The negative associations we see now with “work” stem from the extreme inequality and exploitation accompanying the rise of the state 5,500 years ago. Consequently, today many people view work negatively, seeing it as a means to gain income to enable consumption as opposed to serving as a means for creativity, community, and self-fulfillment.

 , Jon D. Wisman draws upon economics, philosophy, evolutionary psychology, social anthropology, and history to explore how work has been experienced and understood over the course of history. In addressing current conditions, he notes the absurdity that, while we live with unparalleled abundance, some workers suffer unemployment and most are not free in their workplaces, often being bossed about. Equally absurd, given our abundance, is the extreme inequality that results in pervasive insecurity, stress, and pessimism. Laissez-faire ideology legitimates the public policies that generate this inequality and these work conditions while depicting ever greater consumption as opposed to meaningful work as the means to greater happiness.
 Wisman offers an attractive alternative vision of our future, grounded in two reforms to make work again fulfilling: guaranteed employment and workplace democracy. Guaranteed employment would provide security and eliminate poverty while providing everyone with the social and self-respect of being a productive member of society. Measures to bring about worker ownership and control of their firms would bring freedom and democracy to the workplace. Both reforms conform to cherished values while preserving capitalism’s two principal institutions of private property and markets.&nbsp;Jon D. Wisman
 is Professor of Economics at American University in Washington, DC. He served as President of the Association for Social Economics in 2002, has twice been selected by American University as Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and was named American University’s Scholar/Teacher of the Year in 2023. He was also a recipient of the 2023 Veblen-Commons Award, in recognition of his significant contributions to evolutionary institutional economics.

Modern Studies in European Law

This open access book adds a new dimension to the long-standing research on the co-existence of European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the EU, and their inter-related action and explicit interaction. As the two Courts are increasingly called upon to interpret corresponding rights, particularly owing to the ever-growing importance of fundamental rights in the EU legal order, the stakes intensify. Prior studies have mostly focused on the constitutional and substantive issues connected to this interaction. This book focuses on another dimension: the lesser-told yet fascinating tale of two - increasingly substantively overlapping - European-level judicial systems with their own procedures and institutional idiosyncrasies, their own terminology, and with their own epistemic communities of practitioners and scholars, and their own relationship to national law. In this collection a team of experts - academics and practitioners - from both systems bridges the gap between these two worlds of fundamental and human rights protection, investigating their commonalities and differences. Global Challenges in the Environmental Humanities

Adopting a multidisciplinary approach to climate adjudication, this book addresses how adjudicators decide cases by considering the influence of psychology, philosophy, legal education, film, literature, political economy, political ecology, judicial appointments, history, and climate science on their decision-making and ultimately on the (inconsistent) outcomes in climate cases. Drawing upon the humanities, science of climate change and/or social sciences to identify extra-legal factors that may drive the decision-making processes and outcomes of climate cases, this book uses case studies from different jurisdictions across the globe, addressing climate cases decided or pending in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and North America, and Oceania. In all, the volume will: - Engage with extra-legal influence to how show judges and arbitrators make their decisions in climate cases, shedding light on the inconsistent responses that climate cases have generated so far - Challenge assumptions of legal universalism, by recognising differences in how the law works in various - Inform actors involved in climate litigation (lawyers, judges, arbitrators, disputants), policymakers, and the public about how cases are decided

Prison building has moved from the margins to the mainstream of our penal politics. In recent years the UK Government has invested billions in new prison building and the main political parties are currently locked into a penal arms race over who can, and who will, build the most additional prison places in England and Wales. Prison building is now widely lauded as the definitive policy solution to the current prisons crisis and yet, this remains an elusive sphere of penal policymaking. Academic research remains in its infancy, and we still know very little about how these large investment decisions are made, by whom and for what reasons.
In seeking to shine a light on this subterranean and largely closed sphere of contemporary penal policymaking, this book presents the first systematic study of prison building programmes in England and Wales since the mid-1990’s punitive turn. Drawing upon extensive archival research, 28 exploratory qualitative interviews, publicly recorded data, historic satellite imagery and other mapping techniques this book has three main aims: (1) to provide an authoritative historical account of prison building activity in England and Wales since the mid-1990s punitive turn, (2) to explain why successive governments have chosen to invest in new prison building programmes and (3) to reflect upon how the prisons we build - functionally, architecturally, geographically – continue to shape our politics long after they have been constructed.
Thomas Guiney&nbsp;is Assistant&nbsp;Professor of Criminology in the School of Sociology and Social Policy&nbsp;at University of Nottingham, UK. Tom has published widely on the politics of punishment and recently published an edited collection&nbsp;Parole Futures: Rationalities, Institutions and Practices&nbsp;with Hart Bloomsbury (Oñati International Series in Law and Society). Tom sits on the Editorial Board of the&nbsp;British Journal of Criminology and is a regular contributor to public debates on criminal justice.

LITES - Legal Issues in Transdisciplinary Environmental Studies

This book investigates the urban crises of food insecurity and vacant land by examining how community gardens in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro serve as vital mechanisms for realizing the human right to food. Through a comparative study conducted between 2019 and 2023 involving 40 participants, the research explores urban commons’ practices and how they address dimensions of food availability, accessibility, acceptability, and sustainability. The findings reveal distinct motivations and effects shaped by local socioeconomic contexts: while Berlin’s gardens are primarily driven by socialization and environmental concerns, Rio de Janeiro’s gardens focus on food security and social empowerment. Despite the differences, both cities demonstrate a shared commitment to agroecological production as a tool for urban resilience. Ultimately, the study confirms that urban food-sharing practices in these spaces advance the right to food across various dimensions, highlighting the urgent need for urban governance that protects community gardens to foster a global social-ecological transformation.

This book offers practical and systematic tools for understanding the controversial dynamics of de-radicalization and extremism in the context of global terrorism. Since 2010 there has been a sharp increase in the number of extreme jihadist groups around the world. A surge in right-wing radicalization marked by hate speech and anti-immigrant anxieties has also been noted. States have subsequently sought to develop approaches to counter these groups, with variable success. While some countries have been relatively successful in countering radicalization, others have seen an increase in the number of terrorist attacks. Using comparative analysis, this book examines the controversial subject of de-radicalization as a tool of the state in modifying political behaviour. Drawing on multiple country case studies, it assesses how governments around the world use counter-terrorism policies and measures, be it through policing, the judicial process, state-sponsored programs or community approaches, to address extremist radicalization. It also considers how effective these policies have been in modifying extremist forms of behaviour, and why some countries have been more successful than others. It will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, international human rights, international relations and counter-terrorism studies.
