A People's History of Portugal reconstructs the last two hundred years of class struggle in Portugal. Raquel Varela and Roberto della Santa examine the material conditions of its people - examining the real causes of the revolutionary waves and counter-revolutionary backlash.

Starting in the early nineteenth century, the theme of colonialism and its antithesis runs through the narrative, as working-class life was closely entwined with Portuguese colonial exploitation. Despite relatively slow industrial development, Portuguese people spearheaded a surprisingly vigorous radical culture of dissent, eventually sparking a social and political revolution in 1974. More recently, Portugal's inclusion in the European Union has put its people in a neoliberal stranglehold that stifles democracy to this day. Are the working people of Portugal able to carry the memory of the revolutionary past into its future? This is a history of, and for, the people.

Raquel Varela is a professor at New University of Lisbon, and Honorary Fellow at the International Institute for Social History. She is the author of A People's History of the Portuguese Revolution, A People's History of Europe, and the graphic novel Utopia, with Robson Villalba.

Roberto della Santa is an Integrated Researcher at the Open University of Lisbon, and Scientific Co-Coordinator of the OCVT/UNL. He is the co-author of The 25th of April Began in Africa, Working and Living in the 21st Century, and Global Labour Studies (in Portuguese).

This book presents a narrative and social science history of the powered upper-limb prosthesis. It examines how research, innovation and design changed in the prosthetics industry from 1945 to the present.A History of Knowledge and Production in Powered Prosthetic Arms opens with a history of artificial upper-limb making from ancient Egypt to 1945. It surveys the transition from early modern iron hands to eighteenth-century realistic-looking prostheses, influenced by the new ideas about rehabilitation, politeness, disability and aesthetic improvement. The book traces the evolution of these ideas as well as Enlightenment visions of scientific discovery of the body and its application in reproducing nature through technological progress. It shows the transition in the twentieth century from the craft design of upper limbs to university and clinic-based interdisciplinary methods in the production of new electric and gas prosthetic arms and hands. It contains case studies on commercial limbs developed at MIT, Ottobock, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of New Brunswick, Ontario Centre for Crippled Children, Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital and the University of Utah.The book will be of interest to undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty members and professionals interested in biomedical engineering, prosthetics, rehabilitation, occupational therapy and the history of science, technology, medicine and disability.

This book was originally published in 1981 at a time when mass unemployment had returned to the United Kingdom. Now reissued with a new Preface by the author's literary executor, the essays in this volume discuss in detail the damage that was being done to the community and the economy at national and regional levels as a result of government policy. There are chapters on the political and economic aspects of the problem, on the comparison with the inter-war years, on youth unemployment and on unemployment in each of the regions worst affected. Originally published in 1964, at a time of much public unease regarding redundancy, this book contains the results of a comprehensive survey, inspired by a suggestion of the then Minister of Labour that the mass redundancies in the Midlands motor industry of 1956 merited a full-scale investigation. The findings are based on an analysis of a 1 in 10 sample of men made redundant in Birmingham in the period. Among the matters examined are the difficulties encountered in obtaining work after redundancy; the range of geographical mobility and the role played by the then employment exchanges in securing new employment. Other chapters focus on the financial hardship caused; the resort to savings and the impact of the redundancies on the gender balance in the workforce. The impact of the dismissals on trade union affiliation is also considered, as are the men's verdicts on the 'fairness' of the selection procedure adopted.
