 'Wenn ich an Charlie denke', sagt Simple-Minds-Sänger Jim Kerr, 'dann denke ich nicht daran, wie wir bei Live Aid oder beim Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert zusammen auf der Bühne standen, sondern daran, wie ich ihn als Achtjährigen im Sandkasten spielen sah, als wir uns das erste Mal begegneten.' Denn so begann im Grunde die Karriere der Simple Minds: mit Jim Kerr und Charlie Burchill, zwei Jungen aus bescheidenen Verhältnissen im grauen Glasgow, die beste Freunde wurden und 15 Jahre später den Klang der Achtzigerjahre maßgeblich prägten.

Nach ersten Versuchen mit Punk und New Wave entwickelten die Simple Minds einen mitreißenden hymnischen Rock-Sound, wie ihn sonst höchstens noch U2 ablieferten, und konnten im Vorprogramm von Peter Gabriel erste internationale Erfahrungen sammeln. Der große Durchbruch kam 1985 mit 'Don't You (Forget About Me)', als der Song für den Soundtrack des Kino-Blockbusters

 ausgewählt wurde. Die Simple Minds hatten ihren ersten Nummer-1-Hit in den USA und traten ihren Siegeszug durch die großen Hallen und Stadien der Welt an.

 

 40 Jahre später sind Jim Kerr und Charlie Burchill immer noch die treibende Kraft hinter den Simple Minds, die 2022 mit 
 Direction Of The Heart
 ihr 20. Album veröffentlichten. Was hinter den Kulissen der Band, aber auch sonst in ihrem Leben geschah, haben die beiden jetzt zusammen mit dem britischen Journalisten Graeme Thomson in Worte gefasst. Zwei Männer, zwei Erinnerungen, zwei verschiedene Stimmen - auf diese Weise ist die Autobiografie der Simple Minds nicht nur zu einem großen Rock-Buch geworden, sondern würdigt vor allem eine ganz besondere Freundschaft, die bis heute hält.

A portrait and analysis of East German band Silly's popular music masterpiece, Februar, that mirrors the collapse of socialism. In early 1989, nine months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the band Silly released Februar, one of the most important albums in the history of rock music in the GDR. The record was both-an artistic masterpiece, and an eloquent sign of the times, with lyrics that commented on the political erosion afoot in East Europe and anticipated the collapse of socialism. That the words were able to overcome the hurdles typically set by censorship in the GDR owed in part to the extraordinary origins of the album. Februar was the only large-scale popular music coproduction between East and West Germany, jointly realized by Amiga in socialist East Germany and Ariola in the capitalist West. Ariola assumed the costs for the album, assuring itself the final say. Recorded in West Berlin, the album was released in both Germanies. Yet just as the song sequence and narrative of the record varied considerably from East to West, so too did its presentation and reception. Februar illustrated the divergent meanings rock music held in the rival societies, confirming its special power in the GDR. Differently from what black-white interpretations suggest, rock in East Germany developed along lines marked by unexpected possibilities, productive contradictions, and constant negotiations between artists and the state. This is the subject of this book. It portrays Februar as the culmination of a long-process of self-empowerment, throughout which Silly gained increasing artistic and political leeway.
