New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. The book is interesting for researchers in the field, especially for those who are concerned with the food system that has been changed dynamically in the past two decades, and it is informative, as well, for practitioners who are engaged in related business.

Clarifies the dynamism of China’s agro-food system centering on the issue of food security Integrates and advances diversified existing principles, disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies Provides materials, methods, ideas, and theories for understanding the changes in China’s agro-food sector

India Studies in Business and Economics

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of India's path toward inclusive development, focusing on the socio-economic challenges. It explores the talked about
Bharatiya
model, emphasizing equity, empowerment, and community participation in decision-making.

The book is structured in four comprehensive sections. The introductory section establishes the framework of the
Bharatiya
Model, challenging established economic paradigms and tracing economic concepts from ancient Indian literature. The second section, "Indic Market Economy," explores technological advancement, industrial growth, agricultural transformation, and digital innovation. The "Welfarism" section addresses critical social aspects including healthcare, education, poverty reduction, and women's empowerment. The final section, "Pragmatism," delves into fiscal policies, trade reforms, banking sector evolution, and taxation systems. Each chapter provides authoritative insights into India's development journey. The book presents detailed analysis of various initiatives and reforms, particularly those implemented or accelerated in the past decade, while offering historical context from 2001 onwards for comprehensive understanding. Through a blend of historical context and contemporary analysis, the book aims to illuminate India's approach to fostering growth while striving for social justice and sustainable development.
The target audience includes three key groups: researchers seeking real-world data and analytical frameworks for studying India's growth trajectory; policymakers requiring evidence-based insights for crafting effective interventions across sectors; and corporate leaders looking to understand the complexities and opportunities within the Indian market. This book is an invaluable resource for scholars examining India’s socio-economic landscape. It offers a wealth of real-world data and insights on critical topics such as green economy initiatives, fiscal policies, and tax reforms, enabling policy makers to ground their work in reliable information.

India's Economic Evolution Towards Inclusive Development

This research monograph examines agricultural e-commerce in emerging economies as a problem of market design rather than technology adoption. It asks a single question: how is digital readiness converted into trusted, formal and scalable agricultural transactions?Kazakhstan serves as the primary case, combining substantial agricultural potential, long distances between producers and consumers, uneven regional development, strong digital infrastructure and active policy interest in platform-based market access. Drawing on fieldwork in Azerbaijan and Malaysia, the book compares three contrasting routes to the same problem: infrastructure-led and private, administration-led and public, and platform-led and public. The author argues that readiness is conjunctive - the weakest layer binds - and that the constraint which recurs across all three countries is organisational: the capacity to aggregate dispersed smallholder output into commercially transactable consignments. The book closes with a sequencing framework for policy. It will interest economists of emerging markets and the digital economy, agricultural economists, and policymakers working on digital trade and rural market development.Azamat Zhanseitov
is a researcher in Economics at Turan-Astana University and at the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in Astana. His research investigates economic mechanisms for agricultural e-commerce, with particular attention to regional digital readiness, platform governance, institutional support, logistics, and farmer participation in digital marketplaces. His current research is connected with project AP26102757-KC-25, "Economic Mechanisms for Stimulating the Development of Agricultural E-Commerce in Kazakhstan," funded by the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Soccer has become "big business." The aggregated market value of the first and second division teams from the "Big 5" European Leagues (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) is nearly EUR12 billion. Using systematic and anecdotal evidence from the "Big 5" and additional evidence from other European and some of the South American Leagues (Brazil and Argentina), this book explores the development of soccer as the world's most important team sport and addresses competitive balance across the a large number of leagues. The book also provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the market for players, coaches and referees as well as the demand for soccer, both on TV, at the gate, and in the betting office. Finally, the economic implications of pertinent recent problems, such as hooliganism and racism, are addressed.

Most of the discussion about player salaries, head coach dismissals, stadium subsidies, ticket prices and TV contracts is not very well informed and is based on prejudices. Assembling and interpreting the relevant and available information from an economic viewpoint provides the reader with a fresh new perspective on those subjects. Econometric evidence is presented in the form of graphs and figures instead of regression coefficients and is supplemented by anecdotal evidence. "Economic jargon" will be limited to a minimum in order to give readers a more intuitive understanding of the material.

Conquering the Pitch

From John Maynard Keynes's foremost biographer, an illuminating look at how the economist's ethical approach can be used to address today's pressing problemsJohn Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was arguably the most important economist of the twentieth century; his ideas have fundamentally altered the way governments approach economic policy. Exploring the enduring relevance of his ideas, Robert Skidelsky emphasizes Keynes's conception of economics as a moral science. Keynes was deeply invested in the broader societal implications of economic policies, and this book highlights his belief in economics as a tool for achieving the good life.Skidelsky sheds new light on Keynes's views on capitalism, discusses his advocacy of low interest rates, and delves into his thoughts on economic instability. He also offers fresh insight into Keynes's ideas about money, his philosophical foundations, and his unique approach to uncertainty and probability. Ultimately, Skidelsky shows how Keynes's vision of an economic policy that prioritizes the common good can be adapted to help solve our current economic and political challenges.

