Explore Lao food through 95 approachable, flavor-packed recipes from the popular food content creator behind Saeng’s Kitchen. “Saeng Douangdara brings Laos to the table with recipes that are bold, soulful, and alive with memory. This book belongs on every shelf where flavor, family, and food history matter.”—Andrew Zimmern In Lao kitchens, every dish tells a story and every bite excites. The food culture of Laos has historically been preserved through oral tradition, and in this essential guide to Lao cooking, personal chef Saeng Douangdara draws on his expertise and the food knowledge passed down from his family to share the beauty and history of Lao cuisine. Discover the rich flavors of Laos through 95 recipes for dips, small plates, rice dishes, fermented foods and salads, laab, noodles, soups and stews, not-too-sweet desserts, and modern twists on traditional recipes, including: • Thum Khao Poon (Cold Vermicelli Noodle Salad) • Som Moo (Fermented Pork Sausage) • Galabao (Pork Steamed Buns) • Khanom Mantone (Steamed Cassava Cake) • and more! The Lao Kitchen dives into the heart of Lao foodways—often overlooked but deeply rooted in Southeast Asian traditions. Through thoughtful essays and memories connected to each recipe, Saeng tells his story as a member of the Lao diaspora, exploring his roots through food. Bold, flavorful, deeply personal, and featuring gorgeous photography from Laos and Saeng’s own kitchen, The Lao Kitchen is a celebration of community, the connection that food brings, and what it means to cook from the heart.

Lao Flavors and Stories Told Through Family Recipes

The Lao Kitchen

Der spezifische Blickwinkel lautet also:

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this rowdy, frank reflection on illness, fame, sex, and everything in between, the remarkable mind behind the hit series Girls and the bestselling author of Not That Kind of Girl asks whether fulfilling her creative ambitions has been worth the pain. For the last decade, as she’s spent countless hours in doctor’s waiting rooms searching for diagnoses, treatments, and relief, being the owner and operator of Lena Dunham’s body has felt, as she puts it, “like towing a wrecked car across town at midnight.” It’s not easy dragging a wrecked car anywhere, much less to the Met Gala while sewn into a gold lamé corset. Or to the set of the hit show that you—as a twenty-five-year-old—are writing, directing, producing, and starring in. Or to the White House, the Golden Globes, or your publicist’s office to discuss the latest internet disaster. But Dunham does it—even if it means interminable hospital stays, vomiting in the bathroom when she’s meant to be meeting Oprah, or terrifying those closest to her—because she can no longer tell the difference between fighting to do what she loves and being a servant to her own ambition. All the while, she is holding out for a love that can withstand her personal and public challenges and, more than anything, yearning to feel like herself again—if only she could remember who that self was. As Dunham takes us through her journey, tracking her rise to fame—from selling the pilot of Girls to the present—in three acts, it becomes clear that the spotlight casts long shadows, distorting the relationships she once held dear and isolating everyone in its glare. When an endless supply of drugs can’t protect you from pain—and begins to control your every move—being famous doesn’t stand a chance against the darker corners of the human experience. In Famesick, Dunham asks herself what the cost of fulfilling her dreams has really been, and whether it was worth it. What she finds is deeper than physical relief, and more lasting, as she learns to live with what she can’t change and turn her regrets into wisdom that can carry her forward, as she reconnects to what, and who, she loves.

A handsome new volume devoted to the most important works by Manet, a pivotal figure in Impressionism and widely considered the first of the modern artists. With over 100 seminal paintings, this book celebrates the artist who bridged the transition from Realism to Impressionism and is seen as giving rise to Modernism. Combining painterly technique with strikingly modern images of contemporary life, much of Manet’s work documented daily life in Paris, depicting scenes ranging from the recently built boulevards with their sidewalk cafes, industrial marvels such as the railways, and pleasure grounds ranging from newly landscaped parks to horse racing. He also painted provocative scenes of the demimonde in popular bars and cabarets. Included here are popular and iconic works such as Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, with its shocking juxtaposition of a nude woman amid fully dressed men, and Olympia, Manet’s modern reworking of Titian’s Venus of Urbino that Parisian society initially rejected as scandalous. Little has been published on Manet recently, so this comprehensive survey is long overdue. His bold style, muscular brushwork, frank subject matter, and compositions that pushed boundaries and confronted societal norms continue to influence and inspire today’s young artists.

This is a richly illustrated new volume devoted to the most important works by Édouard Manet —a pivotal figure in the emergence of Impressionism and widely considered the first modern artist. With nearly one hundred seminal paintings, this publication celebrates the artist who paved the way for the Impressionist movement and the rise of modernism. Combining a radical technique with contemporary subjects, Manet’s groundbreaking works engage with modern Paris, depicting its new boulevards and fashionable parks and cafés along with a range of urban types, from ragpickers and prostitutes to barmaids and elegant Parisians. Included here are the artist’s iconic scenes of modern life such as Luncheon on the Grass, with its shocking juxtaposition of a female nude and a pair of fully dressed men, and Olympia, a modern reworking of Titian’s Renaissance masterpiece, Venus of Urbino, that scandalized Paris in the 1860s and established Manet as the leader of the avant-garde. This book also explores Manet’s artistic legacy in the work of subsequent generations of artists, from Cézanne and Picasso to contemporary artists including Nicole Eisenman.

