Religionswissenschaft

The book offers a comprehensive and innovative examination of how international law and institutions navigate the complexities of modern conflicts and crises. It is structured around four key themes which provide an integrated approach to understanding the legal and institutional responses to today’s global challenges. The first theme, Public International Law in Conflicts and Crisis, critically explores the failures and gaps in current legal frameworks, such as the ineffectiveness of jus ad bellum and jus in bello in the Russia-Ukraine war and the limitations of international organizations, revealing the inadequacies of existing international regulations. The second theme, Migration, Refugee Protection, and Human Rights in Contemporary Crises analyzes how global crises, including pandemics, exacerbate existing inequalities and disrupt traditional protection frameworks. It offers a critical analysis of the legal status of settlers, the protection challenges for unaccompanied refugee children, and the broader implications of global crises on human rights. Geopolitical Dynamics and Institutional Responses in a Changing World forms the third theme, analyzing how shifting power structures and geopolitical tensions reshape international law and institutional responses. This section provides insights into regional conflicts, such as those in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, examining how global governance struggles to adapt to evolving challenges. The final theme, Evolving Socioeconomic Landscapes of Power Structures Amid Crisis, focuses on how crises influence corporate responsibility, economic resilience, and international trade. Introducing innovative legal perspectives like Egocentric Legal Formalism (ELF), it explains the impact of crises on global power asymmetries. This book is essential for policymakers, legal professionals, international relations scholars, and anyone interested in understanding the multifaceted legal and institutional responses to conflicts and crises in the 21st century. Its interdisciplinary approach, combining legal theory with practical analysis, offers valuable insights into navigating today’s global challenges and shaping more effective responses for the future.

It is seldom, if ever, that readers and writers see the different stages of a piece of writing in progress. In this unique volume, 16 of the US's most distinguished writers pull back the curtain on their creative and revision processes whilst drafting their works of creative nonfiction. Using side-by-side examples of first drafts and final versions of their writing, including original full-page reproductions from the writers' personal notebooks, an original, illuminating essay accompanies each draft that recounts the journey from inspiration to completion. Offering a generous insight into the creative process from the rough bold strokes to refined, clear, elegant prose, this behind-the-scenes look delves into the creative minds of working writers, including African American, Latino, Asian American, and indigenous writers from across the US. An invaluable resource for students and instructors looking to enliven the classroom or just offering practicing writers a peak into the processes of their peers, this book presents the false starts and missteps, the self-editing, tinkering, cutting, rearranging, and craft working writers make in the plight for perfectly polished prose. With nothing like it on the market, The Art of Revising Creative Nonfiction is an enlightening and unparalleled collection of modern-day creativity in action, a must have for aspiring writers and teachers of all levels.

Chain of Ideas

This “deeply felt memoir of race and history that defies social erasures of the diasporic Palestinian experience” (The Whiting Award Judges Citation) explores Elena Dudum’s transformational journey and evolving relationship to Palestine. My father scours the web for century-old magazines about Palestine. For years, he would talk about these mysterious documents but rarely show them to anyone. “I have proof,” he would say to whoever would listen, “that Palestine exists.” In her Palestinian Christian home in San Francisco, Elena Dudum was raised in a household ruled by her father’s lectures. He taught her everything: the story of her grandparents’ flight from their homeland, the history of her family’s orange groves, and the facts of the ongoing occupation of Palestine. Above all, he taught her not to forget. Soon his lessons consumed her childhood, and Elena found herself shrinking from an inheritance that felt both sacred and suffocating. For years, she resisted it all until a family trip to Palestine shattered the abstraction of her homeland. Checkpoints, razed olive groves, soldiers—it was all plainly in front of her, as were the ghosts of her family’s past. What was once always just out of reach, now pressed against her body. Back in the United States, something in her quietly unraveled. She tried to outrun what she now knew by burying herself in elite institutions and the rising world of tech, where ambition was rewarded and history was inconvenient. Eventually, the inheritance she thought she could escape demanded reckoning. Braiding rich personal narrative with archival fragments and cultural critique, They Told Me Back Home Would Be Beautiful traces one woman’s journey as she returns—slowly, deliberately—to her father’s lessons, determined to claim them on her own terms.
