The law codes in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are a well-crafted blend of civil and Islamic law in which civil law principles do not violate Islamic provisions. Yet, common law principles derived either from English common law or Islamic customary usages remain unidentified and thus ignored. Here, this complex scenario is rectified through a comparative analysis of the primary data (e.g. cases, statutes and arbitral award decisions), adding common law and uncodified Islamic custom to MENA law codes. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to allow common legal principles found in civil, common and Islamic law to be distilled in order to create a new, harmonised international commercial arbitration law code (HICALC) or uniform Arab arbitration law (UAAL) for adoption in the MENA region, where these principles already greatly influence the legal systems and can be readily assimilated into a harmonised or uniform code. The work demonstrates that this new code would lead to improved arbitral award enforcement in the MENA.

A Model Harmonised International Arbitration Law Code for the Middle East and North Africa

A fresh interpretation of the Enlightenment that reshapes our understanding of political economy and its intellectual foundations. The origins of political economy are often told as a story of increasing certainty, rationality, and scientific progress. But what if its earliest thinkers were instead preoccupied with uncertainty? In Doubtful Knowledge, Richard Adelman offers a striking new interpretation of eighteenth-century political economy by tracing its roots to the skeptical philosophy of the European Enlightenment.Moving between Scotland and France, Adelman reveals how figures including David Hume, Adam Smith, Denis Diderot, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, François Quesnay, and the Physiocrats developed a shared understanding of the limits of human knowledge. Rather than presenting markets or societies as systems that could be fully understood or controlled, they emphasized the complexity of the social world, the fallibility of human judgment, and the need for intellectual humility. Through close readings of major philosophical and political-economic texts, Adelman demonstrates that skepticism was not peripheral to early political economy but fundamental to its emergence. Challenging long-held assumptions about the history of economics and Enlightenment thought, Doubtful Knowledge reframes debates about commerce, governance, progress, and human nature.By bringing together intellectual history, literary studies, philosophy, and the history of political economy, Adelman offers a compelling account of how eighteenth-century thinkers understood knowledge itself--and why their questions remain relevant to contemporary discussions about economics, politics, and the limits of expertise.

New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. The book is interesting for researchers in the field, especially for those who are concerned with the food system that has been changed dynamically in the past two decades, and it is informative, as well, for practitioners who are engaged in related business.

Studies in National Governance and Emerging Technologies

This book examines how artificial intelligence systems and their applications in security and defence are entangled with governance and policy processes in the EU. Combining concepts and insights from (critical) security studies and science and technology studies, it argues that behind the various AI-related policy initiatives in the EU are particular narratives on security and defence based on European fears of technological innovation and strategic gaps. In this respect, the book casts light on how such beliefs have become increasingly instrumentalized in the European governance dynamics, and subsequently embedded in successive policy initiatives and security and defence research programmes. It challenges conventional understandings of AI technologies as mere security and defence-enabling instruments, by providing a conceptually driven analysis of how certain visions of AI help govern and control one of the most dynamic emergent socio-technical fields. The book will appeal to all those interested in artificial intelligence, security studies, technology and European governance.

The Blue Economy in African Coastal Communities, Volume II

This is a clear, compelling guide to improving racial literacy in schools and communities, demonstrating how making that investment can transform our education system. Exploring the ability to understand race, racism and anti-racism as an effective tool for recognising and challenging racism, educators and learners will find opportunities to develop their racial literacy through a range of practical activities. These form part of an ongoing journey of learning, using the impact of De Montfort University's Stephen Lawrence Research Centre. This specific, focused approach places the book's advice and ideas - from decolonising the curriculum and anti-racist educator training to student ambassadors and open dialogue - squarely within the historical context of race and education in the UK. By working through the nuance of racial consciousness and towards a fair and equitable society it stands as a productive counterpoint to the conventional wisdom of how to 'solve' racism. This is essential reading for anyone committed to achieving social justice and racial equity in our education system.

K Is for Kidlit

This is the essential practitioner's guide to animal welfare and animal protection law in the Crown Court and magistrates' courts of England. Animal law is a roughly stitched patchwork of domestic acts, regulations, orders and statutory codes, interlaced with international treaties, regulations and directives. The resultant body of law is immense: with acts still in force today dating back to the 1800s and dozens of enabling clauses permitting the tapestry constantly to evolve. Sometimes prosecutors use the law to protect animals, for instance by prosecuting those thought to have abused them. Other times defence advocates are those protecting animals, for instance by defending allegedly dangerous dogs from destruction. This guide sets out the law and provides practical advice for those on either side of the courtroom. The guide's primary focus is on criminal cases that concern kept animals, farmed animals, animals in science, wild animals, dangerous dogs and animal protection activists. It also features chapters on related civil orders in the magistrates' courts, as well as a practical chapter on funding in animal-related cases. This is the only guide of its kind, written as a handbook for frontline practitioners in England's criminal courts. It draws on decades of experience and is written by two experts, in consultation with an array of specialists in each practice area. This makes it a must-have book for anyone practising or wishing to practise animal welfare or animal protection law.

Animal Welfare and Animal Protection Law - A Practitioner’s Guide

This book delves deep into the complex, ethically fraught topic of proofreading of student writing by exploring a variety of perspectives on proofreading interventions in student texts. It gives voice to a range of ethical perspectives, from those who are deeply troubled by proofreading of student writing to those who take a more permissive stance and those whose confusion lands them somewhere in between. As the first book-length work on this topic, it makes a necessary contribution to research on proofreading of student work.

Routledge Studies in the Modern World Economy

The 1997 Asian Crisis and 9/11 were turning points for the world economy. The two events reminded the Western World of the dynamic impacts of globalisation and the increased uncertainty the world was facing. This book examines the threats to the world economy arising in the wake of the tragedy of 11th September 2001 and the preceding Asian financial crisis of 1997. The author makes the point that a distinctive '1990s-type' global capitalist system was the victim of these attacks, so that an appreciation of the peculiarities of this system is essential to an examination of the specific threats that it is likely to face in future and the policy measures necessary to deal with them. As an international relations specialist working for a Japanese trade organization both in Britain and Japan itself, the author has a somewhat uniquely privileged vantage point from which to observe, analyze and evaluate the future tendencies and dangers of the new global system. The book cuts across economics and politics and as such will be of use to a wide audience within both of these disciplines.
