Field Instruments of Design

Every given site is specific, and successful landscape design has to respond to its given features. This means, before proposing the transformation of a site, one needs to understand its form. This Pamphlet argues that it is impossible to design landscape without a thorough knowledge of field instruments. These measure the geometry of the land, they observe and describe physical features, and moreover, help to conceive the 'topology' of a landscape. This book assesses what field instruments actually measure, what they reveal, and how they have always influenced the course of landscape architecture.
