Extractive Mediation and the Taming of the Seafloor

With German media theory as its focus, this book situates the work of Friedrich A. Kittler, Wolfgang Ernst, Bernhard Siegert, Markus Krajewski, Sybille Krämer and Geoffrey Winthrop-Young within contemporary legal scholarship. Media theory, and German media theory in particular, has been somewhat neglected in interdisciplinary legal studies. This is surprising given that Cornelia Vismann, a key figure in contemporary legal theory, was also a prominent media theorist. Her influence can be seen in legal scholarship addressing issues such as posthuman law, legal materiality, law and the arts, and law in the Anthropocene. This book provides an informed starting point for developing new approaches to legal scholarship with media theory as its springboard. Bringing together an international range of scholars from across legal studies, media theory, the humanities and the social sciences, the book uses media theory to present historical as well as contemporary analyses of law's cultural technologies. It covers the historical materiality of legal practices; how legal spaces, bodily presence and performance shape legal experiences; and the transformation of law through automation and technology.

Critical Cultural Communication

Charts the evolution of the TV from a broadcast-only receiver to the internet age How did the television set, once a simple broadcast receiver, become a connected, app-enabled platform? In Smart TV: Devices, Platforms, Markets, Ramon Lobato provides a definitive account of this transformation, charting the evolution of television hardware and software in the internet age. As the TV evolves from a "lean‑back" appliance to an algorithmically curated marketplace, Lobato traces the technologies, institutions, and cultural practices that have fundamentally reconfigured the medium. Using a critical media‑industries perspective, Lobato explains how the smart TV was conceived, designed, and marketed as a new kind of distribution technology. He shows how its software and platforms were engineered to nudge, monitor and quantify our viewing choices. This shift has reconfigured power relations among manufacturers, users, content providers, and platform operators, and has allowed consumer electronics giants like Samsung, LG and TCL to become powerful gatekeepers in television's new attention economy. Unpacking the business arrangements of the platform age, Smart TV explains how new advertising formats and data‑tracking practices have emerged in the wake of this digital transition. Weaving together trade sources, policy analysis, device testing and audience research, Lobato offers a multi‑perspectival analysis of a key device reshaping the global digital ecosystem. Essential reading for scholars and industry professionals, this book illuminates the convergent future of television.

From geological maps to photographs and films of snow, ice, clouds, and coral reefs, visual inscriptions mediate the construction and codification of extractive modes of seeing Earth's subterranean depths and aerial heights. Tracing the territorial ambitions of the archipelagic empires of Japan and the United States in the twentieth century, Archives of the Anthropocene explores crucial moments of overlap between the geoscientific history of studying Earth's deep time and the geopolitical history of territorialization, militarization, and extraction in the Pacific and polar regions. By engaging with contemporary critiques of settler colonialism, liberal humanism, and nonhuman labor from the perspective of environmental media studies, Yuriko Furuhata unsettles the universalist narrative of the Anthropocene, calling us to instead imagine an anticolonial and anti-imperial future for the planet.

Reciprocity begins with a simple but unsettling question: why have we come to believe that human beings are naturally self-interested, competitive and acquisitive? This galvanising, perspective-shifting book dismantles the myth of Homo economicus to show us the way towards a world whose realities align with our true selves.Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, evolutionary biology, psychology, economics and social epidemiology, Richard Wilkinson demonstrates that the characteristics which we assume to be our human nature are in fact effects of the market societies we live in. He traces how various systems of exchange have created profoundly different forms of social life throughout the course of history, shaping our behaviours, motivations, and the kinds of people we become. Though it may often feel like it, the avarice and oppressions that defines the twenty-first century are not an unchangeable reality we simply have to live with. The book explains why inequality, status competition and consumerism hold so much power over us and reveals the depths to which these forces are entwined with the ever-rising crises of mental illness, political polarisation and environmental destruction. Rather than asking how we can make individuals behave better, it makes a compelling case for restructuring our societies to make life happier, meaningful and more fulfilling for one and all.Rigorously researched, bracingly practical and full of passion and hope in equal measure, Reciprocity offers a bold reinterpretation of the world we live in. It equips us with the necessary tools to look beyond and remake it in our very own, amiably human image.

