Wie werden Gender- und Queer-History-Projekte im lokalen Kontext und im kleinstädtischen Raum umgesetzt? Die Beiträger*innen widmen sich anhand des Fallbeispiels Südtirol der Frauen-, Geschlechter- und Queer-Geschichte in Minderheitengebieten. Südtirol repräsentiert einen Kontext intersektionaler Diversität, in dem verschiedene Arten von Minderheiten (z.B. hinsichtlich ihrer sexuellen Orientierung, ihrer Geschlechtsidentität oder ihres Migrationshintergrundes) aufeinandertreffen. This book presents an exhaustive analytical history of the great Spanish publishing house Editorial Gustavo Gili, specifically the scientific and technological works in its catalogue that were published during the years of the Franco regime. The history recounted in the book, however, is rather unconventional, a cultural history that analyzes the publishing house through its publications and how they took shape in the hands of the actors involved in their preparation during the different phases of production, promotion, and sales. All these concerns are taken into account in a work that establishes science on paper, examining the myriad issues related to the reception and reading of technical books in Franco's Spain.

The first publication to focus on a rarely seen series of jazz-infused collages that explore the African American experience and the artist’s lifelong relationship to jazz music, by one of the most important and influential visual artists of the twentieth&nbsp;century. Bearden (1911–1988) was a prominent African American artist often described as the consummate jazz painter, known for his innovative collages that explored themes of Black American culture, history, and personal experiences. This publication reexamines Bearden’s life and work in the context of jazz, tracing the musician’s impact from the artists’ earliest oil paintings to his iconic collages. In 1981, Bearden created nineteen collages that the artist called his “Paris Blues,” or simply “Jazz,” series. Conceived as pages for an oversized book that would be a response to the Hollywood movie Paris Blues (1961)—though featuring Harlem and New Orleans along with Paris—the series has been little known until now. Here the wildly colorful illustrations are set alongside Bearden’s encounters with iconic jazz musicians, clubs, and cities. Examined for the first time in depth, the Paris Blues series makes a major statement on the relationships between visual art, jazz music, and urban spaces. The book also includes poignant photographs of Bearden and musicians in the 1950s–70s, such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

Julian Wacker shows that music videos produced for artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Jorja Smith, Kano, Kojey Radical, and Scarlxrd reframe politically disenfranchised and culturally stigmatized council estates as unruly and malleable spaces on the move, ultimately disrupting exclusionary patterns stratified across the neoliberal city. Reading these music videos also provides insights into how they intervene in stereotyping narratives surrounding Black British ¿urban¿ culture in the UK.

This open access book examines the work of the 17th-century Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) - a figure who barely left the city of Seville - as a way of understanding globalization, its consequences, and its limits. Full of saints, friars, virgins, and Christs, or poor people and cheerful pícaros oblivious to social injustice, Murillo's painting has been considered representative of the Counter-Reformation and the exponent of an immobile, even introverted, society that regressed with the 'crisis of the 17th century'. Early Globalization, Spain, and Seventeenth-Century Seville introduces a global perspective by considering the Atlantic art market and developing comparisons with Protestant paintings and an analysis of Murillo's iconography alongside the social and political theory of his time. Such comparisons and analyses illuminate a different image, emphasizing the idea of a common European path towards modernity, individualism, emotional self-control and social change. The book also examines how Murillo's contemporaries interpreted his iconography. The study of different 'layers of globalization', going back to the analysis of the Christian tradition, reveals the existence of political utopias, positive forms of valuing work and an image of the community that, opposed to the development of the speculative economy associated with globalization, would characterize the European history, with all its contradictions. The result is a new and sharper understanding of the tensions created by globalization in the field of art, in the construction of imagined communities, and in social relations in the early modern era.