36 ways to improve your writing Two writers show you how to turn a worthy sentence into a memorable one. Starting where The Elements of Style leaves off, Good Writing can improve your book, your essay, your memo, your blog post, speech, or script. These essential rules for persuasive language work on any type of writing, and anyone can learn them quickly. Each rule is accompanied by examples and a lively pair of essays, the first by Neal Allen, who developed the list of tips over the course of his journalism and corporate careers; the second by his wife, Anne Lamott, acclaimed author of Bird by Bird and nineteen other nonfiction works and novels. The authors don’t always agree on the specifics, but they are passionate about making better sentences. As Neal writes, “These rules economize, favor the plainspoken and the specific, keep the reader’s attention sharp, and in other ways show respect for the audience’s time and desire for novelty.” Some rules are fundamental: Use strong verbs. Remove the boring stuff. Twist clichés. Some are more subtle: Draw on all five senses. Give your sentence a finale. Along the way, Good Writing addresses practicalities such as finishing projects despite challenges, trusting editors, and knowing when to break the rules to serve your story. Whether you're a novice writer or a seasoned author, this entertaining guide will revolutionize your approach to crafting sentences.

The Che Guevara Library

Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Beloved Toni Morrison investigates Black characters in the American literary canon and the way they shaped the nation’s collective unconscious. In a dazzling series of lectures from her tenure as a professor at Princeton University, Toni Morrison interrogates America’s most famous works and authors, drawing a direct line from the Black bodies that built the nation to the Black characters that many of the country’s canonical white writers imagined in their work. Morrison sees these fictions as a form of creation and projection, arguing that they helped manufacture American racial identity—these “Africanist” presences are “the shadow that makes light possible,” as Morrison writes, and the reflections of their authors’ own deepest fears, insecurities, and longings. With profound erudition and wit, Morrison breaks wide open the American conception of race with energetic, enlivening readings of the nation’s canon, revealing that our liberation from these diminishing notions comes through language. “How,” Morrison wonders, “could one speak of profit, of economy, of labor, or progress, of suffragism, or Christianity, of the frontier, of the formation of new states, the acquisition of new lands . . . of practically anything a new nation concerns itself with—without having as a referent, at the heart of the discourse or defining its edges, the presence of Africans and/or their descendants?” To read these lectures, collected here for the first time, is to encounter Morrison, not just the writer but also the teacher, in the most penetrating and subversive way yet. With a foreword by her son Ford Morrison and an introduction by her Princeton comparative literature colleague Claudia Brodsky, Language as Liberation is a revelatory collection that promises to redefine the American canon.

Reflections on the American Canon

Language as Liberation

'He created his own universe and became its star' David Cronenberg, Guardian Andy Warhol carried a camera with him everywhere he went and, taken from ten years of extraordinary shots, his America aspires to the strange beauty and staggering contradictions of the country itself. Exploring his greatest obsessions - including image and celebrity - he photographs wrestlers and politicians, the beautiful wealthy and the disenfranchised poor, Capote with the fresh scars of a facelift and Madonna hiding beneath a brunette bob. He writes about the country he loves, wishing he had died when he was shot, commercialism, fame and beauty. An America without Warhol is almost as inconceivable as Warhol without America, and this touching, witty tribute is the great artist of the superficial at his most deeply personal.

Come and meet Shere Hite—the feminist hero whose notorious work revolutionized how we think about sex, marriage, and the female orgasm... Despite being one of the leading thinkers of the second wave feminist movement, today Shere Hite is little known, little written about, and, unsurprisingly, little read. Her groundbreaking book, The Hite Report, was the first feminist exploration of the link between sex and male power. It sold millions of copies when first published in 1976 and revolutionized the way people thought about marriage and the female orgasm. How, then, did it, and Hite, disappear from public consciousness? Using original research material and sharp cultural analysis, Rosa Campbell explores Hite’s complicated life and literary legacy. Campbell expands on Hite’s ideas about sex — namely, that sex is sexist — and tracks Hite through her fraught childhood, her struggles working in the porn industry, and her eventual cancellation by the far-right Evangelical movement. All the while, Campbell holds Hite and The Hite Report to account for their own failings and absence of intersectionality. In a post-Dobbs, post-MeToo world, this book’s examination of shifting ideological movements is essential to understanding both the current feminist movement, as well as how conservative, reactionary, counter-mobilization efforts can silence even the most successful of women. Contains 8 black and white vintage photos.

The Book That Taught the World to Orgasm and Then Disappeared

Florida Humanities Partnership Publications

Writers spanning genre and geography come together to show the strength and diversity of Florida’s literary landscape today In recent years, a rising generation of Florida writers has joined forces with established legends to create a literary renaissance. All This Beauty introduces this community, making the case that Elizabeth Bishop’s “state with the prettiest name” is also one of the best at producing and nurturing talent. This book demonstrates the depth and extent of Florida’s literary genius. Edited by Kristen Arnett and P. Scott Cunningham, this expansive anthology brings together poems, short fiction, and essays from 66 writers. Yael Valencia Aldana, Derrick Austin, Frankie de la Cretaz, Patricia Engel, Dionne Irving, Amy Suzanne Parker, Avni Vyas, and many others conjure widely varying experiences of the state, from Gulf beaches to South Florida nightlife, from muscadine grapevines to college gamedays and Major League Baseball. Together, they present a Florida that is more than the stereotypes of “weird” or “wild”—it is messier, deeper, and far more compelling. This anthology shows that between the headlines, Florida writers continue to affirm the beauty, complexity, and culture that make the state unique. In these pages, people who truly love Florida claim the privilege of defining it. All This Beauty invites readers to see Florida as its contributors do: a place of contradiction and connection, alive with imagination and possibility. Funding for this publication was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
