Decisions are everywhere--from a group's choice of pizza to a decision on a family vacation to the elections of political leaders. Central to the functioning of our organizations is the belief that these decisions reflect the wishes of voters. Yet most voting rules are unreliable and can lead to unfair outcomes. And, while a large body of academic literature describes the flaws and limitations of standard voting methods, little is known about why they occur.

In Fair Voting Methods, Donald G. Saari explores the difficulties that have plagued social choice theory for over seventy-five years. Focusing on ranked choice voting and group decision-making, Saari expands on Arrow's impossibility theorem and presents a more precise statement: all standard voting rules either fail to always rank the candidates to determine who is preferred to whom, or the voting outcomes can result in inferior choices that are not what the voters wanted. Saari then identifies and resolves the structures that negatively impact voting systems. While Arrow's seminal result asserted that the problems of standard voting systems are unavoidable, Saari makes a bold and compelling case that there are indeed usable fair voting methods. He introduces one such method that achieves Arrow's objectives of always ranking candidates with outcomes that reflect voters' intent. The book concludes by applying insights from voting theory into other topics where parts are also assembled into wholes, including judgement aggregation, corporate structures, crime prevention, the US Electoral College, and standard scientific procedures.

Contemporary capitalism is characterized by periods of vigorous economic growth and periods of slow or even negative growth. This book draws on the classical political economy approach to consider both economic cycles and economic growth and draw conclusions about the inherent instability of the modern economy. The book shows that the work of the old classical economists (Smith and Ricardo) and Marx is theoretically sound and capable of providing answers to both growth and cycles. It also demonstrates the potential and natural integration of growth and cycles in a single model. The microeconomic foundation of this model is the labor theory of value, which continues with the General Law of Capital Accumulation, the Law of the Falling Rate of Profit, and the movement of the Industrial Reserve Army of Labour. Finally, a dynamic model of growth-cum-cycles is constructed consisting of the evolution and interaction of five key variables, namely, the rate of profit, the propensity to invest in fixed capital, technological change, the reserve army of labour, and the rate of capital devaluation. The analysis demonstrates that economic growth and cycles are not disconnected from each other, as they have been treated in the literature, but rather interdependent aspects of the same evolutionary process of a capitalist economy. This book will interest readers in the history of economic thought, economic growth and development, macroeconomics, and political economy.

This open access book investigates the role played by copyright on the digitisation of cultural heritage from three angles: the theoretical differences between cultural property law and copyright; a comparative analysis of the EU, UK, and US; and analysis of current practices and concerns, based on empirical research. As heritage digitisation projects become increasingly common for purposes such as preservation and access, the impact of copyright is also becoming more problematic. In order to provide a full and current picture of the copyright problem, the book first introduces the reader to the debates on the scope and ownership of cultural heritage and provides an overview of the copyright implications of the digitisation process and newer uses, including 2D and 3D scanning; virtual and augmented reality; text and data mining; and artificial intelligence. The author then divides the main critical analysis into three parts, referred to as the 'clashes with copyright'. The first, clash in theory, lies between cultural property law and copyright justification theories. The second clash is in the different legal approaches to digitising in-copyright, public domain, orphan, out-of-commerce and unpublished works in the chosen jurisdictions, focusing on the relevant rights and defences. The third clash is in the interests of stakeholders, based on public reactions to existing projects and cases, supported by interviews with heritage professionals engaging in digitisation. By placing itself in this particular intersection of law, heritage, and technology, the book will be of interest to both intellectual property academics and cultural heritage professionals. Portraits of Life after Juvenile Incarceration

Introducing new insights into the history of ceramic design and consumption, Neil Ewins departs from the focus on manufacturers and producers and presents a third perspective that puts the multifaceted lives of the merchants, importers and dealers at the centre. Challenging the notion that intermediaries involved in the Anglo-American ceramic trade from the late 18th into the 19th century were simply motivated by maximizing profits and widespread market demands, Ewin's alternative approach demonstrates the value of taking their culture, identity and conscience into account. The geographic gap between the British manufacturer and the American consumer meant that those involved in mercantile activities assumed a highly significant role. Ewins analyses a range of sources including city directories, advertisements, newspapers and family trees to identify those involved in the ceramic trade, supplemented by archival material relating to the Wainwright and Ovington families. Illustrated with examples of ceramics and engravings, chapters explore how the intermediaries commissioned and marketed ceramics for different reasons, influenced by their political, social, religious and moral views. Ewins investigates how culture and a strong sense of identity, the abolition movement, kinship and family ties, religious beliefs and community, and the interracial experience all played a part in the manufacture, distribution and consumption of ceramics in the US market. This volume demonstrates how the role of intermediaries deserves a place in the history of the Anglo-American ceramic trade; beyond design and consumption being production-led or market-led, it reveals that it could also be conscience-led and suggests the picture is far more complex than once understood.
