Ethics: The Fundamentals explores core ideas and arguments in moral theory by introducing students to different philosophical approaches to ethics, including virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, divine command theory, and feminist ethics. * The first volume in the new Fundamentals of Philosophy series.

Examines the discordance among the public over controversial historic monumentsand how it should be addressed, highlighting how iconoclasm is confronted through global heritage management theory.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the United States and Canada rarely experienced iconoclasm, the premeditated destruction of visual symbols, because of their specific emotional or ideological content in the public square. This is changing. As North Americans continue to reject the tangible and intangible heritage of institutionalized white supremacy, iconoclasm acts are happening with greater frequency. The death of George Floyd in May 2020 hastened the demand by Americans to remove historic monuments; so much so, that protesters took matters into their own hands and pulled down statues of historical figures, not limited to the American Civil War but also associated with European colonialism before the American Revolution and during the reign of Queen Victoria in Canada.

For historic preservationists and conservationists, iconoclasm is now the most consequential issue in the field and will continue to be a matter of contention for the foreseeable future. Motives for enacting iconoclasm can be justified, but what are the consequences for doing so, and how, in turn, will this determine the future of our public spaces in towns and cities? More fundamentally, is the current period of iconoclasm leading us to reconsider the public square as part of the built environment? This book will be the first theory-informed work to examine the discordance among the public over controversial historic monuments in the historic landscape and how it should be addressed. It challenges architects, landscape architects, conservationists, preservationists, elected officials, and the public to reconsider the public square and whether or not civic art that memorializes is still relevant or a practice that can be reimagined. It also considers the after-effects of iconoclasm acts: How should we redesign public civic spaces after we have either destroyed or removed historic monuments? As societal values change in regard to public memorialization, how will heritage practitioners, conservationist technicians, and urban designers grapple with working in the civic realm, which may be considered antiquated but continues to exist in our cities?

The book examines how iconoclasm is confronted through global heritage management theory. During the second half of the twentieth century, UNESCO and the European Union drafted charters to protect historic monuments from acts of war and degradation. The author considers these sets of principles and other international approaches to contested and conflicted heritage in addressing racism-based heritage that is embedded in North American heritage, from theoretical, architectural, and legal perspectives. France, which first experienced iconoclasm during the Revolution, has grappled with iconoclasm throughout its modern history. Revolutionary leader Henri Grégoire even invented a noun for it: "vandalism." Through the creation of an environment removed from a historic object's context-the public museum, the Louvre-France conceived institutional iconoclasm. From the revolutions and cultural upheavals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the calamities of two world wars in the twentieth century, Europeans have developed policy and a legal framework that address iconoclasm. The book intends to examine this legal framework closely. It will inform the direction that the North American heritage field should take in order to accept that heritage changes, and must change, in response to our own needs to acknowledge multiple histories and identities in a diverse society, while simultaneously recognizing that iconoclasm is a part of how a society resolves its emotional responses to its built heritage.

Iconoclasm in the Public Square

Social Science for Social Justice

Cultural appropriation is one of the most contested issues of our time - but what does it actually feel like to have your culture taken, repackaged, and sold back to you? In this book, Rina Arya moves beyond familiar debates to place the lived experiences of minoritised communities at the centre of the discussion. Drawing on postcolonial theory, lived religion, cultural studies, and her experiences as a British South Asian, she examines how cultural forms are commodified, transformed, and returned to their communities with renewed authority. Arya argues that the deepest harms of cultural appropriation are not only economic or representational but also psychological, reshaping how people understand their culture and identity. Combining rigorous scholarship with personal testimony, this book challenges readers to rethink who has the authority to define culture - and what is lost when that authority shifts away from the communities from which culture originates.

Reclaiming the Debate on Cultural Appropriation

This book explores how trial lawyers, driven by self-interest, use argumentation to shape legal and ethical ideals in society through their manipulation of language, people, and objects. It argues that by employing various persuasive styles and deceptive strategies, lawyers influence juries and affect broader legal and communal values. These individual actions, while focused on client interests, collectively contribute to significant social changes in the practice and perception of law.

