Introducing new insights into the history of ceramic design and consumption, Neil Ewins departs from the focus on manufacturers and producers and presents a third perspective that puts the multifaceted lives of the merchants, importers and dealers at the centre. Challenging the notion that intermediaries involved in the Anglo-American ceramic trade from the late 18th into the 19th century were simply motivated by maximizing profits and widespread market demands, Ewin's alternative approach demonstrates the value of taking their culture, identity and conscience into account. The geographic gap between the British manufacturer and the American consumer meant that those involved in mercantile activities assumed a highly significant role. Ewins analyses a range of sources including city directories, advertisements, newspapers and family trees to identify those involved in the ceramic trade, supplemented by archival material relating to the Wainwright and Ovington families. Illustrated with examples of ceramics and engravings, chapters explore how the intermediaries commissioned and marketed ceramics for different reasons, influenced by their political, social, religious and moral views. Ewins investigates how culture and a strong sense of identity, the abolition movement, kinship and family ties, religious beliefs and community, and the interracial experience all played a part in the manufacture, distribution and consumption of ceramics in the US market. This volume demonstrates how the role of intermediaries deserves a place in the history of the Anglo-American ceramic trade; beyond design and consumption being production-led or market-led, it reveals that it could also be conscience-led and suggests the picture is far more complex than once understood.

This book examines the modernisation of Iran's economy during the overlooked period from 1921 to 1946. By cross-analysing new and understudied primary sources from North America, Europe and West Asia, it argues how, in spite of challenging circumstances during these years, the country saw significant achievements in its banking, industrial, foreign trade, commercial and transportation sectors. The book marks a departure from the state-society paradigm's focus on Reza Shah, instead revealing the coordinated agency of Iranian officials, merchants and others. It asserts that the economic institutions created by these local actors were a clear indication of their nationalist convictions and internationalist outlooks, and that the state policies of this initial phase of Iran's national economy exhibited more rationality, continuity and global awareness than has been previously assumed.

How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.

In the late medieval and early modern times, Assam had trading connections with neighbouring areas of Bhutan, Tibet, Bengal and Myanmar (Burma). This book is about the commercial activities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in and around Assam. It looks at colonial Assam's economy, its traders, mercantile communities, riverine trade and transportation and bazaars and examines the use of resources by the colonial regime. This volume is the first to focus on the presentation of Ancient Egypt in video games. The contributions examine diverse topics concerning how Egyptian history, culture, monuments, and the land itself are portrayed across a diverse range of game genres. Over forty years of video games are analysed, including those from well-known franchises (Assassin's Creed; Tomb Raider), as well as those from independent developers. The games studied employ Ancient Egypt in different ways, as the main historical setting of the game, as the inspiration for the game's world, or as a point of reference for specific aspects of the game. Contributions by game designers from Oneiric Studios also reveal the motivations for using Egypt as the source for their game design and narrative (Path of Ra). The number of games discussed in this volume and their diversity demonstrates the important role that games play in shaping the popular imagination of Ancient Egypt.
