Feline Enchantment and the Making of the Modern World

This book critically examines the development and operation of administrative justice in the UK. Everyday, people have millions of interactions with government and public services. Administrative justice is concerned with the fairness of these interactions and the redress mechanisms people can use when things go wrong. Administrative justice is a large and expanding part of the legal system and of governmental activity in the United Kingdom. It includes initial administrative decision-making, the delivery of public services as well as redress and scrutiny mechanisms, principally tribunals, complaint-handling and ombudsmen. Administrative justice encompasses a far greater number of decisions than the caseloads of the courts. This book explores what administrative justice is, why it is important, how it has evolved, how it works in practice and how it could be improved. Combining theoretical and empirical analysis, the book examines various contexts in which administrative justice operates, including benefits and special educational needs and disability. It also examines the social and political forces that drive the development of administrative justice and critically analyses the creation, operation and effectiveness of redress institutions.

This book was originally published in 1981 at a time when mass unemployment had returned to the United Kingdom. Now reissued with a new Preface by the author's literary executor, the essays in this volume discuss in detail the damage that was being done to the community and the economy at national and regional levels as a result of government policy. There are chapters on the political and economic aspects of the problem, on the comparison with the inter-war years, on youth unemployment and on unemployment in each of the regions worst affected. The collection as a whole provides an authoritative overview of a central political issue of the late 20th Century but one which still has resonance today as the post-Covid, post-Brexit UK economy teeters on the edge of recession.

This book looks at how the law allows donors to establish perpetual charitable trusts, bearing the donor's name, and how it rewards and encourages the pursuit of post-mortem identity. It considers the policy questions raised by post-mortem identity. The law in this area is often complex and uncertain, and that legal unpredictably might deter donors from giving. Attention to post-mortem identity suggests that the law should be made as reliable and predictable as possible. This book theorises the motivation for post-mortem identity and works through its legal implications. It considers the even deeper questions in play and the particular problems which surround post-mortem identity. For example, a donor motivated by the prospect of legal immortality might be led towards bad charity. The donor might try to create a vain or prejudiced organisation. The book looks at the context of these issues, the policy challenges faced by the law, and the way in which the rules need to control and limit the donor's wishes.

The Geography of the Port of London (1957) deals with the mid-century functions of the port studied in relation to their physical setting and in the light of their historical development. An analysis of the roles of the various dock and wharf systems is followed by a discussion of the present commerce of the port, illustrated by post-war statistics. The multiple background to this activity is also presented, including a discussion of the 1950s physical condition of the River Thames and of the markets and industries associated with the port. It presents a comprehensive picture of this at-the-time greatest British seaport, considered with reference to certain principles of economic geography.

Since the end of the Second World War, restitution in Germany - Wiedergutmachung - has been mainly understood as part of state or private law. This book offers a different approach, arguing that authors and artists have also taken up a responsibility for restitution. Deploying the literal translation 'making-good-again', this book focuses on the 'making' of law, literature and visual art to argue that restitution is a practice which is found in different genres, sites and temporalities. The practices of restitution identified are dynamic, iterative and incomplete: they are practices of failure. Nevertheless, in this book, the question of how to conduct restitution emerges as a material question of responsibility asked through the making of texts and objects in different genres, including law. The resulting text is a unique expansion and re-conceptualisation of the practices of jurisprudence, restitution and responsibility in the context of the aftermath in Germany. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.
