This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.

This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)share with one another in developing the principles of private international law.


The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards.


Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Die im 21. Jahrhundert omnipräsente Rede von einer „multipolaren“ Welt hat eine lange Vorgeschichte. Als Richard Nixon im Februar 1972 die Volksrepublik China als erster US-Präsident besuchte, titelte der Spiegel „Weltmacht China“. China saß seit 1971 im UN-Sicherheitsrat und diplomatische Beziehungen wurden auch für westliche Staaten zur neuen Normalität. Nun schien sich zu bestätigen, was in den langen 1960er-Jahren diskutiert wurde: ein Aufstieg Chinas zur „Weltmacht“ in einer anbrechenden „multipolaren“ Mächteordnung oder einem „großen Dreieck“. Der „Kalte Krieg“ galt als hochpolarisierte Phase des Ost-West-Konflikts zunehmend als abgeschlossen. Aufgeworfen war die Frage, wohin sich die verändernde Welt entwickeln werde. Der Ost-West-Konflikt schien zu bleiben, wenn auch flankiert durch neue globale Problemlagen. Doch die emphatische Betonung des „weltpolitischen“ Umbruchs durch das Hinzutreten Chinas, potenziell aber auch Japans und des geeinten Westeuropas wich bald Ernüchterung. So geriet diese erste Debatte über eine „multipolare“ Zukunft zunehmend aus dem Blick.
 
 China hatte Zeitgenossen lange als fremd, totalitär und radikal gegolten, aber auch als bedrohliche Macht mal an der Seite, mal im Rücken der Sowjetunion. Das Nebeneinander von ständig festgestelltem Unwissen über das Land hinter dem „Bambusvorhang“, die Erwartungen einer kommenden „Weltmacht“ und später eines „Zukunftsmarktes“ machten die Volksrepublik zu einer produktiven Unbekannten, lud zu weitreichenden Spekulationen und zur fundierten Beschäftigung gleichermaßen ein.
 
 Andreas Plöger beleuchtet in seiner diskurshistorischen Studie Weltordnungsdiskurse und konkret das Sprechen über „Weltpolitik“ am Beispiel Chinas, die Einführung neuer Begriffe von der „Polarität“ bis zur „Supermacht“ sowie die Wissensproduktion über die Volksrepublik in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren.
