Geschichte findet oft in Hotels statt. Ein bedeutsames Beispiel: das Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich am Paradeplatz. Hier wurde 1838 das Hôtel Baur, das erste Grandhotel der Stadt, eröffnet. Damals war die Schweiz noch keine Eidgenossenschaft und Europa im politischen und industriellen Umbruch.

Der Paradeplatz lag als Saumarkt vor den alten Stadtmauern. Erst später nutzte das Militär die grosse Fläche für Paraden - daher sein heutiger Name. Damals führten Gaslaternen und Kutschen zum Bahnhof. Heute stehen dort Banken und Luxusgeschäfte. Am 20. Dezember 2023 wurde das Hotel nach grossem Umbau wiedereröffnet, nun betrieben von der Hotelgruppe Mandarin Oriental - und gleich von Gault Millau zum Hotel des Jahres 2025 erkoren sowie von Michelin mit einem Stern ausgezeichnet. Die "Du" widmet diesem Stück Geschichte eine Ausgabe, zumal es gleich zwei Geschichten sind: Eine spielt in der Schweiz und eine in Asien.

Das Mandarin in Hongkong und das Oriental in Bangkok gehörten nicht immer zusammen. Hongkong wandelte sich in den 1950er-Jahren von einer britisch-kolonialen Hafenstadt zu einem bedeutenden Finanz- und Handelszentrum. 1963 entstand dort das Mandarin, das interessanterweise vom Set-Designer Don Ashton (Die Brücke am Kwai, 1957) gestaltet wurde. Doch das legendärste Hotel Asiens stand schon hundert Jahre vorher in Bangkok: das Oriental am Chao Phraya, der 'Mutter aller Wasser'. Es war über ein Jahrzehnt lang das beste Hotel der Welt. Hochadel und Hollywood trafen sich hier, auch der britische Dramatiker Somerset Maugham kehrte dort ein. Im Oriental starb er fast an Malaria und schrieb dort im Fiebertraum ein Märchen, das Teil seines Asien-Reiseberichts "The Gentleman in the Parlour" ist. Das Märchen ist Teil dieser "Du"-Ausgabe.
Erst in den 1970er-Jahren vereinten sich dann Mandarin und Oriental zu einer Hotelgruppe, die in den nächsten Jahrzehnten zu einer global bekannten Marke wachsen sollte.

Nun fand in Zürich wieder eine Vermählung zweier Häuser statt. Mandarin Oriental betreibt seit einem Jahr das ehemalige Hotel Savoy Baur en Ville, und es stellte sich schon vor dem Umbau die Frage: Wie bewahrt man Geschichte und richtet sich trotzdem an der Moderne aus? Es ist gelungen, das Alte zu bewahren und in der Gegenwart anzukommen, indem darauf geachtet wurde, charakteristische Elemente des Savoys zu erhalten: Noch immer führt die grosse Wendeltreppe vom Erdgeschoss zu den Banketträumen, der Ballsaal hat noch immer seine Marmorsäulen und ist denkmalgeschützt, das Zunftzimmer holzgetäfelt und natürlich auch noch da. Das asiatische Erbe von Mandarin Oriental schwebt trotzdem dezent durch das Haus. In der Lobby hängt ein von Interior-Designer Tristan Auer eigens für das Hotel entworfener Fächer; und es herrscht der einzigartige und zurückhaltende asiatische Service, der schon das Mandarin in Hongkong und das Oriental in Bangkok so berühmt gemacht hat.

Diese Ausgabe der "Du" wirft auch einen Blick hinter die Kulissen, auf den Umbau und die Orchestrierung des Betriebs. Doch damit nicht genug Geschichte: Nur Monate vor der Eröffnung ging der damalige Besitzer unter - die altehrwürdige Credit Suisse. Sie wurde von der UBS übernommen, die heute das Mandarin Oriental Savoy auf eigene Rechnung führt.

After a prolonged period of zero interest rate policy (ZIRP) by central banks around the world, the period from Q1 2022 to Q2 2023 has seen the largest, fastest, and most widespread increase in interest rates since the 1980s, with 1-year euro yields rising by more than 400 bp. The recent market turmoil has exposed the increased vulnerability of banks, particularly those with significant exposures to long-term, fixed income assets, fueled by shorter-term, less stable funding. This challenging interest rate environment reinforces the strategic importance of asset-liability management (ALM) for banks. Indeed, a bank's survival now depends more than ever on prudent ALM. Moral Hazard is a core concept in economics. In a nutshell, moral hazard reflects the reduced incentive to protect against risk where an entity is (or believes it will be) protected from its consequences, whether through an insurance arrangement or an implicit or explicit guarantee system. It is fundamentally driven by information asymmetry, arises in all sectors of the economy, including banking, medical insurance, financial insurance, and governmental support, undermines the stability of our economic systems and has burdened taxpayers in all developed countries, resulting in significant costs to the community. Despite the seriousness and pervasiveness of moral hazard, policymakers and scholars have failed to address this issue. This book fills this gap. It covers 200 years of moral hazard: from its origins in the 19th century to the bailouts announced in the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak. The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with the ethics and other fundamental issues connected to moral hazard. Part II provides historical and empirical evidence on moral hazard in international finance. It examines in turn the role of the export credit industry, the international lender of last resort, and the IMF. Finally, Part III examines specific sectors such as automobile, banking, and the US industry at large. Die steigenden Schwierigkeiten bei der Kreditaufnahme infolge des Basel-II-Abkommens führten jedoch zu einem Rückgang traditioneller Bankkredite und einem Aufstieg von ABS-Transaktionen.Die Arbeit legt besonderes Augenmerk auf die Analyse von ABS, wobei verschiedene Aspekte wie die Segmentierung der Transaktionen, die Entwicklung auf dem deutschen Markt und die Struktur der ABS-Transaktionen untersucht werden. Dabei werden die Vor- und Nachteile dieser Finanzierungsform kritisch betrachtet.Die Seminararbeit ist in drei Kapitel gegliedert: Das erste Kapitel definiert und erläutert die Grundkonzepte von ABS.
