access book investigates the role played by copyright on the digitisation of cultural heritage from three angles: the theoretical differences between cultural property law and copyright; a comparative analysis of the EU, UK, and US; and analysis of current practices and concerns, based on empirical research. As heritage digitisation projects become increasingly common for purposes such as preservation and access, the impact of copyright is also becoming more problematic. In order to provide a full and current picture of the copyright problem, the book first introduces the reader to the debates on the scope and ownership of cultural heritage and provides an overview of the copyright implications of the digitisation process and newer uses, including 2D and 3D scanning; virtual and augmented reality; text and data mining; and artificial intelligence. The author then divides the main critical analysis into three parts, referred to as the 'clashes with copyright'. The first, clash in theory, lies between cultural property law and copyright justification theories. The second clash is in the different legal approaches to digitising in-copyright, public domain, orphan, out-of-commerce and unpublished works in the chosen jurisdictions, focusing on the relevant rights and defences. The third clash is in the interests of stakeholders, based on public reactions to existing projects and cases, supported by interviews with heritage professionals engaging in digitisation. By placing itself in this particular intersection of law, heritage, and technology, the book will be of interest to both intellectual property academics and cultural heritage professionals. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

'An excellent look at what Palantir does, as well as a fascinating insight into the mind of its eccentric chief executive' TelegraphPalantir Technologies is the most interesting company in the world - and the most controversial. Palantir builds data integration software: its technology ingests vast quantities of information and quickly identifies patterns, trends and connections that might elude the human eye. Founded in 2003 to help the U.S. government in the war on terrorism - an early investor was the CIA - Palantir is now a $400 billion global colossus whose software is used by major intelligence services (including the Mossad), the U.S. military, the National Health Service in England, and corporate giants like Airbus and BP. From AI to counterterrorism to climate change to immigration to financial fraud to healthcare to the future of warfare, the company is at the nexus of the most critical issues of the twenty-first century. Its billionaire CEO, Alex Karp, is a distinctive figure on the global business scene. A biracial Jew who is also severely dyslexic, Karp has built Palantir into a tech giant despite having no background in either business or computer science. Instead, he's a trained philosopher who has become known for his strongly held views on a range of issues and for his willingness to grapple with the moral and ethical implications of Palantir's work. Those questions have taken on added urgency during the Trump era, which has also brought attention to the political activism of Karp's close friend and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel. In The Philosopher in the Valley, journalist Michael Steinberger is the first to tell the story of Alex Karp and Palantir from the beginning. Steinberger offers new biographical details and a rich psychological portrait of the man leading one of the world's most secretive companies. Full of revelations, this is an urgent and insightful book about technological power, the surveillance state and the future we all face.

How to Own the World

Many people remain unaware of the scale and urgency of Africa’s food crisis, in part because current

policies fail to capture its full complexity. This crisis is shaped by a tangled web of natural and human-

made factors, and without a comprehensive, systems-level approach, meaningful solutions remain out

of reach. Tackling this involves concentrated policies that go beyond technical fixes—it demands

coordinated efforts that bridge sectors, disciplines, and national borders.

Using the metaphor of the Gordian Knot to underscore just how intricate and entrenched the problem

has become, this book examines environmental and climatic challenges. The first section of the book

includes chapters dealing with the natural factors for the crisis, and the second section will encompass

chapters addressing human-made factors, such as political, economic, and social drivers. Each chapter

includes targeted policy recommendations grounded in current research.

Weaving together interdisciplinary research and analysis, the book offers actionable insights and

opportunities to address the manmade and environmental problems, furthering the food crisis in Africa

today.

A 21st Century Gordian Knot

Socioeconomic Effects of the Food Crisis in Africa

Argentine Freedom
is the first account of the most disruptive figure in Argentine history since the nation’s return to democracy. In just a few years, Javier Milei rose from television economist and social media provocateur to president of a country long defined by crisis, state intervention, and political polarization. His ascent has sparked fierce debate at home and abroad: Is Milei a threat to democracy, a neo-conservative, or the herald of a much larger revival of the classical liberal tradition?

The book provides a balanced examination of Milei’s rise to power. Rather than judging his policies, economic historian Sebastián Álvarez and political philosopher Ezequiel Spector ask a deeper set of questions: Where do Milei’s ideas come from? How do they relate to Argentina’s liberal tradition and its history of populism, socialism, and authoritarianism? And what does his presidency reveal about the tensions between liberty, equality, and democracy in the twenty-first century?

Blending economic history, political philosophy, and contemporary analysis,
Argentine Freedom
traces Argentina’s long ideological arc from the liberal foundations of the 1853 Constitution, through Peronism, military rule, neoliberal reform, and the interventionist turn after the 2001 collapse, to the two liberal “waves” that culminated in Milei’s election. Along the way, it unpacks the meanings of liberalism and libertarianism, contrasts them with their main rivals, and situates Milei within both national history and a broader global surge of anti-establishment leaders.

The resulting book offers a new way to understand Javier Milei as a political actor—and Argentina as a country once again at a crossroads.
Sebastián Álvarez
is Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile and Associate Researcher at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. His work explores the history of finance and banking in Latin America, with particular attention to how capital markets shape economic policy and international relations. He is the author of

Ezequiel Spector
is Research Professor and Director of the Master of Arts program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile. He is the author of
Freedom as Social Cooperation
 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026).

An acclaimed New York Times Magazine writer brings us into the world of the controversial technology firm Palantir and its very colorful and outspoken CEO, Alex Karp, tracing the ascent of Big Data, the rise of surveillance technology, and the shifting global balance of power in the 21st century. Palantir builds data integration software: its technology ingests vast quantities of information and quickly identifies patterns, trends, and connections that might elude the human eye. Founded in 2003 to help the US government in the war on terrorism—an early investor was the CIA—Palantir is now a $400 billion global colossus whose software is used by major intelligence services (including the Mossad), the US military, dozens of federal agencies, and corporate giants like Airbus and BP. From AI to counterterrorism to climate change to immigration to financial fraud to the future of warfare, the company is at the nexus of the most critical issues of the 21st century. Its CEO, Alex Karp, is a distinctive figure on the global business scene. In The Philosopher in the Valley, journalist Michael Steinberger explores the world of Alex Karp, Palantir, and the future that they are leading us toward. It is an urgent and illuminating work about one of Silicon Valley’s most secretive and powerful companies, whose technology is at the leading edge of the surveillance state.
