As inequality, inflation, and overwhelming corporate power threaten democracy, a rising-star economist asks what it would mean to create an anti-fascist economics that guarantees dignity for all. On the night of President Trump's second presidential victory, economist Isabella Weber tweeted: "Can we now finally have a serious conversation about an anti-fascist economics?" In her view, Democrats had missed the seriousness of the affordability crisis in the wake of pandemic-era inflation. By refusing to step in to protect their constituencies against corporate profiteering and price shocks in essentials, they left room amidst the global crisis for the resurgence of the politics of resentment that Trump and the right reveled in. Her question, though, was a bold one with implications that reached far beyond one election. In a neoliberal world, we tell people at the same time: Democracy is the highest form of political organization. And: When it comes to the economy, to the material foundation of our life, the best the representatives of the people can do is to subordinate their constituencies to the corporate pursuit of profits. This basic contradiction between the rule of the people and the rule of the market makes neoliberal democracy vulnerable to the threat of fascism, she argues. Economists have too often acted as prophets of market subordination and ended up waxing the slippery slope to fascism. Isabella Weber knows that if we are serious about saving democracy and preventing the further rise of fascists, we need an economics that serves democracy and centers people's needs and dignity rather than seeing their fulfillment as a welcome side effect in the pursuit of other goals. In Anti-Fascist Economics, Weber proposes just such a way out. She envisions an economics that strives to make life on our planet livable for all, that confronts rather than conceals corporate power, and that charts the way towards international cooperation rather than getting stuck in the dichotomy of free trade and trade wars. The émigré merchant Stephen Girard of Philadelphia (1750-1831) embodied many of the values associated with the revolutionary American republic he chose to call home. After haphazardly arriving in Philadelphia in 1776, the Frenchman benefited mightily from the economic opportunities of his volatile era. As he entered maturity, the merchant-banker found meaning through civic leadership and his famous last will and testament, in which he codified his approach to national progress through civic works. Studying Girard's philosophy of engaged citizenship illuminates the cultural forces at work in the early United States.&nbsp; Girard also bequeathed to posterity an enormous cache of archival records, a substantial library, a diverse collection of fine and decorative art, as well as an intriguing assemblage of material culture related to the careers of his "Philosopher Ships," named for his favored authors. Palgrave Insights into Apocalypse Economics

This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.

Extreme Uneven Development

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the reintroduction and recovery of the Mexican wolf in the American Southwest, with a particular focus on the role of the Federal judiciary. Edward A. Fitzgerald contends that federal courts have played a critical role in facilitating the species' return, primarily through their interpretation of statutory law - most notably, the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The courts rejected challenges from the livestock industry, reaffirmed Federal authority over the recovery process, and struck down certain Federal regulations that hindered effective wolf management. However, Fitzgerald argues that the judiciary also made significant missteps. Federal courts upheld revised Mexican wolf management regulations and recovery plans that failed to meet the ESA's requirement to rely on the "best available science." Additionally, the courts issued inconsistent rulings concerning the construction of border barriers. While they blocked the Trump administration's unauthorized transfer of funds for wall construction, they repeatedly and erroneously upheld the Secretary of Homeland Security's waiver authority. This authority permitted border wall construction to proceed in violation of Federal, state, and local laws - actions Fitzgerald claims exceeded statutory limits and violated the nondelegation doctrine. Providing a comprehensive and detailed examination of the legal challenges surrounding the Endangered Species Act and the recovery of the Mexican gray wolf, this book will be of interest to legal scholars, policymakers, and conservation advocates.
