Der Tausch hat eine zentrale Bedeutung für die Zivilisationsgeschichte, die das Buch bis in die Gegenwart verfolgt und vor dem Hintergrund der ökologischen Krise kritisch reflektiert. Ursprünglich aus dem Ritus entstanden, reichen die Spuren seiner vielfältigen historischen Aufgaben bis in die Marktwirtschaft der Gegenwart. Das kulturökonomische Anliegen des Buches nutzt kunsthistorische und literaturwissenschaftliche Ansätze und ist sowohl wirtschaftshistorischer wie auch geistesgeschichtlicher Art. So maß die europäische Aufklärung dem Tausch eine Bedeutung bei auf dem Weg in die republikanische Zukunft. Als psychophysischer Zwang sollte er die arbeitende Bevölkerung zur Emsigkeit erziehen und die wirtschaftende Gesellschaft auf den Wohlfahrtspfad führen. 
Zwischen diesen Anfangsgründen der Marktwirtschaftslehre und der Ökonomik heute liegen Welten, die sich durch gegensätzliche Perspektiven auf den Tausch unterscheiden. Plural fächert das Buch sie auf und sieht die Chance für einen heterodox-ökonomischen Ansatz in der Fokussierung auf die diversen Masken der Identität, die der Tausch dem Subjekt der Geschichte aufsetzt. The first is a long-term evolutionary process that links survival-enhancing behaviors with positive emotional responses, forming "primary preferences." These preferences are inherited and reflect conditions under which early humans thrived. This book revisits after about close to 20 years the East Asian Welfare Model when looked at from an ideal-typical perspective. Ideal-typical welfare regimes do not change, in general, quickly, they are stable, due to the higher level of observation applied (using a high-flying bird’s or satellite’s perspective).Twenty years, however, are a long time also in welfare state system development. A great deal of mega events and mega trends have impacted on social policy all over the world in these last two decades. These include the Covid 19 pandemic, gender movements, rock-bottom low overall fertility (in the post-industrial setting), global production shifts (a.k.a. globalization of industrial production), and last but not least technological revolution brought upon by super-digitalization and artificial intelligence applications, and information society in general, and with it technological unemployment of a large parts of a whole new generation having become unemployable while they have been highly trained at college and university levels.It is high time to look at East Asia welfare state systems up close again, and the right theoretical and methodological lens, i.e. applying ideal-typical theory and methodology, to an otherwise not graspable fully dynamic and intertwined phenomenon: continued welfare state growth amidst crises and change.

This book introduces SAGE—the Sentiment-Augmented General Equilibrium framework—as a unified theory of choice, finance, and growth that integrates human sentiment into the core of economic modeling. Departing from fragmented traditions across intertemporal choice theory, asset pricing, and growth models, SAGE develops a utility-based structure in which all assets—money, bonds, capital—deliver utility contingent on liquidity,&nbsp;price volatility, and sentiment-driven expectations. Agents form rational yet sentiment-sensitive expectations. Central to the model is the dynamic interaction between reason and sentiment: expectations evolve not only from knowledge and information but also from psychological states, market moods, and narrative feedback loops. The reverse holds as well, since agents’ expectations about the future shape their current sentiment. SAGE thus explains how sentiment and reason affect the utility agents derive from the full range of resources available to them and shifts in their portfolio choices reshape macroeconomic outcomes even in the absence of structural shocks. The model reproduces observed anomalies—persistent stagnation, excess volatility, asset mispricing—as rational equilibria under uncertainty and belief asymmetry. By embedding financial frictions, market depth, and institutional trust into the utility calculus, SAGE also links macroeconomic dynamics to the quality of financial intermediation. The result is a flexible, tractable, and psychologically grounded framework that offers new directions for empirical research, policy analysis, and the scientific unification of economics.
