Born from a desire for creative freedom, web series often circumvent screen industry gatekeepers and attract smaller, niche audiences; but fewer views do not necessarily make the format, or its audience engagement, less valuable. This book looks behind the scenes to uncover how and why audiences engaged with nine Australian web series released between 2020 and 2023. Interviews with web series producers reveal their motivations, audience acquisition and maintenance strategies, funding methods, and platform specific approaches. These first-hand accounts are then compared with viewership metrics and the content of audience commentary, resulting in the illumination of social, cultural, and industrial values of audience engagement with these innovative productions. This book identifies key factors that influence audience behaviours such as perceived authenticity, platform choice, and the types, forms, and costs of engaging with web series. These factors are considered with respect to online community building, relationships between creators and audiences, and commercial uses of the format, resulting in the creation of a typology of web series audiences. Readers benefit from understanding the value and characteristics of each type of viewer across a diverse range of examples featuring differing audience demographics, zero to over $1 million budgets, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. Vibrant narratives are used to convey each series' backstory, providing an informative and engaging reading experience for screen industry practitioners, marketing and broadcast professionals, and aspiring filmmakers. Academics and students in the fields of media studies, audience engagement, screen production, creative labour and entrepreneurship, social media, and algorithmic culture will also benefit from this research.

This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

Background Matters: Volume 9

Freeing ourselves from the top-down control of tech oligarchs Coded power is social control—power over other people’s relationships. This can be seen today in the top-down control over data exerted by tech oligarchs—billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. DOGE’s takeover of key government institutions early in the second Trump administration was a particularly blatant example of an attempt to exercise coded power by tapping into critical information systems of government. In this book, Co-Pierre Georg and Katharina Pistor call for empowering data producers—that is, all of us who use AI and search engines, or post on social media—rather than those who control proprietary data infrastructures. Georg, an economist, and Pistor, a legal scholar, explain that coded power emerges when some assert power over the fabric that shapes society. Unchecked, it penetrates deeply into social relationships in order to advance the interests of the coders—the oligarchs—and their clients. Legal coded power goes back centuries. Digital coded power and its effect on our society have become apparent only recently. It is exercised as despotic power imposed by the will of the coders to deny data producers the right to self-determination. Choices about digital technology made in the past, Georg and Pistor argue, were often driven by libertarian ideology rather than technological inevitability. They propose an alternative, decentralized structure, aided by the blockchain and new privacy-enhancing technologies, in which data control is assumed jointly by data creators—and data sharing is determined by creators’ willingness to do so rather than the dictates of digital despots.

Studies in National Governance and Emerging Technologies

This book examines how artificial intelligence systems and their applications in security and defence are entangled with governance and policy processes in the EU. Combining concepts and insights from (critical) security studies and science and technology studies, it argues that behind the various AI-related policy initiatives in the EU are particular narratives on security and defence based on European fears of technological innovation and strategic gaps. In this respect, the book casts light on how such beliefs have become increasingly instrumentalized in the European governance dynamics, and subsequently embedded in successive policy initiatives and security and defence research programmes. It challenges conventional understandings of AI technologies as mere security and defence-enabling instruments, by providing a conceptually driven analysis of how certain visions of AI help govern and control one of the most dynamic emergent socio-technical fields. The book will appeal to all those interested in artificial intelligence, security studies, technology and European governance.

Raluca Csernatoni is a Research Fellow at Carnegie Europe, where she works on the nexus between European defence and emerging technologies. She is also Guest Professor at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, and Visiting Faculty in the Department of International Relations, Central European University, Austria.

Artificial Security and the Politics of Hype in the EU

Cybersecurity has become a contractual issue, yet many legal professionals are expected to deal with it without a technical background. Cybersecurity Contracts Essentials provides the essential knowledge needed to understand the foundations of the field, interpret technical issues and assess their legal and commercial consequences. Covering software security, identity management, communications, security testing and managed security services, it explains how cybersecurity obligations, risks and responsibilities are translated into contracts. Written for lawyers and other legal professionals, the book offers a practical basis from which readers can develop their own informed understanding of cybersecurity and work more confidently with technical specialists, suppliers and clients. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Cyber Law online service.
