An urgent and clear-eyed look at the battle over reproductive control in our tipping-point moment—and how to forge a path forward. Birth control, which includes contraception, abortion access and more, has not only enabled women to enter civic life in significant numbers for the first time, but it has also expanded our democracy and grown our economy. While many embrace these changes, which aim to share the nation’s economic bounty among all Americans, those who see themselves as benefiting from the old hierarchies do not. They resist this progress with divisive rhetoric condemning “woke”-ness in anything they find threatening. In The Real Domestic Product, fertility researcher Elizabeth Gregory argues that our battles over abortion and LGBTQ bans and pronatalism are economic at base—that conservatives seek to push women out of civic life through forced childbearing. Their goal? To maintain their discount on domestic labor and a steady supply of low-wage workers. With the promise of greater efficiency and effectiveness, public authorities have increasingly turned to algorithmic systems to regulate and govern society. In Algorithmic Rule By Law, Nathalie Smuha examines this reliance on algorithmic regulation and shows how it can erode the rule of law. Drawing on extensive research and examples, Smuha argues that outsourcing important administrative decisions to algorithmic systems undermines core principles of democracy. Smuha further demonstrates that this risk is far from hypothetical or one that can be relegated to authoritarian regimes, as many of her examples are drawn from public authorities in liberal democracies that are already making use of algorithmic regulation. Increasingly, corporate executives find themselves called upon to atone for their predecessors’ moral transgressions. While many are prepared to address inherited failed product lines or dysfunctional teams, few know how to handle demands that their enterprise address legacies of mass atrocity such as slavery, genocide, or colonialism. In Corporate Reckoning, Sarah Federman provides a corporate atonement model for corporate leaders and employees across industries around the world. When survivors and descendants demand reckoning, many corporate leaders initially shirk the responsibilities that follow from these requests. They may claim that history belongs to the historians, that their company’s activities were legal at the time, or that too much time has passed. If it comes to it, courts will rule in their favor, they reassure themselves. Others avoid these issues simply because they have no idea how to address them. Demands for reckoning ebb and flow, but these histories do not disappear. This book offers a way forward that serves companies and those affected by these historical harms. Taking responsibility for irreparable harm is not easy or comfortable. Despite the dilemmas and difficulties, the only way out is through.

Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Issues, Concerns and Prospects

This book presents the results of a Hong Kong study that focused on refugees’ contributions, and potential, to support green urban development. It describes education about sustainability principles in non-formal skills development settings, and the benefits of this learning for refugees.

International studies highlight the importance of skills development for disadvantaged groups so they can effectively integrate into accepting societies. However, developing green skills that can help refugees engage in sustainability efforts in new settlements is new and proved successful in our Hong Kong study.

Theoretical and practical angles are used to explore the topic and emphasize the importance of a transformative design for skills development programs for disadvantaged groups as an educational response towards challenges of sustainable urban development. The book discusses the interplay between opportunity structures, agency, and the gendered experience and outlines the results of skills training on three levels – personal, community and society. This book applies a novel approach in searching for a positive view on refugees and their role in society.

The book also highlights social entrepreneurship and its impact on the personal and community levels, following skills training, in terms of behavioural change and participation in society’s sustainability efforts. Researchers, field workers at NGOs working with refugees, TVET practitioners and policymakers can benefit from this book as it includes recommendations for policy change.

From the rise of China as a technological superpower, to wars on its eastern borders, to the belief that the US is no longer a reliable ally, the European Commission sees the world as more unstable than at any other time in recent history. As such, the Commission has become the Geopolitical Commission, working to serve the interests of the Geopolitical Union. Central to many of these conflicts is technology - who produces it, where it is produced, and who controls it. These questions are central to the Commission's pursuit of digital/technological sovereignty, Europe's attempt to regain control of technology regulation. Focusing on topics such as setting technological standards, ensuring access to microchips, reining in online platforms, and securing rules for industrial data and AI, this book explores the EU's approach to lawmaking in this field; increased regulatory oversight and promotion of industrial policy at home, while exporting its rules abroad.

Europe's Attempt to Take Back Control of Technology Regulation

Why socially responsible investment promises to make investors richer and the world better—but fails at both. Wall Street thrives by telling investors that clever financial strategies can reverse the trade-off between corporate profits and social progress. But the link between greater corporate social responsibility and improved financial performance is an illusion. Profit vs. Progress dissects the massive $30 trillion “socially responsible” or “sustainable” finance industry—and finds the emperor has no clothes. At best, sustainable investing typically delivers average rates of financial and social returns. But it makes social and environmental crises harder to overcome, by using financial gimmickry to distract our attention from real solutions. Author Brad Swanson argues that corporations in competitive markets act without moral values, and ethical investment can’t prod them to take greater social responsibility. The only way to change the outcome of the game is to change the rules. The solutions will have to come from legislatures, not corporate boardrooms. Swanson calls for public policies to make businesses better serve all of society, not just their shareholders—without blunting their edge. His recommendations include breaking up the cartel of large asset managers, rebuilding the influence of organized labor, curbing the rapacious behavior of the private equity industry, and eliminating the conflict of interest that pits corporate directors against the greater good of the community. The author shows that in previous eras of social crisis caused by corporate excess, meaningful reforms emerged through the political process. Today as well, the path forward is clear—if we have the will to follow it.
