This book provides a unique multi- and interdisciplinary approach to energy conversion technologies by shedding light on the topic from both technological and ethical perspectives. It applies these concepts to examples of engineering problems related to energy conversion – an internal combustion engine and a fuel cell – in order to give the reader a clear idea of how to implement the approaches and do the work. The first part is an introduction to thermodynamics, which is an important concept for engineers when describing and analyzing energy conversion processes in terms of their efficiency. The book goes on to discuss the concepts of exergy analysis and life cycle assessment while taking environmental aspects into account, particularly the formation of pollutants. The second part introduces the ethical terminology and describes global and environmental risks associated with energy conversion, as well as aspects of sustainability. The book is based on an introductory lecture on energy technologies for undergraduate engineering students. However, the explanation of the various concepts remains illustrative, avoiding a more complex mathematical or philosophical treatment of the subject. Therefore, this book provides a modern but timeless introduction to energy conversion technologies that is well suited for the generally interested reader.

Politikberatung in der Sozialpolitik

In this open access book, the editors bring together leading experts from around the globe to examine current trends and key developments concerning digitalization policies and mechanisms in nine federal and decentralized countries. Despite the concept of digitalization gaining momentum amid the rampant employment of technological resources to perform governmental activities in recent years, little has been said about the specific effects of digitalization in federal arrangements. Though there are challenges to advancing digitalization in federal systems, federal countries are also well-positioned to build on policy learning to leverage digital services. Contributors to this volume provide a timely and comprehensive account of the implications of and relationships between intergovernmental relations, collaborative action, the implementation of digital policies, and accountability in federal systems. These individual analyses are then contextualized comparatively to gain a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities for the digitalization of public administration in different regions worldwide.

This open access book introduces social aspects relevant to research and developments of explainable AI (XAI). The new surge of XAI responds to the societal challenge that many algorithmic approaches (such as machine learning or autonomous intelligent systems) are rapidly increasing in complexity, making justified use of their recommendations difficult for the users. A large body of approaches now exists with many ideas of how algorithms should be explainable or even be able to explain their output. However, few of them consider the users' perspective, and even less address the social aspects of using XAI. To fill the gap, the book offers a conceptualization of explainability as a social practice, a framework for contextual factors, and an operationalization of users' involvement in creating relevant explanations.For this, scholars across disciplines gathered at the Shonan meeting to account for how explanation generation can be tailored to diverse users and their heterogeneous goals when interacting with XAI. As a result, social interaction is the key to the involvement of the users. Accordingly, we define sXAI (social eXplainable AI) as systems that interact with the users in such a way that an incremental adaptation of explaining to the users is possible, along with the unfolding context of interaction, to yield a relevant explanation at the interface with both active partners—human and AI. To encourage novel interdisciplinary research, we propose to account for the following dimensions:• &nbsp; &nbsp;Patterndness: XAI should account for different contexts that yield different social roles impacting the construction of explanations. • &nbsp; &nbsp;Incrementality: XAI should build on the contribution of the involved partners who adapt to each other. • &nbsp; &nbsp;Multimodality: XAI needs to use different communication modalities (e.g., visual, verbal, and auditory).This book also addresses how to evaluate social XAI systems and what ethical aspects must be considered when employing sXAI. Together, the book pushes forward the building of a community interested in sXAI. To increase the readability across disciplines, each chapter offers a rapid access to its content.

This open access book provides an introduction to the role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays in the study of nanosystems—ranging from soft and active materials to optics and quantum condensed matter. This role is twofold: On the one hand, Artificial Intelligence finds many applications in this field and enables researchers to solve problems that were not (easily) solvable before. Very notable examples are the use of machine learning to obtain energy functionals in density functional theory or the design of novel materials. On the other hand, researchers nowadays try to make the nanosystems themselves intelligent. This idea, sometimes referred to as “intelligent matter,” can be realized in a plethora of ways including intelligent microswimmers, optical neuromorphic computing, and machine learning using quantum systems.