Performing Celebrity

Lorraine York's Unseemly: The Invention of the Fame-Hungry Celebrity Woman explores the history of fame-shaming, the queasy sense that women who openly pursue public recognition (or are thought to do so) transgress the bounds of good taste and propriety. York analyzes fame-hunger accusations that have been directed at women from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, from Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn, Barbara Strozzi, Eliza Haywood, and Sarah Bernhardt to Helen Frankenthaler, Yoko Ono, Madonna, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. York contends that the uneasiness about women desiring fame is informed by social expectations regarding gender, sexuality, race, and class, and is a reaction to women taking up emergent media and using them well, whether the medium is print, film, secular song, natural philosophy, science fiction, amatory fiction, reality television, political speech, or social media. In vivid contrast to the frequent assumption that fame hunger is the last refuge of the untalented, women who have been accused of an unseemly thirst for celebrity turn out to be especially adept at cutting-edge forms of cultural expression.

Framing the Global

Reimagining China explores the lives and cultural imaginations of China's millennials and Generation Z, those born from the mid-1980s to the turn of the millennium amid unprecedented social transformations in both China and the world. Confronted with intensifying geopolitical rivalry, economic uncertainty, the COVID-19 pandemic, and shifting cultural values, Chinese youth navigate through competing visions of identity, belonging, and national destiny. Through their aspirations, disillusionment, resistance, and resilience, this book reveals how young Chinese are reimagining both themselves and a rapidly changing nation. Grounded in European youth studies and informed by the British Cultural Studies tradition, author Wendy Su identifies and investigates five key themes that define contemporary Chinese youth cultures and subcultures in a post-pandemic era: youth popular nationalism, youth idealism, lying flat-ism and nonviolent resistance, fan culture, and global imagination through the reception of Western and Eastern screen culture. These thematic focal points capture the diverse and often contradictory responses of Chinese youth to the rapidly shifting sociopolitical landscape. Additionally, Su critically examines the evolving relationship between the state and youth, paying particular attention to how young people navigate and negotiate the dual forces shaping their cultural expressions and identities, namely, state authority and market capitalism. By focusing on the cultural practices, experiences, and expressions of young Chinese people, Reimagining China explores the search for collective identity amid conflicting discourses of national and global development and suggests the contours of a viable, pluralistic modernity rooted in shared Asian values and post-Western global imaginaries.

Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year Award How 1,000 years of global history show why technological and economic progress is often followed by stagnation and even collapse In How Progress Ends, Carl Benedikt Frey challenges the conventional belief that economic and technological progress is inevitable. For most of human history, stagnation was the norm, and even today progress and prosperity in the world's largest, most advanced economies--the United States and China--have fallen short of expectations. To appreciate why we cannot depend on any AI-fueled great leap forward, Frey offers a remarkable and fascinating journey across the globe, spanning the past 1,000 years, to explain why some societies flourish and others fail in the wake of rapid technological change. By examining key historical moments--from the rise of the steam engine to the dawn of AI--Frey shows why technological shifts have shaped, and sometimes destabilized, entire civilizations. He explores why some leading technological powers of the past--such as Song China, the Dutch Republic, and Victorian Britain--ultimately lost their innovative edge, why some modern nations such as Japan had periods of rapid growth followed by stagnation, and why planned economies like the Soviet Union collapsed after brief surges of progress. Frey uncovers a recurring tension in history: while decentralization fosters the exploration of new technologies, bureaucracy is crucial for scaling them. When institutions fail to adapt to technological change, stagnation inevitably follows. Only by carefully balancing decentralization and bureaucracy can nations innovate and grow over the long term--findings that have worrying implications for the United States, Europe, China, and other economies today. Through a rich narrative that weaves together history, economics, and technology, How Progress Ends reveals that managing the future requires us to draw the right lessons from the past.

