This book explores the complexity of cities as sites of warfare and investigates the ever-growing challenges for Disaster Risk Management (DRM). Through analysis of existing literature, media coverage and in-depth case studies, this title investigates the vulnerabilities of growing cities, the consequences citizens face in crises, and the effectiveness of DRM systems.
By depicting the serious global security problems that test systems of culture, governance, war and peace practices, this book encourages discussion around the present and future condition of cities. Stanis¿aw Kowalkowski is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. He is the author and co-author of 230 different scientific studies, including ‘Determinants and possibilities of counteracting the use of improvised explosive devices’; and has participated in 12 development projects, including project dedicated to ‘Improving the Safety and Protection of Soldiers on Missions Through Research and Development in Military Medical and Technical Areas’.
Marek Wrzosek is professor at War Studies University, Warsaw, Poland. His military, research and teaching career develops in the scope of military reconnaissance systems, information systems and particularly military and non-military threats assessment. He published numerous theoretical and practical works, participated in the international research projects. His most important works include 
Military threats to Poland after the Russian’s invasion of Ukraine; Future wars; Doctrines, tactics, military operations.
Danuta Kämierczak is associate professor at University of The National Education Commission, Krakow, Poland. Her scope of research includes security studies including human security, education management, disaster risk management. She participated in international projects on security and safety, and disaster risk management.

The aim is to foster a scientific discussion that supports the development of a shared future, enabling the transformation of conflict towards reconciliation, conflict transformation, and peace. Conflict transformation. The book outlines a sequential series linked to the Academic Alliance for Reconciliation, Conflict Transformation, and Peace Studies (AARMENA). This initiative offers a promising approach to transforming violent conflict and encouraging educational, social, cultural, and economic change. The Academic Alliance for Reconciliation in the Middle East and North Africa (AARMENA) has successfully published a series of books, including 'Reconciliation and Refugees', 'Reconciliation Heritage and Social Inclusion', and 'Reconciliation, Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies'. AARMENA, together with its members, aims to collaborate with centres around the globe, across different continents, on various aspects of research related to reconciliation and peace studies. Combining research in reconciliation, conflict transformation, and peace studies will help integrate these disciplines within the broader field. AARMENA is in cooperation with the International Books for Peace to distribute its books in 6 continents and 31 countries and was granted the INTERNATIONAL BOOKS FOR PEACE AWARD 2025.

Introducing new insights into the history of ceramic design and consumption, Neil Ewins departs from the focus on manufacturers and producers and presents a third perspective that puts the multifaceted lives of the merchants, importers and dealers at the centre. Challenging the notion that intermediaries involved in the Anglo-American ceramic trade from the late 18th into the 19th century were simply motivated by maximizing profits and widespread market demands, Ewin's alternative approach demonstrates the value of taking their culture, identity and conscience into account. The geographic gap between the British manufacturer and the American consumer meant that those involved in mercantile activities assumed a highly significant role. Ewins analyses a range of sources including city directories, advertisements, newspapers and family trees to identify those involved in the ceramic trade, supplemented by archival material relating to the Wainwright and Ovington families. Illustrated with examples of ceramics and engravings, chapters explore how the intermediaries commissioned and marketed ceramics for different reasons, influenced by their political, social, religious and moral views. Ewins investigates how culture and a strong sense of identity, the abolition movement, kinship and family ties, religious beliefs and community, and the interracial experience all played a part in the manufacture, distribution and consumption of ceramics in the US market. You didn't go to the seminary to become a priest, the rector had explained on their first morning. You went to learn what God was asking of you.