What We Ask Google

In his prize-winning Sunday Times bestseller, An Immense World, Ed Yong invited us to perceive the world through other animals' senses. Now he transforms our view of the world once again by revealing the hidden wonders of life at different scales.'Utterly extraordinary. Yong's spectacular new book is not just a mesmerizing examination of the wonders of life on Earth; it's no less than a biography of life itself' EMILY ST JOHN MANDELAll around us, just beyond our awareness, life proceeds in astonishing ways. The 100-ton blue whale easily crosses oceans, singing to fellow whales thousands of miles away. Alongside it a bacterium swims in a drop of seawater that is as vast for it as an ocean is to the whale. Hummingbirds move too quickly for us to follow, while plants move too languorously for us to perceive.Every living thing operates at its own scale - the blend of size, range, pace, longevity, and influence that define the contours and rhythms of a life. We tend to think of the human scale as life's default. But in Life Beyond Measure, Ed Yong coaxes us outside of our medium-sized, medium-lived, medium-paced, moderately mobile range and introduces us to entirely new worlds, some that could fit between two grains of sand. Fireflies assembling their luminous chorus; a bristlecone pine that's older than paper rounds the corner of its fifth millennium; shorebirds that fly across the world's biggest ocean without stopping; Pando, a forest that may be a single tree; and a host of other dazzling, disorienting entities expand our understanding of what life can be.Mind-bending, exhilarating, and profound, Life Beyond Measure is a call to cast off our human perspective, to lose ourselves in the vastness and strangeness of nature, and by doing so, to discover how intimately connected to the rest of life we are.

The Chicago Foucault Project

Newly published lectures by Foucault on critique, Enlightenment, and the care of the self--now in paperback. On May 27, 1978, Michel Foucault gave a lecture to the French Society of Philosophy where he redefined his entire philosophical project in light of Immanuel Kant's 1784 text "What Is Enlightenment?" Foucault strikingly characterizes critique as the political and moral attitude consisting in the "art of not being governed like this," one that performs the function of destabilizing power relations and creating the space for a new formation of the self within the "politics of truth." This volume presents the first critical edition of this crucial lecture alongside a previously unpublished lecture about the culture of the self and three public debates with Foucault at the University of California, Berkeley, in April 1983. There, for the first time, Foucault establishes a direct connection between his reflections on the Enlightenment and his analyses of Greco-Roman antiquity. However, far from suggesting a return to the ancient culture of the self, Foucault invites his audience to build a "new ethics" that bypasses the traditional references to religion, law, and science.

"What Is Critique?" and "The Culture of the Self"

A blueprint for how we can collectively build a thriving world, from a leading behavioural scientistEat healthily, cut back on alcohol, quit smoking, cycle to work, fly less - we all know what we should be doing. So why aren't we?The answer is both simple and radical: the world is stacked against us. From the moment we wake up, our decisions are shaped by the shops we visit, the streets we walk, the ads we scroll through. These environments are not neutral. They are designed for our convenience and immediate gratification, and to serve the interests of four industries: tobacco, ultra-processed food, alcohol and fossil fuels.Together, these industries drive the climate crisis, from greenhouse gas emissions to deforestation, and contribute to at least one in four deaths worldwide. Yet we are told the problem is one of personal responsibility - that with more information, smarter habits or new technologies, we can change our behaviour. This book challenges those myths. Drawing on decades of cutting-edge science and compelling case studies from around the world, leading behavioural scientist Theresa Marteau explores what actually works, and why those in power keep failing to act on the evidence. From taxing sugary drinks in Mexico to redesigning streets in Paris, from restricting junk food advertising in London to electing more women to office, Marteau shows how proven interventions applied at scale could transform our health and the health of our planet.Clear-eyed and incisive, this is an inspiring blueprint for how together, citizens and governments can push back against corporate power and build a better, brighter future.

Reciprocity begins with a simple but unsettling question: why have we come to believe that human beings are naturally self-interested, competitive and acquisitive? This galvanising, perspective-shifting book dismantles the myth of Homo economicus to show us the way towards a world whose realities align with our true selves.Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, evolutionary biology, psychology, economics and social epidemiology, Richard Wilkinson demonstrates that the characteristics which we assume to be our human nature are in fact effects of the market societies we live in. He traces how various systems of exchange have created profoundly different forms of social life throughout the course of history, shaping our behaviours, motivations, and the kinds of people we become. Though it may often feel like it, the avarice and oppressions that defines the twenty-first century are not an unchangeable reality we simply have to live with. The book explains why inequality, status competition and consumerism hold so much power over us and reveals the depths to which these forces are entwined with the ever-rising crises of mental illness, political polarisation and environmental destruction. Rather than asking how we can make individuals behave better, it makes a compelling case for restructuring our societies to make life happier, meaningful and more fulfilling for one and all.Rigorously researched, bracingly practical and full of passion and hope in equal measure, Reciprocity offers a bold reinterpretation of the world we live in. It equips us with the necessary tools to look beyond and remake it in our very own, amiably human image.
