A challenge to incentivization as a dominant framework for understanding and governing people From corporate management and consumer behavior to public health and climate policy, incentives are widely treated as a neutral and effective way to shape how people act. In this book, Guus Dix shows that incentives are not simple policy nudges; they lull us into a passive understanding of ourselves as being merely responsive to changes others make to our environment. They foster a politics of incremental tweaks to a socially and ecologically destructive economic system that we are expected to accept without question. Dix argues that it is time to challenge the reign of incentives in contemporary science and public life. Dix traces the evolution of the incentive, from the engineering of performance charts and rewards for factory workers to combating gridlock at Britain’s National Health Service. He describes the function of incentives under socialism, theories of adjustment incentives developed at the Harvard Business School to manage employees, and incentivizing whole economies—both socialist and capitalist. He shows that incentivization is a distinct way of wielding power. Incentives have become part of a quasi-universal governing philosophy that keeps us from addressing such major issues as poverty and the climate crisis. Finally, Dix analyzes the limits of incentivization, arguing that being governed by incentives keeps us from considering government policies that have the potential to bring about meaningful and transformative change.

An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on 4 years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

Discover how to adapt, adopt, and thrive in an AI-anxious era, written by the man with the compass for our maze Expecting the apocalypse around the corner? This book is your playbook to surviving the rise of machine learning. 71% of workers are anxious about AI. The good news: the machines still need you, and you can make them work for you. Don't Panic cuts through the noise, showing you exactly how this technology works and where it fails, and why your human judgment is more valuable than ever. Instead of focusing on technical skills or abstract predictions, author Nate B. Jones ("AI Nate") begins with the emotional reality behind AI anxiety, drawing on his 20-years experience in the tech industry. He's garnered trust from more than 1 million people to help them stay relevant in a rapidly changing technological landscape. AI might have a planet-sized brain, but just like Marvin the Android from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, it’s permanently stuck at factory settings. It can’t learn, it can’t adapt, and it can’t gain wisdom. This book reveals why AI's permanent blind spots make human judgment more valuable today than ever before. Worry less, and start owning your future.

Stop treating the stock market like a casino - discover the proven, stress-free strategy that builds lasting wealth. In The Art of Multiplying Your Money, financial journalist and bestselling author Nicolas Bérubé uses rigorous academic research and real-world historical data to dismantle the myth that successful investing requires picking winning stocks, timing the market, or chasing hot tech trends. Instead, he reveals how anyone can achieve exceptional long-term wealth, whether you have $100 or $100 million to invest. Across 17 engaging lessons, this book answers the most pressing questions investors face today. By the time you've finished this book, you'll know the answers to the following questions: - Will the stock market always keep rising? Crucially, the book focuses on the greatest risk of all: human psychology. By highlighting the cognitive biases that lead investors to panic and sabotage their own portfolios, Bérubé teaches readers how to automate their success, providing a comprehensive roadmap to financial independence.
