Environmental Crime and Collaborative State Intervention

Trust between the police and the communities they serve is fundamental to effective law enforcement, yet its erosion continues to challenge public safety worldwide. This edited volume examines community policing as an evolving paradigm in modern law enforcement, bringing together perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and researchers. Tracing its development from Sir Robert Peel's nineteenth-century policing principles to contemporary initiatives such as Kerala's Janamaithri Suraksha Project, the volume offers comparative perspectives from the United States, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and India.
The contributions critically examine established frameworks, including Broken Windows and Zero Tolerance theories, while assessing their relevance to the Indian context and advocating indigenous approaches responsive to local socio-economic conditions. The volume also explores practical dimensions of community policing, including victim-oriented policing, restorative justice, drug-crime prevention, tribal policing, and citizen-participation initiatives such as Friends of Police and Students in Responsible Police.

Designed for academics, policymakers, police professionals, and students of criminology, forensic science, sociology, and public administration, this volume provides a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of community-oriented policing, its evolving practices, and its potential to strengthen police-community relationships and enhance public safety.

How Cold War geopolitics and domestic capitalism changed the trajectory of India’s computing industry India today is widely recognized for producing world-class tech talent and Silicon Valley leaders, yet captures only a fraction of the global tech industry’s profits, primarily providing skilled but inexpensive labor for Western corporations. Computing in the Age of Decolonization uncovers the overlooked history behind this paradox, tracing India's ambitious but ultimately thwarted drive to build a self-reliant computing industry from the 1950s to the 1980s. After independence in 1947, Indian scientists and policymakers at institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research saw computing as central to national sovereignty, economic growth, and scientific advancement. Through projects such as the groundbreaking TIFRAC computer and the decisive expulsion of IBM, they aimed for technological independence. But almost immediately, these initiatives faced powerful political and economic headwinds. Indian computer scientists grappled with Cold War politics, international trade imbalances, US corporate monopolies, and strategic decisions by India's technocratic elite, who favored profitable technical services over costly investments in research and manufacturing. In narrating this lost future, Computing in the Age of Decolonization shows that genuine technological independence requires more than technical expertise—it demands addressing enduring political and social structures rooted in colonial legacies. As global struggles over technology intensify, this book reveals how historical pathways continue to shape contemporary battles for technological and economic sovereignty.

Redefining the Diversity and Dynamism of Natural Resources Management in the Global South

This book studies one part of the Sundarbans, the largest and one of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems in the world. The study is placed in the context of highly topical international debates on biodiversity, climate change and economic transformation, in a region of South Asia that still faces immense population pressure and severe poverty. An analysis of existing and potential future policies sets the debate in a comparative international perspective that has relevance well beyond the confines of South Asia.

While there have been a large number of studies on the socio-economic aspects of physical quality of life in the Sunderbans, there are very few perception studies except at a basic level. The current volume has two major aspects. The first part contains a detailed study of overall
demography and objective life condition
which includes (a) quality and ownership of private goods – equipment and machinery, livestock, house, land, consumer goods; (b) quality of public goods and amenities and their accessibility; (c) objective measures of relatively abstract factors related to social, political and familial environment such as quality of governance, extent of gender equality, social inclusion, social harmony, security, law and order, family bondings; (d) financial assets and indebtedness; (e) income and expenditure; (f) natural and man-made calamity, and; (g) vulnerability related to points (d), (e) and (f) above.

The second part comprises a detailed study of
subjective life satisfaction, and value systems and priorities
. The former refers to
people’s perception
regarding the various facets of their
personal life
- economic situation, standard of living, family and friends, work life and environment as also their
perception about the well-being of the community
. This refers to the overall social, business, and political environment such as social and help network, social inclusion, communal harmony, participation in civic and social activities, job opportunities and employment generation, government developmental project initiatives, disaster management initiatives, law and order etc.
Value systems and priorities
refer to individual rankings of the factors considered as necessary for personal happiness and for a happy society. It also includes their preferred rankings of government developmental initiatives and views regarding effectiveness and impact of such initiatives.

Discusses a micro- and quantitative study of perception and value systems Covers a broad range of socio-economic aspects
Explores links between quality of life and vulnerability, both actual and perceived

New Horizons of Environmental Law

Maritime and Transport Law Library

Responsibility Accountability Maritime Law examines the phenomenon of criminalisation which confronts the Master in their professional conduct, both in terms of Flag State and Port State rights and obligations. The fault lines of criminalisation, which go to the heart of the question, demand an understanding of how the concept of criminal justice has evolved to impose accountability on the Master, in circumstances which had not been crimes before.Since this book was first published, the maritime world has changed dramatically, requiring a new understanding of responsibility and accountability before the Master can make rational decisions to respond to the risk of criminalisation. While the basic theory of accountability for criminalisation and the sources of law provide the foundation, this second edition presents a new introduction to summarise the necessity for changes in structure in order to define the pre-existing law with which the Master must comply, acknowledging the re-emergence of risk in the Gulf in 2026, and the foreseeable emergence of risk in the Arctic as geopolitical pressures create uncertainty as to who will assert jurisdictional control in the management of merchant shipping in this region. The Sources of Law chapter has been expanded to address risk management in the context of current geopolitical turmoil, balancing company commitments with the safety of the ship and crew. New content includes detention of Masters and crew, the International Convention on Arrest of Ships, universal jurisdiction, and relevant case studies such as the M/T Heroic Idun. The book's format meets the needs of lawyers, academics and maritime professionals, with the aim of analysing the character of criminalisation to determine the features which characterise the phenomenon in Port and Flag State contexts; it interrogates the aim to define the nature of criminalisation and identifies the constituent problems in such criminal accountability. Each chapter relies heavily on case studies to illustrate how the laws which reflect national policy underpinning those priorities are applied in practice. This structure enables an understanding of the problems in the criminal process, with a view to offering options for solutions. The book is directly relevant to a broad range of parties which includes lawyers, academics, P & I clubs, seafarers, shipowners, managers and agents, and national and international seafaring unions. The current law and cases have been verified up to June 2026.
