Why a world-transforming invention remained an untold story—until now. How did builders shift from the erection of one structure at a time to the mass construction of hundreds of thousands? American Bridge explores a radical reimagining, a new way of building that introduced uniformity and modularity on a global scale while enabling the connectivity essential to the rise of the nation-state. With tales of bygone infrastructure and astonishing images, Gregory Dreicer spans a deep gap in history. He tracks the transnational creative flows that propelled the development of beam, truss, and skeleton frame as industrial essentials, shaped by classical, capitalist, techno-utopian beliefs that still animate engineering and architecture. Evolutionism and nationalism for two centuries have dictated how innovators, their chroniclers, and all of us view materials, structures, and each other. These perspectives determine what we celebrate and who we forget. Dreicer instead prioritizes bridges over borders and evidence over myth. New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of ‘desert greening’, and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless ‘frontier zone’, which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a ‘Hellenised’ western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.

Anna Irene Baka challenges dominant liberal and legalist paradigms in international law by reinterpreting the right of peoples to self-determination through the lenses of Aristotelian philosophy, phenomenology, social psychology, and corrective justice.
Focusing on high-profile postcolonial conflicts in Kosovo, Cyprus, and Palestine, Baka argues that abstract international and constitutional legal doctrines on self-determination fail to account for the lived realities of collective deprivation and historical trauma. Baka offers a compelling critique not only of mainstream theories of self-determination, but also of the shortcomings of critical movements such as Critical Legal Studies. In their place, she advances a renewed ethical and conceptual framework for international law-one grounded in responsibility, rational judgment, and moral engagement. Drawing and building on scholarship around the political significance of theological ideas, it argues that underlying this tendency is a relationship between international law and messianic thinking.

The 'New' International Law

In Zeiten einer vermeintlich wachsenden Kriminalität junger Menschen rücken Altersgrenzen und Erziehungsverhältnisse in den Fokus - so soll z.B. die richtige Erziehung vorbeugend wirken. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes betrachten die Konzepte und Ansprüche gegenüber jugendlicher Devianz und Delinquenz in der sogenannten 'Sattelzeit' (1750-1850).
