The book explores the concept of counter-narratives to terrorism within the context of Pakistan’s unique socio-political, cultural, and historical experiences. It provides actionable insights to combat extremism, focusing on the role of ideology, socio-economic reforms, and community engagement in reducing radicalization.
As a frontline state in the global War on Terror, Pakistan deals with the rise of terrorist groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and their shocking use of suicide terrorism. Despite military achievements, enduring peace remains elusive due to ideological and social origins of extremism. This book addresses the pressing necessity for counter-narratives—intellectual, cultural, and strategic outlines to challenge extremist ideologies and promote peace within and beyond the borders.
Munir Ahmad Zia Rao serves as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Training), Punjab, Pakistan. Over the past twenty-five years, he has worked across operational and strategic policing domains, including counter-terrorism, criminal intelligence, and policy development. He has served with Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA),&nbsp;Additional Director Anti Money Laundering Unit&nbsp; (FIA), and provincial police Training Directorate, contributing to policy development, law enforcement, national security, and community resilience initiatives. Dr. Rao holds a Ph.D. in Terrorism Studies and is recognized for his pioneering field research on suicide terrorism, including extensive interviews with failed suicide bombers and former militants. His academic work bridges empirical inquiry with critical theory, engaging with themes such as biopolitics, necropolitics, radical ideology, and de-radicalization. Beyond policing, he serves as a researcher, trainer, and policy advisor in the domains of counter-extremism, digital radicalization, and the development of sustainable peace narratives in South Asia.

This book identifies an emerging Brazilian cultural criminology which combines Brazilian and Latin American critical criminology with the new avenues of investigation and methodologies that characterize cultural criminology more broadly. Bringing together various perspectives, it offers a new take on cultural criminology which demonstrates its international scope and innovative approaches to explore the specific problems of Brazil’s peripheral reality. It offers a window into past and present Brazil, discussing themes of colonialism, slavery, genocide, eugenics, police lethality, mass imprisonment, urban groups, Bolsonarism, youth gangs, mediated representation, and the pandemic.
The joint work of criminologists from Brazil constitutes a new facet of Brazilian critical criminology and a new facet of cultural criminology itself. Bound by their common political identity, these fields continue to develop and spiral together, challenging accepted notions of locality and reinventing academic and everyday forms of resistance in different arenas of the Global South and Global North. 
This book demonstrates that the reception and incorporation of methodologies and ideas from cultural criminology into Brazilian critical criminology do not reveal a simple reproduction, but rather that Brazilian criminologists continue to reinvent and contest, from the margins, the very cultural criminology of the Global North from which they were inspired to refine and expand the accumulated critical knowledge positioned against administrative criminology.

Critical Criminological Perspectives

This book considers the lessons that can be gleaned from the Occupy movement, some 14 years after its inception. The Occupy movement brought with it many things, including a renewed interest in class and class struggle. Using the work of Nicos Poulantzas as its departure point, the book considers the theoretical and conceptual parameters of class structures under the most contemporary form of capitalism: the monopoly finance capitalist stage. An examination of state responses to the Occupy movement reveals the ability of the exploiting classes to maintain and reproduce the capitalist system via an expression of political power through the state and its tendency to deploy both ideological and physical defenses against any significant attacks on capitalism. The analysis offered reveals how some degree of anti-capitalist opposition is tolerated until such time that it must be forcefully censored and stopped, coined here as ‘the authoritarian state with a democratic alter-ego’, offering a nuanced conceptualization of state power for readers to explore and apply for themselves in other contexts. For the nature of the state to change significantly, social class agents need to find ways to access greater autonomy from the shackles of its power. This book explores the ways in which attempts to take up counterhegemonic class positions are persistently thwarted by a pervasive and yet intricately configured state power, backed by profit motivated corporate interest. It also poses urgent questions about the role and nature of alliances when trying to challenge both ideological and forcefully repressive state practices under capitalism. The book considers how we ‘find each other’ again in future struggles against capitalism and the attendant harms that it produces for the whole of humanity and the planet.
