From the national bestselling author of Banyan Moon, a captivating, evocative story of two estranged sisters on a quest to find a painting by a forgotten Vietnamese artist that holds the truth of their family’s fractured past. Aside from the fact they are sisters, Vivi and Calla Nguyễn have little in common.Vivi, the eldest, lives an orderly and predictable life. She works as an art conservator at a museum in Chicago, carefully preserving pieces of the past, all the while refusing to examine her own dark history. Calla leads a much bolder, if occasionally reckless, existence. She’s an accomplished artist with a flair for the dramatic, charming and intriguing everyone she meets. She’s also a recovering addict, constantly causing Vivi to worry.Months after the two fall out in the wake of their father’s death, Calla appears on the steps of the museum with a sketch and a letter she found in their father’s belongings. The sketch is an exact copy of Blue Mirror, a striking painting by a Vietnamese painter named K.P. Lý. In the letter, Lý writes about a mysterious lost work of art. Calla is convinced it is meant for their family, and that it was their father’s deathbed wish for her and Vivi to find it together. Intrigued yet reluctant to follow her capricious sister, Vivi must decide whether she’s willing to face or shut the door to the past. From the ghostly Wisconsin woods to a glittering estate in the French countryside to a sprawling ancestral home teetering on the edge of a ravine in Việt Nam, The Seekers of Deer Creek is a story of sisters, art, and the irresistible gravity of the past—how it endures across time and generations, always present even when buried.

Equality is a long-standing issue in law. Algorithmic systems increasingly use machine learning and thus function statistically. If they cause unequal treatment, these algorithmic discriminations pose a particular challenge for anti-discrimination law, which is often based on normative thinking. Hannes Beyerbach provides a comprehensive overview of the manifestations and complex causes of algorithmic discrimination. He shows that, even after the entry into force of key EU digital legislation, the current legal situation in European and national law does not explicitly address fundamental questions of algorithmic fairness. Hannes Beyerbach makes proposals for supplementing the current law in order to find appropriate responses to algorithmic discrimination.

In the event of non-fulfilment of contractual performance obligations, under which conditions and at what level can a creditor demand compensation from a debtor? And can alleviating the burden of proof be counted on by the creditor in such cases? David Philipp Paulus deals with these perennial bones of contention to develop a system that accommodates both the delimitations and prerequisites of the various categories of compensation in breach of contract law.

A major new political history of the French Revolution In 1786, France’s ancien régime was functioning as usual. Its alliance with the victorious American colonies had restored its diplomatic prestige, the economy seemed to be flourishing, and internal politics seemed quiet. But just a few short years later, the dynasty which had ruled France for over 800 years was swept away. What happened to cause such devastating change to the long-established political structure? John Hardman traces the political history of the French Revolution, from its origins to its aftermath. Hardman argues that the nature of ancien régime politics, the mismanagement of the fiscal crisis, and a new generation of young, overly confident politicians brought the Bourbon monarchy’s apparatus crashing down. He shows how feudalism was on its last legs in 1789, and analyses the key roles played by Louis XVI, Antoine Barnave, and Georges Danton. This is a remarkable history of one of modern Europe’s defining moments, shedding new light on the complex politics of the day.

This landmark collection provides new insights, concepts and techniques to understand and respond to tort claims based on illegal conduct. It is the first comparative study of this difficult field, which has remained contested despite numerous decisions of the highest courts in the common law world. The collection draws on scholars from common law and civilian jurisdictions spanning Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Sweden. Together they set out fact patterns, and justifications for tort liability to illustrate the coherence and unity that exists when courts address such claims. While common law legal systems have developed a specific defence of illegality for some of those fact patterns, civilian jurisdictions tend to see illegality operating, if at all, through the existing components of tort liability. The book explains how these different approaches have been reached, how they work, and what they reveal about reasoning in tort.

From the romantic streets of France to the bustling chaos of New York City, Weddings is the story of three complex, passionate women and how they choose to respond to convention, from the billion-copy bestselling author, Danielle Steel. Marie-Aurelie, cherished yet untitled, embraces a life outside conventional matrimony, igniting a legacy of profound choices for her descendants. Dominique, longing to eclipse her mother's shadow, finds herself caught up in love's hidden tangles, leading her children down diverging paths. Her eldest breaks free from an oppressive betrothal. Her son clings to stability in a turbulent marriage. Her youngest defies tradition but ultimately discovers her own version of happiness. When the past and future collide, these women must decide whether they keep to tradition or forge new paths. To marry or not, because their decisions will affect the future of all of those close to them.