Keynes for Our Times

An acclaimed economist's fully revised and expanded guide to how resilient thinking helps us face a world of unknownsThe world is becoming more dangerous and complex. In The Resilient Society, Markus K. Brunnermeier offers a unifying framework for meeting its demands: resilience-not the avoidance of risk, but the capacity to recover from shocks and emerge stronger. Through this single powerful lens, he illuminates challenges as varied as geopolitical rivalries in a world riddled with choke points and interdependencies, the ever-present specter of armed conflict, food insecurity across emerging and developing economies, pandemics, and increasingly severe weather. This fully revised edition of the award-winning The Resilient Society brings sharp new insight to the defining public-policy questions of our era-geoeconomics, global finance, sovereign debt, inflation, public health, climate change, and inequality. Written for business leaders, policymakers, economists, and engaged citizens alike, it shows how resilience can serve as a compass for the most urgent problems of our time.

Economic Issues and Policy 9e

Many people remain unaware of the scale and urgency of Africa’s food crisis, in part because current

policies fail to capture its full complexity. This crisis is shaped by a tangled web of natural and human-

made factors, and without a comprehensive, systems-level approach, meaningful solutions remain out

of reach. Tackling this involves concentrated policies that go beyond technical fixes—it demands

coordinated efforts that bridge sectors, disciplines, and national borders.

Using the metaphor of the Gordian Knot to underscore just how intricate and entrenched the problem

has become, this book examines environmental and climatic challenges. The first section of the book

includes chapters dealing with the natural factors for the crisis, and the second section will encompass

chapters addressing human-made factors, such as political, economic, and social drivers. Each chapter

includes targeted policy recommendations grounded in current research.

Weaving together interdisciplinary research and analysis, the book offers actionable insights and

opportunities to address the manmade and environmental problems, furthering the food crisis in Africa

today.
Judith Irene Nagasha

Socioeconomic Effects of the Food Crisis in Africa

Yale Program on Financial Stability Series

A critical examination of the Federal Reserve-told by the policymakers, economists, and observers who know it bestThe Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful institutions in the world-and one of the least understood. Drawing on twenty-one interviews with former governors, reserve bank presidents, staff economists, lawmakers, journalists, scholars, international central bankers, and investors, Fed Reckoning explores how the institution has navigated the defining upheavals of the modern era: the global financial crisis, the pandemic shock, the post-2021 inflation surge, and the banking turmoil of 2023. It traces the modern Federal Reserve from Volcker to Powell, examining its evolving approach to the dual mandate, financial stability, regulation and supervision, and communication.Just as importantly, these interviews reveal the people behind the institution: their judgments, disagreements, frustrations, and sense of mission. The result is a candid, deeply informed portrait of the Federal Reserve at a moment when its power is immense, its independence is under pressure, and its future path is far from certain-and essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how it makes and defends its decisions.

Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism

“While American conservatives and classical liberals have long been preoccupied with defending the American political system against those who wanted to transform it, their defense rested on a deep misunderstanding. The tragedy occurred when “defenders of the Constitution” entered into alliances with groups that rejected the constitution's principles, leading to the anti-democratic takeover of the Republican Party. Gus diZerega’s book is an indispensable guide to the historical origins of political polarization in the United States.”

This short, concise book offers a theoretically grounded reinterpretation of American political development, integrating political theory, political economy, and intellectual history. Drawing on James Madison and the Scottish Enlightenment, and informed by Austrian economic thought, it argues that the U.S. Constitution is best understood as a spontaneous order: an emergent framework coordinating diverse actors through procedural rules, overlapping majorities, and checks and balances rather than fixed policy outcomes.Set against this perspective, the book examines how European-derived frameworks – particularly classical liberal interpretations associated with Lord Acton – misread the American system and influenced modern conservatism. It distinguishes between constitutional conservatism rooted in rule of law and a Southern conservatism grounded in hierarchy, tracing their convergence through late twentieth-century political realignment. In extending Hayekian analysis to democratic institutions, the book contributes to debates in political economy, American political development, and complex adaptive systems. Gus diZerega
is an independent scholar of political theory whose work focuses on democracy, spontaneous order, and complex adaptive systems. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of Persuasion, Power, and Polity, an early application of Hayekian theory to democratic systems. A founder and editorial board member of Cosmos + Taxis, his research spans political theory, environmental politics, institutional analysis, and metaphysics.
