Confessions of a Cafeteria Catholic

In Italy, anti-Protestantism became a significant theme in reactionary polemics during the Risorgimento and the post-unification period of the 19th century. Although it waned around 1900, the anti-Protestant offensive resumed after the First World War. Between the early 1920s and the mid-1950s, the Catholic Church's hostility toward the Protestant presence and mission in Italy developed into a significant social and political phenomenon. It succeeded in influencing both the attitude of the Italian state and the legislation on religious freedom. Reconstructing Catholic anti-Protestantism, Paolo Zanini shows that attitudes toward Protestant denominations were among the elements of continuity between Fascism and the first decade of the post-war Republic.

The "Protestant Peril"

In The Art of Christian Advocacy, Dr. John Warwick Montgomery and Craig Parton explain that the art of advocacy and persuasion, when tied to the "many convincing proofs" (Acts 1:3) of the factual resurrection of Jesus Christ, is deeply Biblical and is best seen as "logic supplemented" and not "logic supplanted." In spite of the generally negative public image of lawyers in our day, this characterization is usually a high compliment: It suggests clarity and precision of thought well above the average, coupled with a particular persuasive ability not shared by those outside the legal profession. In this book, we shall examine the reasoning process in general, together with those special styles of reasoning and presentation that lawyers and judges employ professionally to get to the truth in the best of cases. This book combines the "is" and the "ought" we wish to offer a clear description of legal reasoning and also provide some normative guidelines to assist in the improvement of your reasoning faculties.

The Art of Christian Advocacy

It is well known that the Chinese church (and therefore Chinese theology) has been divided in the People's Republic of China into "registered" and "unregistered" churches, and that while the state-approved church offers theologies that align with the nation's socialist values, the unregistered or house churches have tended toward an evangelical theology that is now divaricating with the resurgence of denominations in China. What is less well known is that there has been a vibrant third field of Chinese theology: Sino-Christian theology, a contested, academic discourse that makes no claims to be a confessional theology. This theology, fostered by academics in secular Chinese universities, developed in the 1990s and has grown and diversified with the increasing number of scholars researching Christianity in China. This volume offers essays on the message of Chinese Christian art, for example, alongside textual and Christological studies. The phenomenon of Sino-Christian theology, along with debates on its right to exist (if not authored by professing Christians), overlaps with broader debates on the nature of a "Chinese theology" and its unifying features. The second part of the volume draws together nine essays on theological concerns in the Chinese diaspora. These range from the nature of diasporic experience itself to studies of individual writers, and from fundamentalist beliefs in Singapore to a queer theology academy in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong is part of mainland China, given its history and the "one country, two systems" policy still in place, several essays on Hong Kong theologians are included here among diasporic writings. Three essays focusing on Taiwanese subjects include reflections on the role of Christian philosophy in the legal thought of John C. H. Wu, a reassessment of homeland theology in light of the nationalist resurgence, and the creative "theology of Yi" based on the Book of Changes, Yijing.

In 2002, Sant Egidio established the DREAM (Drug Resource Enhancement Against AIDS and Malnutrition) project, a community-based approach to the AIDS crisis, rooted in medicine, epidemiology, and public health, that has proven effective in ten countries where it has been implemented-and has emerged as a model for healthcare in the global South.

The majority of Christians in China over the course of the last century have worshipped not in missionary-founded churches or in congregations affiliated with the contemporary Three-Self Patriotic Movement or Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, but in independent and unregistered churches, often labeled "house churches." From the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements within the mission-church landscape of the early twentieth century, to the Calvinist Reformed movement in the present-day Protestant church, the vibrant faith life and extraordinary church growth of this sector of Chinese Christianity offer a fascinating witness and lesson to the world church. Yet despite the size of their congregations and the spread of their teachings, the theologies of these independent and unregistered churches have drawn much less academic attention than those of mission-church or "state church" theologians. This volume presents a selection of new studies on "house church" theologians and theologies. These begin in the early twentieth century with studies of the Spiritual Gifts movement in Shandong and the nature of Pentecostalism in Hong Kong, and arrive in the present with essays on the changing role of women's leadership in the church, given the spread of Reformed thought and the theological implications of Westminsterian Neo-Calvinism in China. The second section of the volume is devoted to the theological writings and lives of the two most prominent independent church figures of the twentieth century: Wang Mingdao and Ni Tuosheng (Watchman Nee). These chapters include studies of spiritual theology; of Ni's doctrine of humanity, his views on salvation, and his prison letters; and of Wang Mingdao's life and moral thought, his Confucian beliefs, and his understanding of the relationship of Christians to the state.
