Bastian lebt in seiner eigenen Welt.

Many people remain unaware of the scale and urgency of Africa’s food crisis, in part because current

policies fail to capture its full complexity. This crisis is shaped by a tangled web of natural and human-

made factors, and without a comprehensive, systems-level approach, meaningful solutions remain out

of reach. Tackling this involves concentrated policies that go beyond technical fixes—it demands

coordinated efforts that bridge sectors, disciplines, and national borders.

Using the metaphor of the Gordian Knot to underscore just how intricate and entrenched the problem

has become, this book examines environmental and climatic challenges. The first section of the book

includes chapters dealing with the natural factors for the crisis, and the second section will encompass

chapters addressing human-made factors, such as political, economic, and social drivers. Each chapter

includes targeted policy recommendations grounded in current research.

Weaving together interdisciplinary research and analysis, the book offers actionable insights and

opportunities to address the manmade and environmental problems, furthering the food crisis in Africa

today.
Judith Irene Nagasha

Her research focuses on the gender perspectives in food security, climate change, and indigenous knowledge.

A 21st Century Gordian Knot

Socioeconomic Effects of the Food Crisis in Africa

Ibero-American Criminal Sciences

This book offers the first comprehensive English-language exploration of juvenicide, a concept that examines the killing of young people as a form of structural violence rather than ordinary homicide. While the term has circulated widely in Latin American scholarship, this volume brings together leading voices to consolidate its theoretical foundations and demonstrate its relevance across diverse contexts. The book is organized into four sections that collectively map the field of juvenicide studies. The first section establishes the conceptual framework and situates juvenicide within contemporary crises affecting youth. The second examines intersectional dimensions, including age, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, to show how these factors shape vulnerability to lethal violence. The third section analyzes institutional structures—state power, neoliberal policies, education systems, and criminal apparatus—that enable and normalize juvenicide. The final section turns to resistance, documenting collective struggles that challenge the disposability of young lives in countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia.By framing juvenicide as a “total social fact,” the volume illuminates the political, structural, and symbolic forces that render certain youth populations expendable under neoliberal capitalism. Combining empirical research with conceptual innovation, this book provides critical insights for scholars of youth and violence, policymakers, and practitioners. It also serves as a valuable resource for courses on inequality, violence, and social justice in Latin America and beyond.

Key Ideas in Law

This book explores the law, philosophy, and wider implications of that brief but highly consequential moment when a judge imposes sentence on a convicted offender. Sentencing is one of the most contested aspects of contemporary criminal justice. It is an important field of study, both as an instance of coercive state power over the citizen and as the point at which the statutory purposes of punishment are given public expression. Focusing on England and Wales, with occasional comparative reference to sentencing practice around the world, topics include the legal and ethical implications of pleading guilty, the origin and development of sentencing guidelines, and the 'ordinary' language in which the sentence itself must be pronounced in open court. Tensions arise over the appropriate treatment of cohorts including the young, racialised, mentally disordered, and dangerous, and the disparate outcomes such treatment can generate. At a time of unprecedented crisis - from the phenomenon of 'sentence inflation' 50 years in the making, to the criminal court backlog, to an overcrowded prison estate - the book concludes with an appraisal and critique of the Sentencing Act 2026. The Act was pitched as a once-in-a-generation attempt at substantive justice reform, but its precise impact remains to be seen. Key Features · Offers an original account of a field in transition, equipping readers with a rich and robust evidence base · Reconciles classical theories of punishment with modern case law and sentencing practice · Comparative insights provide perspective and distance, enabling readers to form their own views on a complex field

Palgrave Insights into Apocalypse Economics

This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other. It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically.

50 Shades of Grey

Legal Foundations of American Immigration Policy

Crafting an Immigrant Republic

Palgrave Studies in Race, Ethnicity, Indigeneity and Criminal Justice

The edited collection gathers contributions from across the world and engages in constructive debate about fundamental issues regarding Indigenous peoples in connection with issues of crime and harm. It provides the most diverse and global coverage of this topic across five continents. Existing explorations of Indigenous peoples in relation to issues of crime and harm have proven valuable in challenging, decentring, and renewing criminology. Yet, this research area remains at the margins of criminology, and many fundamental questions—such as the meaning of ‘being Indigenous’—await deeper exploration. Key themes explored by the book include: the meaning of Indigeneity; Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous cosmologies, and their implications for the study of crime; the meaning of ‘crime’ for Indigenous peoples; causes, consequences, and types of crimes and harms against Indigenous Peoples; Indigenous peoples and gender; Indigenous systems of justice; and Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and state criminal justice systems. This collection does not seek consensus but reflects diversity and depth. It offers an introduction to Indigenous criminology and fundamental concepts, as well as a series of case studies and more intricate theorisation.David R. Goyes
is a researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, with a PhD in criminology. He has contributed extensively to the study of North-South global relations, environmental conflicts, and Indigenous issues. Goyes is editor-in-chief of the
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
and a member of several editorial boards.
Angie Cuchimba
is a researcher at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, Colombia. Cuchimba holds a law degree from the same university. She is an Indigenous leader in the Nasa Community and has represented her People worldwide in diverse meetings. Together with Goyes, Cuchimba has published articles about Indigenous rights and justice in some of the best journals in the world.

Rachel Locke
