Jazz als Musik im Gottesdienst, Jazzgottesdienste und religiös inspirierter Jazz als Kirchenmusik - all dies sind inzwischen etablierte Spielfelder wie sich Jazz und Kirche begegnen und einander inspirieren. Die Wurzeln des Jazz in Spirituals und Gospels sowie im Blues und Rhythm’n’Blues und seine heutige Verwurzelung in allen Weltmusikkulturen bringen Jazzkonzert und Ritual regelmäßig auch auf der Konzertbühne eng zusammen.In Anerkennung all dessen fragten Musiker*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen auf einer Tagung (samt Festival) des internationalen Blue Church-Netzwerkes weiter nach einer spezifischen "Spiritualität des Jazz":<ul><li>Welche Kernelemente des Jazz als Konzertmusik wirken rituell oder spirituell?</li><li>Welche Schnittmengen gibt es zwischen diesen Elementen und religiöser Praxis?</li><li>Aus welchen spirituellen Quellen (oft weit interreligiös ausgreifend) schöpfen Musiker*innen?</li><li>Welche spirituellen Erfahrungen verbinden Rezipient*innen mit Jazzkonzerten und dem Hören von Jazzmusik?</li><li>Welche Wahrnehmungen, Chancen und Herausforderungen können hier auch für die kirchliche Praxis produktiv wirken?</li></ul>Elemente des Festivals und die&nbsp;Tagungsbeiträge &nbsp;sind in diesem Band dokumentiert, erweitert um Beiträge internationaler Jazzforscher.Die Herausgeber Prof. Dr. Gotthard Fermor ist Professor für Kirchliche Bildungsarbeit an der Ev. Hochschule Bochum und Dozent für Gemeindepädagogik am Pädagogisch-Theologischen Institut der EKiR.Dr. Uwe Steinmetz ist Jazzmusiker und Dekanatskantor in der evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche in Bayern.

The Year the World Forgot

Timothy Dodge explores African American interest in and participation in country music dates from the earliest days of the recording industry's racial segregation of vernacular music into African American "race" and white "hillbilly" music. Ray Charles's then-controversial decision to record an entire album of country music covers in 1962 turned out to be a major success that, in effect, made it "legitimate" for African Americans to record country music. However, the author's intensive research reveals that African Americans had been recording such music as far back as the early 1920s. Previous scholarship has focused on the important influence of African American popular music, especially the blues, on country music. This study investigates the prevalence of country music first recorded by white artists subsequently recorded by African Americans artists from several musical genres including blues, R &amp;B, gospel, jazz, and pop. The author analyzes and discusses his findings to confirm that African American interest in and participation in country has been part of the music's history from the beginning despite the segregation of such vernacular music by the early recording industry into the basic racial categories of "race" and "hillbilly," the influence of which to some extent continues to inform contemporary 21st.-century understandings of country music.

Blanco, who came of age first in the Pacific Northwest and then as a 16-year-old runaway in New York City, refers in these poems as much to their own experience of life as to the more far-reaching worlds of mysticism, metaphysics and psychedelia. From the Silence of Duchamp is arranged and illustrated by Nikolai Rose, the New York-based creative team of Jacob Melinger and Alan Paukman, who experimented with wine and salt crystals to create the haunting ink washes that accompany Blanco's visceral words. Michael David Quattlebaum Jr. (born 1986), better known by the stage name Mykki Blanco, is a songwriter, musician, performance artist, poet and activist.

In the early twenty-first century we are inundated with technologies and discourses that privilege the apparently liberating immaterial aspects of digital culture. Despite, or perhaps because, of this, the making of material objects continues to be of importance in people's everyday lives.
