This book is novel in that it provides insights into the effects of information provision on people's perceptions and behavioral changes during the pandemic, and provides empirical evidence on its mechanisms and policy implications from different perspectives. It compares the different characteristics and effectiveness of information sources from the government, the news media, professionals in the field (health care workers), non-professional ordinary people, and the close environment, including family, friends, and colleagues. The consumer externality is the key concept in the analyses, as it identifies the effects of one's own consumption on the actions of others in constrained situations such as pandemics. Data from surveys conducted in Japan, the United States, and Germany suggest some implications for policymaking during a pandemic. One is related to differences in the characteristics of information. For example, information from experts in the field is perceived differently than information from other sources. Similarly, information from authorized organizations such as government and the news media remains critical in an emergency. Another relates to behavioral changes caused by the provision of information. Clearly, the effects of information on behavior change depend on the characteristics of the activity being addressed. We examine the effects on out-of-home and in-home activities during the pandemic, both of which focus on leisure activities, and show that the effects of information on each activity are quite different. Overall, this book provides empirical evidence for the importance of information dissemination policies that work with appropriate information providers and take into account country-specific attitudes to information.

This book argues for a comprehensive reframing of Friedrich Hayek, one of the most influential economic and social thinkers of the twentieth century. Its focus is on the role of legal philosophy and legislation in understanding Hayek's views on social and economic planning, and in particular his critique of socialism.
The book examines Hayek's later works on the shortcomings of legislation as the primary political tool used by governments to coerce otherwise free economic activity. It argues that Hayek's view of social and especially legal rules equates to a reformulation of his critique of planned economies, which has so far been understood in purely economic terms. This book focuses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, using nationally representative datasets from the China Rural Household Panel Survey and China Labor-force Dynamics Survey to reveal the temporal and spatial evolution of cropland abandonment in rural China, and systematically examines the underlying drivers and governance strategies of farmers' cropland abandonment.
More specifically, this book creatively uses "People-Land-Money-Rights" as an analytical clue, and comprehensively employs modern econometric methods such as panel Tobit model, staggered DID model, and panel fixed-effect model to empirically investigate the impact of off-farm employment, land fragmentation, agricultural comparative return, and tenure insecurity on farmers' cropland abandonment. Based on these, this book also further explores the role of new agricultural business entities, farmland water conservancy projects, agricultural subsidy reform, and land tenure reform in curbing cropland abandonment. This book highlights the urgent need to address cropland abandonment and provides valuable insights into land protection in the context of food security and sustainable agriculture.
