Development and Its Discontents is a critical examination of development studies' history and what it has become, and what it might yet be. It argues that the field is increasingly differentiated along competing modes of thought, worldviews, and claims to knowledge, bringing long-running debates about the study of development back into sharp focus. Drawing on cross-disciplinary thinking on development, from the rise of classical development economics and the anti-colonial momentum of the Bandung era to contemporary decolonial critiques, the book maps the intellectual currents that have shaped development studies and the tensions and debates that now structure it. The result is a framework for recognising the field's internal pluralism and for taking interdisciplinarity more seriously, without pretending that its disagreements are merely semantic. The conference was organized on 22nd and 23rd November 2024 at University of Economics and Business, Vietnam National University - Hanoi. This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)share with one another in developing the principles of private international law.


The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards.


Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Issues around marriage, divorce, matrimonial property, succession and surrogacy are also addressed, considering the implication of such aspects through the increased movement of persons.


The book is a useful comparative resource for the governments of the BRICS countries, legislators, traders, academics, researchers and students looking for an in-depth discussion of the reciprocal lessons that these countries may have to offer one another on these issues.

China's Infrastructure Aid and Investment

Most works on Asian or global studies adopt mainstream Neoclassical methods to explain economic and social development. However, quantitative and optimisation techniques are unable to provide a deep understanding of policy change between the West and East Asia. To fill the gap, this book uses evolutionary perspective to interpret economic and social transformations of two global powers, namely, the United States and China. Specifically, this book outlines the roles of culture, institutions and entrepreneurship in the analysis. Instead of logical empiricism in the English tradition, our approach is interpretative and storytelling in continental European tradition. In other words, we adopt hermeneutics and phenomenology in the analysis and apply humanity to economics. There are two aims of this book. First, it outlines the evolution of Austrian evolutionary economics and second, the role of learning in the decision-making process. It focuses on how decision makers learn and how good and bad learners are differentiated.