Capitalism is the most powerful, creative and destructive social system the world has ever seen. Vigorously celebrated and fiercely contested, it provides the backdrop for the pipelines and platforms that supply audiences with entertainment, information and connection. This book provides an accessible introduction to the key characteristics of capitalism and illustrates how they shape and distort our media and communications landscapes. Exploring concepts including accumulation, exploitation, ideology, oppression, commodification and colonization, the book discusses the impact of these processes on everything from our experiences online and the dynamics of algorithms to the power of oligarchs and the media's role in the escalating environmental crisis. At a time when technology is often heralded as either the cause or the solution to issues of polarization, disinformation and atomization, an understanding of the simultaneous resilience and fragility of capitalism is essential. Capitalism and the Media is important reading for students of media, communications, cultural studies and politics and provides a valuable resource for scholars and activists.

Part life philosophy, part financial clarity, and part real-world wisdom from a hugely popular estate planning attorney who has seen what happens when families plan and when they don't. I'm Sorry I'm Dead helps readers confront the reality of life's end, not in a morbid way, but in a deeply empowering one. Estate planning attorney, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Pamela Maass Garrett aka Law Mother has helped thousands of families navigate what happens when someone dies. She has seen firsthand that the biggest problems families face are rarely legal: they are emotional, relational, and the result of decisions never made . . . siblings that stop speaking over a dispute about their parent's home, a grieving widow locked out of bank accounts because she didn't know how to get access, and families forced to guess about critical medical decisions. All of these problems can be easily avoided. In this book, Garrett introduces a powerful mindset shift: when you face the end of life honestly, you begin living more intentionally today. Through compelling stories from real families, practical financial insights, and simple decision-making frameworks, readers learn how to take control of their lives before circumstances take control of them. The book guides readers through the most important life decisions most people avoid: · how to organize finances and build real wealth · how to protect loved ones legally and emotionally · how to make difficult family decisions before crisis strikes · how to prevent conflict, confusion, and regret after death · how to create a legacy that strengthens future generations rather than unintentionally burdening them with a huge tax bill · what you really can and can't do Rather than overwhelming readers with technical legal details, I'm Sorry I'm Dead offers a clear philosophy and practical tools for making the decisions that matter most. The result is a life lived with greater clarity, stronger relationships, and the peace of knowing the people you love will be protected. This book is for anyone who wants to stop drifting through life and start deciding it.

Estate Planning to Protect the People You Love and Leave Behind More Than Money

This insider account traces how wartime journalists covered Nazi crimes at Nuremberg, including live executions and courtroom technology. For the first time, journalists who shared details about Nazi crimes from the International Military Tribunal, better known as the Nuremberg Trial, have their own story told. As World War II in Europe drew to a close in 1945, the Allies prepared to hold Nazi leaders accountable for crimes against humanity and selected Nuremberg as the site for the trial. The U.S. military took the lead in refurbishing a courtroom and making accommodations for 325 journalists and 23 defendants plus Allied judges, prosecutors, translators and administrative staff. Because publicity was a main consideration, the latest innovations and technology were incorporated into the courtroom to enhance news coverage of the trial. Press passes were in demand worldwide for courtroom seats. A press pool was selected to witness the executions in which 10 criminals were hung on Oct. 16, 1946. Famous war correspondents and young journalists who later became household names were headquartered in a castle, explored bombed ruins and faced dangers as a lingering spirit of Nazism seethed within the city. The lengthy trial became an excruciating endurance test for journalists by the time it ended (far longer than expected) on Oct. 1, 1946, setting a precedent for coverage of subsequent justice at Nuremberg. The author, a long-time journalist and former foreign correspondent, provides an insider's look at how the news was gathered and conveyed. The book is based on extensive research and insights gathered from Nuremberg, including at the location where the journalists were housed and at the courtroom itself.
