Routledge Studies in North American Politics

Speaking to wider debates of U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy, its interests and motivations in International Relations and International Political Economy, and processes of regionalism with regard to political-economic integration. NAFTA-land Security present a clear, important and original argument to all those struggling with how best to understand the overall policy aims that drive U.S. thinking, and how they relate to global trends and developments in U.S. foreign policy.

North America is increasingly an integrated economic hub, and Canada and Mexico are important to the U.S. (and vice versa) in terms of energy security, trade, cross-border production, and more. This has made regional security and stability more strategically important than the already high level it had attained through geography. In order to understand North America’s growing strategic significance, we need to take a closer look at U.S. policy within the region. In this book, Paul Ashby examines how U.S. now considers North America, defined regionally as the countries within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as a distinct and strategically important economic and security space. Through closer examination of several policy programs with both Canada and Mexico, Ashby demonstrates how the U.S. is actively constructing a regional, North American security architecture based around, but also operating within NAFTA’s perimeters. He contends that increased regional economic integration and important interdependencies spurred by NAFTA are driving, and that these were given far greater impetus by the events and regional impacts of 9/11. North America’s growing strategic importance to the U.S. has encouraged it to take regional security more seriously. José Rente Nascimento is a Brazilian scholar who specializes in forestry, agriculture, and environmental economics. He has supported development and conservation projects throughout Latin America while working for international institutions, governments, and NGOs. A former senior natural resource specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank, Nascimento is a forester and holds an MP and a PhD from the University of Minnesota.

 Sebastián Álvarez
 is Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile and Associate Researcher at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. His work explores the history of finance and banking in Latin America, with particular attention to how capital markets shape economic policy and international relations. He is the author of 
 Mexican Banks and Foreign Finance
 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).
 Ezequiel Spector
 is Research Professor and Director of the Master of Arts program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile. He is the author of

This volume explores the state of representative democracy on the global stage. It does this against the backdrop of crises such as the USA Capitol attack on 6 January 2021, recent refusals to accept election results in various countries, and attempts to restrict the voting franchise, as well as longer-term trends such as the rise of populism and declining trust in political elites. The first substantive chapter examines representative democracy in theory, history and practice today. Taking the representative model as their point of departure, the subsequent chapters explore a range of themes in relation to this model. The contributions include timely reappraisals of democracy in countries, such as the UK and USA, with old, well-established democratic structures, as well as analyses of the state of democracy in regions such as Africa, Asia and South America, where democracy has had a more chequered history.
