Critical Criminological Perspectives

This book explores narratives and practices around gender and criminal justice, with a focus on women in Latin America. The chapters are written by academics, policy-making institutions, women with lived experience and activist actors in Latin America. They provide a distinctive analysis of gender and criminal justice in the region, along with the tensions between victimization and agency in women’s paths of criminalization. This book looks at women’s resistance and responses to States’ processes of gender stereotyping and punishment. Ultimately, it showcases women’s collective capacity to shape the security agenda.
Corina Giacomello is Professor of Sociology of Law at the Institute of Judicial Studies of the Autonomous University of Chiapas, Mexico. She is an academic and international consultant with expertise in gender studies, children’s rights, criminal justice and prison systems and drug policies. She has 20 years of experience in advocacy-oriented research and development of legal, judicial and public policy proposals at the national and international level.

Dieses wissenschaftliche Fachbuch untersucht Entstehung, Strukturen und Handlungsspielräume des Vereins und rekonstruiert seine Rolle innerhalb regionaler und überregionaler Netzwerke. Im Zentrum stehen Akteurinnen, Kommunikationswege und Medienpraktiken - von internen Rundbriefen und Vereinsheften bis zur Beziehung zu zeitgenössischen Initiativen und Verbänden. Die Analyse verbindet mikrohistorische Vereinsgeschichte mit zeithistorischer Kontextualisierung: Entwicklungen im Transsexuellengesetz, medizinische Begutachtungspraxen, AIDS-Krise, neue soziale Bewegungen und mediale Repräsentationen werden als Bedingungen von Mobilisierung und Sichtbarkeit diskutiert. Methodisch basiert das Buch auf Quellenkritik, Archivrecherche und oral history; sie macht zugleich die Grenzen der Überlieferung transparent. So entsteht eine fundierte Darstellung, die Transidentitas nicht als isoliertes Phänomen, sondern als Knotenpunkt eines sich wandelnden Feldes von Selbstorganisation, Wissensproduktion und Politik begreift

This book showcases the work of Annapurna Pariwar, an NGO comprising six organizations, over the past 30 years and its impact on changing the lives of low-income working women with small businesses in the slums of Mumbai and Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This group of six organizations together forms a social enterprise, established at a time of major changes in the Indian economy in the form of globalization and urbanization. The NGO set out to address issues of livelihood and poverty alleviation in slums. Adopting a path that was sustainable and did not depend upon grants, the journey is a fascinating account of learnings in organizational evolution and its impact on the lives of poor women.The book is divided into two parts. The first part has three chapters charting the journey of Annapurna Pariwar based on interviews with Medha Tai, the founder of Annapurna Pariwar. These chapters discuss milestones, organizational evolution, and challenges, especially demonetization and COVID-19. The lifecycle of the organization and of the women in the case studies are juxtaposed within the framework of financial, physical, sociocultural, and political spaces. The second part of the book contains analyses from well-known authors and academics who contextualize the relevance of Annapurna Pariwar’s work and future against microfinance, microinsurance, plus services, social entrepreneurship, digitization, and urban landscapes. The book thus contributes not only to the practice-field; it has several academic contributions as well for researchers studying social phenomena such as social entrepreneurship, microfinance, cooperatives, women empowerment, and women entrepreneurship. While doing so, it addresses SDGs such as SDG3, SDG5, SDG8, and SDG11. The book is for a wide audience, comprising social entrepreneurs in the field of social development, microfinance, and microinsurance. It is of relevance to business schools and educational institutions which offer courses on social entrepreneurship and development studies.

What is the reality of what it is to participate in associations, such as sports clubs, charities, trade unions, or political parties? This book explores the complexities surrounding the right of association from a legal and philosophical perspective. Legal chapters explore how the right is protected in jurisdictions as diverse as Chile, Germany, Indonesia, Kenya, Slovenia, Türkiye and the United Kingdom, alongside thematic chapters on judicial review, associational schism and the lived experience of associational participation. Philosophical chapters employ social ontology to illuminate the nature of group interaction and the reality of associational life. This book examines the long-term dynamics of urban labour market behaviour of women and men over three and a half decades, spanning the period from 1987-88 to 2023-24. It provides a detailed understanding of the topic by incorporating data and information that cover both the supply and demand sides of the labour market. The book distinguishes itself from similar studies by adopting a life-cycle approach for women so as to enable a holistic coverage of various dimensions that hamper or facilitate their economic participation at every stage of life. It examines the gender differences in labour market behaviour and outcomes of young graduate women, married working age women, as well as elderly women. It also undertakes a time-use analysis for understanding the impact of education on gender differences in the distribution of unpaid domestic responsibilities among adolescent girls and boys. Likewise, among the married women fully engaged in household work, the book explores the potential for their integration into the labour force if employment opportunities are accessible at their household. Combining quantitative analysis of secondary datasets with qualitative analysis of primary survey interviews, this study provides an evidence-based depiction of gendered labour market realities and the policy approach to address them. The qualitative approach uses narrative-building to capture the lived experiences of women and men employed in the public transport and sanitation sectors. This book will serve as an important resource for understanding of female labour market by researchers, scholars, policymakers, practitioners, NGOs, and students of gender and labour studies.

This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. This book examines questions about how we should conceptualise and respond to ‘exiting’ and, by centring sex workers’ voices, it provides evidence of the impact of these programs. It examines sex work ‘exiting’, not as something sex workers need to stop doing, but as part of sex work careers. Drawing on interviews and a global program review to establish best practice, this book challenges the idea of sex work as something a person is ‘in’ or ‘out’ of. It also explores sex workers’ resistance to this area of programming to highlight the power and politics of ‘exiting’. Using a labour framing and seeing sex work as career, this book repositions ‘exiting’ as career development and sheds new light on everyday working circumstances, popular discourses, policies and programs and grassroots struggles for change. As a co-collaboration incorporating knowledge from researchers and lived experience experts, this book is a unique addition that challenges the dominant abolitionist, anti-sex work framings and is of interest to academics, policy makers, sex worker support organisations and non-government organisations globally.
