What can one city tell us about the global textile waste problem? This Open Access study is the first detailed ethnography of clothing waste infrastructures that starts where the problem starts - the Global North. Based on more than 100 interviews, cultural anthropologist Heike Derwanz follows the journey of fast fashion in Hamburg, Germany: starting with two women from different socio-economic backgrounds sorting through their wardrobes, travelling through local flea markets, eBay, church clothes banks, upcycling brands and recycling sites, only to end up in homes and waste heaps in the Global South. Bringing together human agents such as designers, social workers and vintage sellers with objects from containers, plastic sacks and internet platforms to piles of sorted textiles, this on-the-ground cultural study reveals how the global economic system of fast fashion shapes local infrastructures entangled in everyday lives. Combining material culture, waste studies and economic perspectives to scrutinize the so-called circular economy of today's global textile recycling market, Derwanz investigates what agency modern consumers really have in the lifecycle of their clothes. The neglect of maritime governance by governments, institutions and the industry itself has been nothing short of remarkable. For a sector that is characterised by widespread corruption, inefficiency and excessive environmental pollution, injury and death, the inadequacies of the current structure of control, policy and administration, which have persisted throughout its development over many years whilst increasingly recognised, has resulted in little progress or improvement. This book provides a detailed yet concise and succinct interpretation of what constitutes maritime governance and its significance for the success, operation and influence of the sector.
The major drivers, their impact and how they inter-relate, are identified and the whole process is placed within the context of globalisation, a major factor within the shipping and ports industry. A framework for analysing maritime governance structures is put forward centred around jurisdiction, objectives, instruments and agencies. The issue of maritime governance is then examined from an international policy perspective and how this differs from domestic agendas. Conclusions are drawn on the future for maritime governance, how the current situation can be improved and the remaining problems considered. Michael Roe holds the Chair of Maritime and Logistics Governance at the University of Plymouth, UK. He previously worked with the Greater London Council and the Universities of Aston, Coventry, London Metropolitan and the University of London (City). Martin Papenheim legt mit seinem Buch über die Neo-Sannyasins die erste umfassende Geschichte der Bhagwan-Bewegung in Deutschland vor, die als wohl bedeutendste neureligiöse Strömung der Bonner Republik gelten kann. Der Ashram des indischen Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (später bekannt als Osho) in Poona und die Stadt Rajneeshpuram in Oregon (USA) entwickelten sich zu in der gesamten westlichen Welt beachteten Meditations- und Therapiezentren. In Deutschland erreichte die Bewegung um 1980 ihren spektakulären Höhepunkt mit etwa 30.000 Neo-Sannyasins, rund einem Drittel der weltweiten Anhängerschaft, von denen 400 in eigenen Kommunen lebten. Keine andere religiöse Bewegung provozierte ein derart großes Medienecho und so intensive öffentliche Auseinandersetzungen wie die Anhänger Bhagwans. Obwohl die Organisation mittlerweile weitgehend zerfallen ist, hat sie in der deutschen Kultur bleibende Spuren hinterlassen. Die Darstellung stützt sich auf umfassendes, bisher kaum beachtetes Quellenmaterial und Schilderungen von Zeitzeugen, so dass sich zahlreiche neue Perspektiven auf die Thematik eröffnen.
