In the wake of the global financial crisis, governments in many countries have imposed widespread cuts in public expenditure and social rights, some of which have been so dramatic that they have been described as 'austericide'. This book explores the financial crisis and the policies implemented in response to it in terms of the differences in the ways in which women and men have been affected by it, using an approach which combines feminist economics and a political economy framework. The book's aim is to question conventional economic theories in order to present more critical and realistic policy approaches. The breadth of the book's exploration of the impact of the cuts, exploring issues such as gender stereotyping and the sustainability of welfare systems, moves it beyond other analyses of gender and the crisis.

New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

The primary objective of this book is to address a formal representation of household economy in welfare economics in spatial terms. Although it has been argued since the nineteenth century that in exploring a reasonable indicator to measure the real welfare level of households, several difficulties remain to be faced in economic theory. The most relevant method in this specific topic is social welfare function. While various types of indicators were historically developed and improved as a replacement of existing economic growth indicators such as GDP and GRP using social welfare function, there still is a problem with evaluating the individual's utility as an aggregate term. As an alternative method of measuring the real welfare level of households, location theory may be a possibility for solving some potentially problematic issues. To be precise, location theory requires the inclusion of notions of transportation costs, spatially constrained internal and external economies, and other distance-related variables. From the standpoint of equality, this specific approach enables an analysis to investigate spatial differentiation. In other words, spatial differentiation of households can be interpreted as spatial consumer exclusion. Hence, the real welfare level of households can be measured by means of the accessibility of goods and services, of which there are several types, such as essential and luxury ones. As a result, spatial distribution of goods and services depending on their types can be considered a component of social welfare function. The topics addressed in the book include social welfare function in spatial terms, location theory related to firms and households, attractiveness of regions, economic and social infrastructure elements, and sustainable growth and development of regions.

This book focuses on a very important and still controversial topic in Japan, namely, whether a future exists for Japanese farmers, especially rice-producing farmers. Dealt with here is the prospect along with a personal view of the course that Japanese agriculture should follow, that is, a prescription for enriching the international competitiveness of the agricultural sector, especially rice production, in a more market-oriented economy. Toward restoration of Japanese agriculture, prescriptions are pursued from different aspects. One is the planting schedule of various farm products at the micro level such as the crop rotation system, derived from the mixed-integer dynamic programming model. Another is a macroeconomic policy to enhance the export of the restored 2 million tons of rice by the abolition of the policy of reducing rice acreage-a policy considered unreasonable by some. The path that agriculture in Japan should take has been argued by scholars and experts in related fields. However, no argument has been based on scientific and objective proof. Some applications of mixed-integer dynamic programming model are shown, which are very useful for policy makers as well as graduate students in the field of economic policy (esp. regional &amp; dynamics) and dynamic agricultural planning (esp. planting &amp; comprehensive management).

North America is increasingly an integrated economic hub, and Canada and Mexico are important to the U.S. (and vice versa) in terms of energy security, trade, cross-border production, and more. This has made regional security and stability more strategically important than the already high level it had attained through geography. In order to understand North America’s growing strategic significance, we need to take a closer look at U.S. policy within the region. In this book, Paul Ashby examines how U.S. now considers North America, defined regionally as the countries within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as a distinct and strategically important economic and security space.
