Crimes of the Powerful

Making state crime visible through acts of documentation, resistance and memory has become one of the defining struggles of the digital age. Focusing on Egypt's Mosireen Collective, this book examines how citizens mobilised digital technologies to expose repression during and after the 2011 revolution. Mosireen's videos spread rapidly, countering official propaganda while bearing witness to police brutality, torture, mass killings and the wider machinery of state violence, including judicial abuse. Their project, 858: An Archive of Resistance, launched in 2018, endures as one of the most extensive collections of revolutionary footage worldwide.Through Mosireen's practice, this book shows how civil society responds when states commit crimes with impunity. It demonstrates how digital archives can function as counter-forensic tools: making violence visible, preserving memory and sustaining resistance even in the face of authoritarian resurgence. Originally published in 1968, this book was an important contribution both to the economics of the public sector and to the study of comparative economic systems and remains of historical interest. In contrast to many expenditure specialists who deal primarily with aggregated data, the author presents a combination of a theoretical and statistical analysis of a number of individual public expenditures. This enables him to take advantage of the special properties of each expenditure. Hiermit wird der sich gleichsam schrittweise vollziehende Ubergang von einem traditionell standischen oder gar furstlich-absolutistischen zu einem zumeist monarchisch-konstitutionellen System aufgearbeitet, dessen jaher Untergang schlielich in die nationalstaatlich-republikanisch gepragte demokratisch-parlamentarische Staatsform Weimars mundet. Mit dem Gesamtwerk steht dem Fachpublikum eine leicht zugangliche, bislang nicht gekannte Fulle von Dokumenten zur Verfugung, die fur die verfassungsrechtliche Entwicklung Deutschlands und seiner einzelnen Staaten von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Dabei wird groer Wert auf die authentische, d. h. buchstaben- und zeichengetreue Ubernahme der Texte gelegt. Dem jeweiligen Dokumententeil sind in jedem Band "Historische Einfuhrungen" vorangestellt. Part 1 discusses demand management, the balance of payments and regional development before 1961. The authors stress the social and administrative aspects of Britain's mal du siècle. A turning point came in 1961 when the Conservatives set up the National Economic Development Council. This experiment in 'indicative planning' and the changes introduced by Labour after 1964 are described in Part 2. Despite short-term demand mismanagement by successive governments, 'indicative planning' has made it possible to introduce a number of constructive new measures, in particular prices and incomes policy, regional development and the modernization of economic structures to each of which the book devotes a chapter.

The 'New' International Law

in 1988, Birth Control in Germany deals in detail with the dissemination and acceptance of ideas of birth control from 1871 -1933 and shows the variety of methods that were in use-condoms, pessaries, diaphragms, caps and most notably abortion. In common with many western societies, Germany experienced a notable decline in the birth rate as it entered into the 20th century. Demographers differ in their explanation for such changes in the birth rate. Some argue that fluctuating birth rates reflect society's efforts to match population and economy, while others argue that modern low levels can only be the result of radical innovations in popular behavior. The author argues that the latter can be shown to be the case in the German instance. He further says that attitudes quite similar to those found in liberal circles today were widespread among ordinary men and women in Germany, in contrast to, for example, the pro natalist ideologies dominant in France in the same period. This despite the regional, class and religious differentials which influence the German picture.The book amounts to an important study of the sexual politics of pre-Nazi Germany, and study in modernization of a traditional society.
